An instrument that is almost entirely absent from the output of the great pre-twentieth-century composers, the guitar has long been viewed as a means to discovering new repertoire and neglected composers. One such example is Ferdinand Rebay, whose works (which have only recently come to light) present a unique case in bridging the central-European gap. This release is dedicated to his two Sonatas for Flute and Guitar.
Rebay believed that the blending of wind and guitar timbres produced a far more attractive sound than that of winds and piano, and the two sonatas - written in 1942 - date from an immensely productive period as regards the composer’s chamber duo output for guitar. Heavy in dialogue, they reveal a technique deeply rooted in Viennese tradition; from the Neoclassical style of the First, whose Scherzo exudes Beethovenian inspiration, to the stirringly Romance feel of the Second, with its broad phrasing and intensely lyrical passagework, these are two strikingly different works of character that together illuminate a fascinating area of past-century music-making.

Que c’est beau et relaxant cette musique, interprétation de ses deux musiciens espagnols MARIA JOSE BELOTTO flûte et GONZALO NOQUE guitare magnifique bravo. GONZALO NOQUE est né à Madrid en 1982 où il a commencé ses études de guitare avec PABLO DE LA CRUZ. Il a poursuivi ses études supérieures au Conservatoire Royal supérieur de musique de Madrid. Par la suite, il entre à la prestigieuse université de MOZARTEUM de Salzbourg, où il poursuit ses études sous la direction du professeur et concertiste renommé MARCO TAMAYO bravo. - FERDINAND REBAY, pianiste et professeur de piano à la Wiener Musikakademie, le compositeur viennois a composé plus d’une centaine d’œuvres de musique de chambre où le piano est remplacé par la guitare : sonates et pièces caractéristiques pour divers instruments, trios, quatuors, quintettes et même un septuor pour quintette à vent et 2 guitares. Un cas unique dans l’histoire de la musique. En examinant le Fonds REBAY à la bibliothèque nationale d’Autriche, il m’est apparu que nous avions à faire à un créateur méticuleux et de grand talent alliant l’élégance viennoise au solide métier des grands Maîtres allemands qu’il admire et dont il s’inspire largement, mais aussi à homme doté d’une personnalité public effacée. ROBERT FUSCH {1847~1927}, son professeur de compositions aura comme élèves GUSTAV MAHLER {1860~1911}, JEAN SIBELIUS {1865~1957}, RICHARD STRAUSS {1864~1949}, HUGO WOLF {1860~1903}, ERIC WOLFGANG KORNGOLD {1897~1957}, ALEXANDER ZEMLINSKY {1871~1942} et FRANZ SCHREKER {1878~1934}, et considérera FERDINAND REBAY comme un de ses élèves les plus doués. Contemporain de ARNOLD SCHÖNBERG {1874~1951}, FERDINAND REBAY n’est pas à l’aise dans l’esthétique de la seconde école de Vienne et lui préfère le langage du Romantisme tardif. Il compose pour guitare à partir de 1925 et en 1938, juste avant la seconde guerre mondiale il quitte son poste de professeur de piano à l’Académie de musique de Vienne. FERDINAND REBAY a-t-il été une victime du pouvoir nazi et de l’Anschluss où d’autre choses. Il ne retrouve pas son statut après la guerre et meurt dans un oubli relatif. Et, grâce à un heureux hasard et à quelques interprètes et éditeurs audacieux, nous redécouvrons enfin ses œuvres après un purgatoire d’un demi-siècle. Merci pour ce moment de musique post-romantique magnifique, avec ce grand compositeur FERDINAND REBAY et MARIA JOSE BELOTTO flûte, et GONZALO NOQUE guitare, qui sont exceptionnel, et que j’ai énormément aimé bravo.
