- At the traditional tractor meeting in Burkhardtsdorf for some time a major Russian radial engine of an Antonov is always there.
Which was also filmed. Since it was very cold and damp in the morning, he made some problems but then start he ran.
Typical of old radial engines is the big smoke at startup, because a larger amount of oil goes into the lower cylinder, which is then burned.
The sound was deafening as ever. -

I've rewatched this numerous times today. What a beautiful engine and it sounds amazing! There's nothing like that radial engine sound!

Yea and I love you’re videos
indeed
Good job for the drunk engineers!

And fuel consumption too
If that thing had a propeller, you'd witnessed a blue tractor flying.
I think this is the very engine the Antonov An-2 uses wich is actually called "tractor of the skies"
😂At least moving along the ground a hell of a lot quicker than a tractor generally does.

+Frietpan Yep same here, love the ancient diesels myself more though.

Nothing in the world sounds like a radial piston engine. The sound of raw power. Pure piston perfection!
A piece of art it is, just imagine the accuracy of timings in each cylinder 🔥🔥
BIG old AIRPLANE ENGINES , The older you get, the more you love.......Seeing your video, I feel amazed and thank you for sharing this video and success always "Bidone ........"....Pekalongan, Central Java, Indonesia
Radials are the coolest engines ever to be designed, built and flown. Big V-12 Allisons and Rolls Royce engines are awesome as well, but NOTHING (in my humble opinion) beats a radial. Sure wish I could afford one myself. Thanks for the video!
+Michael Shearer nothing better than RRoyce griffon or merlin(mustang p-51)
Michael Shearer the sound of power!
I’m honestly surprised it started without the propeller. The prop acts as a flywheel and helps carry momentum in between cylinders firing and keeps it moving along smoothly.
It also acts as load and resistance so it cancels out.
Yeah I felt like it needed something to work on like some load on the engine to help it run smoother, I'm sure it would have but it's still great to see in operation.
Radial engines do their best when giving the "failing hyperdrive" sound :)
Where do you think George got the SFX from?
This is a beatiful piece of history, thank you for restoring it and sharing it with us.
+legionbunny the funny is that this engine with the ANTONOV 2 is still in production
+theneptune2011 Do you know if these early Russian engines were based on a "Bristol" design. ie Jupiter,Pegasus, etc.
+theneptune2011 Do you know if these early Russian engines were based on a "Bristol" design. ie Jupiter,Pegasus, etc.
theneptune2011 doesn't mean restoring it was easy, and in my opinion, it doesn't diminish it's beauty.
+B.R. Buckeye Man of course yes....remember russian has just small quantity of own design, they just take a item(this mean a plane, car, vessel)upgrade and re-design,this and all engines are an upgrades bristol an RR engines...for example, mig 15(sabre copy)..tu154(b727 copy)...lada (fiat copy under licence)...the list is huge..all the v8 engines come from americans v8,....they are copy, but 100% better than the originals, very reliable....i remember when i fly an 2 one day we run out off fuel....and we just add 220 gallons of 90% etanol, and the god danm plane fly like nothing, when we land,90%of the engine melted and destroyed, but never turn off
Wow. Das finde ich ja toll.
Wowww Spectacular! With these, people crossed the continents and seas at high altitudes... Hats off to the engineers those days!
I have honestly never seen something so beautiful in my life....
Nachthexe DerShredder time to watch it again then!
I wasn't expecting a radial engine to sound this good! Beautiful machine 💜
That moment when it fires! It's like a monster waking up from a deep sleep! "I may have been down, but not out!"
They used to fly an AN2 over me for many years, and given a little headwinf it could be virtually standing still and climbing forever outside my house, I loved the sound it made
What a fookin champion to be the guy in some lil town has a perfectly working plane engine that sounds like hell on earth haha

There’s for something special about radials! The noise, the smoke and flames! Nothing can compare to a radial!

We ned to produce it ouerselves with seaweed and comparable tecnics (power to liquids) the we can reverse the co2 polition with over production (in that we are already very good)
Fuel it with dark rum, 90% proof - it'll run better and'll be very good for the environment and people will love the exhaust gases LOL!
What a great piece of engineering the radial engine is. Love it.
That was TOTALLY FRICKEN AWSOME
Absolutely love the sound of this engine

Superb! Wonderful post. Bring this beast to America. Great job on restoration and function. I love the sound of it starting. Powerful giant waiting to breath smoke and fire!

I don't think all humanity deserve the praise for engines. For example, I am from India and with zero ego I feel so insignificant that I come from a gene pool that is full of so called engineers who still after 100 years when white people invented ICE, haven't been able to make a working motorbike or car engine on their own from scratch. There definitely are two types of humans, one is intelligent others aren't, period.
Sumit Singh Don't be so glum. Here's a name for you, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. One of the worlds greatest physicists, who won a Nobel prize and now has a space observatory named after him. It's not genetic, just a matter of necessity, drive and resources.

