Everyone saying "that's what public libraries are for" has lost sight of the fact that not all kids have access to them. Some kids will never see the inside of any libraries unless they develop the love for reading as children. My guess is that most of the book banners don't love books or reading.
Also these same people want to shutter public libraries. We need to take back the miles we gave these people and never give them another inch. Ever. Any time they want to complain, we'll tell them they had their chance.

If people are educated enough and socially cared for, guns are not an issue. American does not have a gun problem, it had an education and social security problem. As anyone is understanding: this is not about books. It’s about political control. I‘m from Germany. We once had a regime that burned books on public places. The books were from Thomas Mann, Erich Kästner, E. M. Remarque, Siegmund Freud, Berthold Brecht, Anna Seghers, Alfred Döblin, Elke Lasker Schüler, Kurt Tucholsky etc. Everyone of them are today a classical piece of literature. There is no greater honor for the writer of a book that someone in the government is so afraid of it that it is banned or burned.
I've not heard of any book banning in the UK. Well, not yet anyway. I'm sure my three would be complaining about it. I was a parent volunteer for the library at primary school for a while when my eldest was around 6. I didn't pay much attention to what each child took out, as I was taking up to 90 children to the library each week. For some reason, they had a book in the infant library explaining about AIDS. One child took it out. Mum complained to the teacher (also the literacy lead), and the teacher agreed that it was quite explicit. I then looked at it. I didn't find it explicit. It just explained AIDS in a very matter of fact, age appropriate way. I don't remember it even mentioning sex! As a teen of the 80s, I remember the public health campaigns and am aware of the improvements made in treatment over the last 40 years. We can explain things which we think of as adult-only to children. We don't need to be scared.
The approach that Dad has regarding what his daughter reads is exactly what my parents did with me and my siblings. We were allowed to read pretty much whatever we wanted--we just had to talk about any questions we had about what we read. Any book in the house was fair game. We weren't restricted to the kids' section of the library. I adore reading to this day and it has helped me be a more intelligent, empathetic, curious person.
It's not about the books, or some nebulous threat of "porn." It's not even about "parental rights." It's definitively not about the children. It's about Evangelicals gaining control over what people think.
Ultimately it’s not “about” evangelicals either. The ruling class of Americans don’t really care about them or their values either. They’ll pretend they do and force you to live by those values. But in private they never will abide by such constraints on their freedom. What this is actually “about” is cold hard economic and legal power. And cultural change threatens the economic power balance. ANY freedom won (even “cultural freedom” like broad acceptance of “gay rights” for example) by any member of the wage earning, working class is thought of as an economic loss by the minority wealthy ruling class. So they will fight it like it’s an existential threat. Because it is. “Traditional values” of all kinds matter so much to the wealthy ruling class not because they care about the values (Christian or conservative or whatever) per se. It’s only because maintaining “traditional values” as the laws of the state allows the rich ruling class to effectively reproduce themselves and efficiently pass along all of their wealth undiminished to its own next generation.
As a German I look at the discussion and think: wow, how do the banners not see the similarity to the banning in pre WW2 Germany. Deciding what the people should read is only the first step. What's next? Art they don't like? People who they think are worthless? I do understand, that the more radical your opinions are, the more you want to protect your kids from different views and opinions. Not because you care for the children, but for the fear that they become more open minded then you are. And that's what you call the land of the free. In Germany your freedom ends, where you suppress the freedom of another Human. I wouldn't call myself unfree. It's quite the opposite. I am free from suppression of others.
That's how it's SUPPOSED to be in America as well. Sadly, it hasn't worked out as well in practice as it did in theory. Some people get off on trampling other people's freedoms in America, especially the freedoms of women and minorities. Most of those people are powerful government officials.
I will forever be grateful for the librarian from my daughter’s high school. Whenever another book was added to the banned list, she would immediately order several copies to put on the school’s shelves. Under her tutelage, my daughter read some of the greatest books. ❤️
If these parents lived in Germany in the 1930s, they would call these books “degenerate art.” History repeats itself, unfortunately. "Wehret den Anfängen" --> Resist the beginnings.
I wonder if those banning these books even read them themselves in the first place🤔 ...also, I'm German, and trust me, you don't want people in power that ban books. (And while we're at it, general healthcare is not communism. Just sayin😅)
As somebody who lives in the UK and worked in education for over 20 years, this is truly chilling. I am reminded of Ray Bradbury's book Farenheit 451, because that is the logical conclusion of this extreme right-wing bullshit that this decent father is defending against.
You could ask ever person trying to ban these books "how many books have you read this year" and I bet the honest answer for almost all of them would be 0

In the wake of a new Presidential election … this is good to remember. I am part of the school district he mentions. We survived this ONLY by instituting a strong education of the people of the county, and a HUGE push to VOTE out the school board members that had ‘snuck’ their way in. It was a Herculean effort, but we did it. So this is both a reminder that if you aren’t paying attention and educating yourself, people like Moms for Liberty and other organizations will sneak their way in. I am so sorry to hear that teachers (and librarians) like you are under attack in this zeal to ban “objectionable” books. With all the chaos in the classrooms right now, this is the last thing you need. Teachers are all under attack - from parents, students, politicians. Pretty soon we won’t have anyone teaching our children, and that will be tragic. I tip my hat to you, knowing what you have to endure just to do your job.❤Teachers are truly underpaid and under appreciated in this country.
I read Beloved for a high school class. It's a different book to read, but it's an important one. And it's certainly not porn. The "sexual" scenes in the book are horrific. They show the abuse people were forced to endure because of slavery, and the consequences that has. That's not porn.
So that's probably why they don't want people to read them. They don't want people to think about the dark past of the nation. It's why they rail against CRT.

