yup same here! my grandpa had a small little toaster/conventional oven and growing me and him would roast them glizzies until they had the charred marks from the rack they were on ;)

I always end up putting too much mustard on my hot dogs and throwing it away.
I'm not a hotdog expert but I don't think there is any other possible shape, they're made by filling super long tubes with a shit load of meat which naturally forms that smooth long shape and then the long tube is twisted into more appropriate smaller hotdog sized tubes. If you made it a patty the volume of the meat inside would probably break the lining its encased in and there would be no other way of separating that shape into smaller sizes.