Radial engines have odd number of cylinders (per section).
Such an awesome sound.
Schön am Sonntag Morgen.
Wow those cooling fins! Nice sound. Interesting comment to share: Back when it was hard to find the recommended weight for Harley motors, I went to an aviation company and bought 50W for cheaper than auto 30W. Forgot who told me to check it out. Also forgot brand. Thanks for the perfect video!
Hi Bidone, you might want to add the words "inertia starter" to the video description as well. There are not many videos about that, so with those words it might pop up as related or in search results for new viewers. Wish you the best, and thumbs up!
I suppose the original propellor blades also provide a significant flywheel effect, which could help with the rough/difficult starting... But granted this thing is impressive enough even without them.

Oh that’s why the start up sounded like that
LOL this is pretty awesome Merlin, now you have me searching out radial engine starting and running videos on UA-cam! You and Jimmy are going to be all jacked up on adrenaline playing with this engine!!! LOL
Awesome sound !
I found out that pre-warming the oil helps a radial start a whole lot easier. Yes, the 50 weight oil is about the consistency of honey but is just what that engine needs.
the noise it made when it was trying to start up is where transformers got their inspiration from
Love it, sounds fabulous

Need to fit a club propellor, will run much nicer with something to turn against and also acts like a flywheel.
That was my exact thought the second the video started. These aren't made to run without a prop. He wouldn't have as much trouble starting the engine either, with the propeller to help keep it spinning.
You are exactly right sir. I checked today at work and all the overhaul and service manuals tell you that running without a ballast or club prop is not to be done. It will result in damaging shunting of the gears as the engine loads and unloads between power pulses. The ballast or club prop keeps a drag load on the engine to prevent this. I would not want to be there when it lets go! I saw pictures of an exploded M14 that had been run without a load.
Yes,ram air cooling from prop wash. The engine temp is thermostatically controlled by opening or closing the gills.
Thinking the same thing, some engines can be damaged if run unloaded. It's too easy to over-rev them if not careful on the throttle.
pauljs75 I'd say it was over revving a bit.
Epic sound!!!
Damn I love the radial engine sound
Wow, at first I thought it will fly away to the sky. how many hp is this engine? really you are so great. I like the Russian people so much. one day I will go to visit your country.
Yeeah.. about that.. He is German and this demonstration is taking place in Germany, sooo... still wanna go?👌😁😂

It looks like an ASh-62, which has around 700hp peak output if I remember correctly. This is the same engine used in the An-2 and Li-2. Crazy machine.
@Ã г н i - A ᛔ e c τ ã I know the engine very well.

You need a dummy propellor on this to give it some flywheel mass load and make it run smoother, and also to blast air across the cylinders and cool them. The propellor is used in lieu of a flywheel on these aircraft engines... without one they aren't going to run as smooth, and they are going to heat up all the way to the point of failure if you keep running them for a long period of time, because they are air cooled.

@Quadratschädelhersteller im Urlaub Hmm, I bought my beautiful little propellor for $150 US. I think what you are talking about is a variable pitch propellor.
I like the mighty roar of the radial engine ❤
These radial engines are amazing.
The sound of true power.

Russians never fail to amaze me. I believe they can build anything even from garbage and it will kick asses. :D
Mishkin i had a 1960s 0r 70s russian army k750 sidevalve bike, it had sat outdoors for many years, but after just half a day of cleaning adjusting and swearing, it coughed and roared back into life, in a dense cloud of smoke!!!!!, very satisfying
Did ya have to put some vodka in the tank first?
I'm surprised some flag waver would say this ?
You got to give it to them, the old Lada cars are still running, very servicible, pretty bomb proof and easy maintaince,,, unlike the overpriced short shelf life electronic junk we are forced to drive today!
Actually it's a copy of Wright Cyclone that was built in USSR under license agreement in early to mid 1930s. It was used in I-15, I-16 and I-153 fighters.
Wonderful sound
2:38 My reaction ;)
Needs a propeller to impose some load on the engine.
Plus, what is cooling the cylinders?
+Robert Gift i was thinking the same thing, at that rate they gonna blow the engine because the lack of air cooling.
and then they need a BIGGER tractor to hold it lol
+Neo Here tractor cleared for take-off
Nothing is cooling them. But these engines can run quite a while without overheating. The engines are designed to be cooled by the prop and the cold air up there. Radial plane engines are also used in Tractor Pulling, also without any coolant.
+Robert Gift These engines usually take a few minutes before they even reach operational temperature, so a few seconds running for an expo won't bother it.
+Soldier they put em on choppers now also
Superb engine and video ! 👍