How else are they going to prevent kids from learning what their predatory behavior looks like? Like the politician who wants to ban being gay secretly has a Grindr account, I can only imagine what is hiding in the closets of people who want to ban anti-child trafficking books.
The argument "theres porn books in the school library" should have been a huge red flag from the start. Cause that is absolut bullshyte! No school library has pornography.
You honestly think nothing gets past the librarians and school boards? I know for a fact that there has been stuff in school libraries that was definitely adult material. Obviously it was removed. But there aren't enough hours for employees to examine every single book. Of course the opposite is also true. Some people find examples of things that got through all the checks by accident and then want to keep on banning other stuff they disagree with, that may actually be fine and shouldn't be banned. It's tough to have a balanced viewpoint. Everyone likes to see things in black and white because that is easy to understand. Nobody likes to believe things are messy and more grey, that makes it difficult to understand and means that you have to spend more time trying to understand an issue.
I've found teen pornography books after checking them out from the school library. They exist, but none of them are a good read. They fly under the radar because no one wants to read them.
Fascists never like the humanities. Litterature, sociology, non-glorified history... it all leads people to reflect on the world around them and empathize with people who are different.
If you think banning books at libraries are keeping your children away from pornographic materials, then I find you hilarious. Hell I found ways to get a hold of pornography when I was a kid and it was 1000 times more difficult than it is in today's instant info internet world. Well, it always starts with banning or burning books. Beware the beginnings. Greetings from Germany.
Never in history have the book banners been on the correct "side. " Please vote! It's the only way to fight for our freedom!
Me as a German finds it fascinating that you are banning books. Did you guys learn nothing from history?
He even mentions that we’re constantly re-learning the same lessons 😂
Unfortunately history is also a part of the ban so no one will realized that NAZI party is among us once again.
"Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it" springs to mind here....
Sadly the religeos ideals of purity try to influence govt. They are less than 40% of our country now christians, so we are winning its just slow. Sad really that ppl can think they are patriots and care about USA while being book banning nationalosts. The complete opposite of an American patriot
They don't teach history anymore. Even slavery has something the black newcomers to the America's apperentlly profited off by learning a skill like "blacksmith" ... according to modern day neo-fascists?
Everyone saying "that's what public libraries are for" has lost sight of the fact that not all kids have access to them. Some kids will never see the inside of any libraries unless they develop the love for reading as children. My guess is that most of the book banners don't love books or reading.
Furthermore, public libraries are having more and more trouble staying open. When they no longer exist in a community, where does one go?
Also these same people want to shutter public libraries. We need to take back the miles we gave these people and never give them another inch. Ever. Any time they want to complain, we'll tell them they had their chance.
They not only don't want their children being taught that bigotry is wrong, they don't want anyone else's children being taught bigotry is wrong.
That’s the irony, isn’t? If you don’t want your child to read one of these books, then monitor what they read. But you simply don’t get to say what books my child can’t read. Don’t worry; I’ll parent them myself! That’s my parental right. That way we both can practice our parental rights, and we’ll both be happy!
The sad part is no one wants to recognize that in a lot of cases especially in rural areas for minorities a lot of representation for lgbt kids is greek mythology or poetry and other forms of literature.
Those that wish to ban books are never the readers.

It’s about political control.
I‘m from Germany. We once had a regime that burned books on public places.
The books were from Thomas Mann, Erich Kästner, E. M. Remarque, Siegmund Freud, Berthold Brecht, Anna Seghers,
Alfred Döblin, Elke Lasker Schüler, Kurt Tucholsky etc.

If those kids learned that people like me exist, and had an ounce of sympathy for us, they'd never vote republican. That's why this is happening.
Do these, book-banning Americans ever think back to why their ancestors left Europe in the first place?
Yes, control. Their policy,, 'Keep the masses uneducated.'
Read. Read over a lifetime. Keep the book burners from your door.

Deciding what the people should read is only the first step. What's next? Art they don't like? People who they think are worthless?

You honestly think nothing gets past the librarians and school boards? I know for a fact that there has been stuff in school libraries that was definitely adult material. Obviously it was removed. But there aren't enough hours for employees to examine every single book.
Of course the opposite is also true. Some people find examples of things that got through all the checks by accident and then want to keep on banning other stuff they disagree with, that may actually be fine and shouldn't be banned.
