@metalnerd1979 I’m pretty sure this guy is defending these books to stay in SCHOOL libraries (as they of course should). But to my knowledge no-one is trying to ban any books completely, people can have them and buy them and new editions can be published. Ok, I don’t know what small extreme right wants, but now the left is talking about book banners and leaving out banners from where, from school libraries and some from public libraries.
In germany, can you have whatever books in school libraries?

@UnseelieRose Me too, people who are worried, not terrified. In -91 they became citizens of Baltic countries, and now live or have ties to US. They talk about how the left in the US wants everyone to think the same, wants to limit the freedom of speech, demands all people to use words in a way that feels denying objective reality around them. Many european countries are heading to same direction.
I’ve not heard anyone wanting to ban books completely in the US. I only know they want to remove some from school libraries, and some from public libraries
This is not a defense for the right. I live in northern-europe and just following you guys from outside. And i’m commenting on what some people think, like you did, not talking for whole populations of these countries

Librarian here. I am in charge of book displays in our Library. Starting last year, we don't do banned book week displays anymore. Despite the library having done a banned book displays for over two decades, the previous year, we were inundated with a flood of calls, posts and one lady who we almost had to call the cops on because she refused to leave after closing. The calls were all from out of state with the exception of one or two and two of those calls came in A WEEK before we even had the display up. People called to complain about books WE DIDN'T EVEN OWN. The sad thing was, outside of the people who complained, I had a ton of people come up to ask questions or discuss some of the books on the display. I had a gentlemen come up and ask if he could help protect the library in some way. People genuinely enjoyed the display. These cowards who hide in the shadow and ruin things for other people under the guise of "protecting children" are the lowest of the low.

I've not heard of any book banning in the UK. Well, not yet anyway. I'm sure my three would be complaining about it.
I was a parent volunteer for the library at primary school for a while when my eldest was around 6. I didn't pay much attention to what each child took out, as I was taking up to 90 children to the library each week. For some reason, they had a book in the infant library explaining about AIDS. One child took it out. Mum complained to the teacher (also the literacy lead), and the teacher agreed that it was quite explicit. I then looked at it. I didn't find it explicit. It just explained AIDS in a very matter of fact, age appropriate way. I don't remember it even mentioning sex! As a teen of the 80s, I remember the public health campaigns and am aware of the improvements made in treatment over the last 40 years. We can explain things which we think of as adult-only to children. We don't need to be scared.

Ultimately it’s not “about” evangelicals either. The ruling class of Americans don’t really care about them or their values either. They’ll pretend they do and force you to live by those values. But in private they never will abide by such constraints on their freedom.
What this is actually “about” is cold hard economic and legal power. And cultural change threatens the economic power balance. ANY freedom won (even “cultural freedom” like broad acceptance of “gay rights” for example) by any member of the wage earning, working class is thought of as an economic loss by the minority wealthy ruling class. So they will fight it like it’s an existential threat. Because it is. “Traditional values” of all kinds matter so much to the wealthy ruling class not because they care about the values (Christian or conservative or whatever) per se. It’s only because maintaining “traditional values” as the laws of the state allows the rich ruling class to effectively reproduce themselves and efficiently pass along all of their wealth undiminished to its own next generation.

I do understand, that the more radical your opinions are, the more you want to protect your kids from different views and opinions. Not because you care for the children, but for the fear that they become more open minded then you are.

Pretty soon we won’t have anyone teaching our children, and that will be tragic. I tip my hat to you, knowing what you have to endure just to do your job.❤Teachers are truly underpaid and under appreciated in this country.

I read Beloved for a high school class. It's a different book to read, but it's an important one. And it's certainly not porn. The "sexual" scenes in the book are horrific. They show the abuse people were forced to endure because of slavery, and the consequences that has. That's not porn.

You honestly think nothing gets past the librarians and school boards? I know for a fact that there has been stuff in school libraries that was definitely adult material. Obviously it was removed. But there aren't enough hours for employees to examine every single book.
Of course the opposite is also true. Some people find examples of things that got through all the checks by accident and then want to keep on banning other stuff they disagree with, that may actually be fine and shouldn't be banned.
It's tough to have a balanced viewpoint. Everyone likes to see things in black and white because that is easy to understand. Nobody likes to believe things are messy and more grey, that makes it difficult to understand and means that you have to spend more time trying to understand an issue.

If you think banning books at libraries are keeping your children away from pornographic materials, then I find you hilarious. Hell I found ways to get a hold of pornography when I was a kid and it was 1000 times more difficult than it is in today's instant info internet world. Teens are not getting their rocks off to library books they have more perverted content they can access for that. Stop deluding yourself that its "protecting the children" and just admit what it really is.

Trust me I know a lot of history including a ton of WWII history. I wrote report on Hitler's childhood when I was 10. What I see happening here in the US makes me truly frightened. T****'s cult of personality is so similar to Hitler's in Germany that I worry about the election. I thought I was hallucinating when Arnold Schwarzenegger made a tv spot and denounced the January 6 insurrection as our version of Krystal Nacht. Wish us luck and I hope you keep your house in order so that history doesn't repeat itself for you.
