For someone who has never seen you channel, just ordered my KO, and haven't been making music for years, i think you're spot on. I was using nothing but ableton years ago and i thought this product would be a good idea to help jumpstart me back into music but considering i would just be learning "how to do the same old tricks over again" im reconsidering not only my purchase, but my approach.
    Thank you for that. Subscribed.

There are benefits to using hardware... like, playing an instrument instead of using a mouse and qwerty keyboard. But if you want to make songs, it's important to have something solid at the center of your workflow, and that solid core is usually a DAW. I personally like the Ableton style of doing things, but don't want a computer in my process, so I'm using a Force and just one hardware instrument... and it completely cured my GAS. Now when I watch videos about new synths, it gives me ideas for things to try on my current gear, but it doesn't make me want to buy anything.

I think the difference between the ep133, sp404 and all the other samplers compared to koala is just the physical feed you get and all the other things that make up the devices. Koala is great and all but for having a real physical device it’s just not it.

So heres the thing. This is an instrument and should be treated with the same expectations as one. It's like saying why buy a guitar, I can make all the guitar sounds on my DAW for free with my keyboard. Everyone would agree it's not the same thing. At the same time to make good music with anything you need talent, skill and patience. Regarding mixing and mastering, 99% percent of people will need a profesional to do this properly for them. Which obviously costs money. So even with a $1000 phone, a $2000ipad, $2500mbp a free app or a $600 DAW, music will still cost additional money on top of that to be legitemately produced. For the average consumer, all these programs, applications and instruments will be just toys anyway.

I'm baffled by TE as a company. I don't get how they exist, charging such absurd prices for their equipment; all of it is techno-minimalist stuff, reminiscent of mid-90's computer hardware, and is generally made using the same kinds of parts... They're neatly packaged and clean-looking, but that's about it. 🤷🏻🤷🏻
Their business model is just... weird. It's like their banking on yuppies contracting G.A.S. simply because they don't actually understand what a product does.

Yes, a cool hardware device can inspire you to create. However, people are great at lying to themselves about their decisions. I think it is very difficult for people to be able to differentiate between a genuine inspiration that a device *might* provide and a simple craving to buy a shiny new toy. It's usually a craving to buy a shiny new toy. GAS is real in the music and photographer community. Some people are able to honestly admit that they are suffering from GAS, but many people will rationalize their craving-driven purchases instead.

@@playpm always looked at it but too small for my sausage fingers LOL love my OP-Z since day one. So EP-133 feels like home. Lucky enough to get sick and spend a day straight with it ina bed LOL
Best I like about it no limit to 4, 8 tracks like many standalone groove boxes. It feels like Maschine + with ability to turn a pad into key mode. Not with sample per scene like VerseLab or Novation. Device feels like slim Akai Force and MPCs wrt usability.
I will certangly take it to vacation where would not bring M+ or Push3.
So far I find EP-133 properly solve tradeoff between features and limitations toward “creative limitations” and “less is more”.
I even think it will make as a “people device “

  • @PlanetZeroK
    @PlanetZeroK 10 місяців тому +5

I really like the design of the EP-133, its just a shame that the build quality is so poor. Its quite funny that TE believes they're justified in making such a fragile project because its *only* $300. That alone will likely make it a pass for me!

    • @playpm
      @playpm  10 місяців тому +5

Function wise, it's moving backwards comparing to PO33 imo.

    • @sidefish8362
      @sidefish8362 10 місяців тому +3

I wouldn't say the build quality is poor, overall it's solid, it's pretty much the same as Lego which is very tough. I think they maybe made a mistake with the design of the speaker connection between the two halves of the device and there is the well known fader issue which is in many cases probably caused by people pushing the cap down onto the slider, the hole is too small. I had to spend a good 10 minutes making it bigger with a needle file and it was still a tight squeeze to get it on. These are not build quality issues, they are production errors. The main problem I'm having is that the software is still problematic and I don't like using a device when I'm not sure if what I'm working on is going to disappear or change the next time I turn it on. It's a fun toy and it looks nice but once the novelty wears off and the buzz dies down it's weaknesses start to stand out, i'e, changes to pan, filter, envelope affect the entire layer, no individual filtering per voice. Visual feedback is seductive and flashy but also minimalist and there is no undo function, no indivudual outs etc. It's a fun device but not a do it all sampler, I don't think it's even possible to reverse samples on this and setting start and endpoints is a nightmare, I'm sending it back.

I actually agree with this one, I am a TE hater really lol, i dont want to be, i thought this ko2 looked pretty cool, but ive seen lots of problems with it, and i hate the workflow. I love my sp404mk2 and it does way more and it jives with me and I can just throw it in my backpack and go play a show without worrying that my laptop is going to crash or need an update or something like that
plus live shows on a laptop are usually pretty boring, i like setting up right in the middle of the venue and being surrounded by the sparse crowd and taking my free drink tickets and going home hahaha
the final point was, you might think that you learn stuff from a new synth or whatever
that is definitely the case, learning all the ways in my diy synth journey has made me a much better musician that i definitely wouldnt have been without building each block and learning every little part of it
I think it was worth the cost for some of it, I definitely think most of this stuff can be done with one or two synths, or as you say playpm "for free" haha

But is that how humans work?
    Is that how creatives work?
    All straight forward and logical?
Did Picasso only keep the necessary paint cans around?
I’m not defending the “buying a bunch of useless hardware” thing.
    But some guys like it.
Some guys will have an ASR10, MPC3000,A Push and whatever.
Then see a video on how a guy uses his MPC with Ableton and samples everything to his ASR . Now he’s panting again. Maybe he hates making music on computer apps.
    Maybe he’s not budget conscious.
And doesn’t like apps for creating.
All kinds of people out there.
They’re not stupid for being who they are.
I know a guy that spent his life not spending money .
He bought no gear and thought it was stupid.
    Then he went broke.
    His business went away.
Then he came to my house and saw all this classic sht.
At first he was like “why?”
    Now he’s like “wow!”
All my gear tripled/quadrupled in value from what I paid for it.
And is all over the internet. Boosting its value.
If times get funky I can sell a piece and be good. Real good!
All I’m saying is that there are different ways of looking at this thing.
Do violinists really need a Stradivarius ?
    No.
It’s just a well made violin.
But it’s full, loud, and immediate!
Play one string and it’s like WOW!
They go for 3,16, 20 million!
    Are they practical? No.
Should anybody buy one? Sure, go for it. You can always sell it later.
And you, in your lifetime, can say you owned one.
    Is that stupid?
    Not to some!
I mean, why climb a mountain?
    Fly first class.
    Buy classic Jordans?
Pay $1500 at a steak house for 4 people.
Go to Mr Chow for dinner?
    😂

a hardware workflow can totally change your creative process and enhance creativity. there is a reason why people choose to go dawless/outside of the computer. people who work with computers, for example
to "remind" people that they can just use their computer for free is not a revelation

I think what you did there is pretty unfair. Teenage engineering is a brand well known for affordable gear and they really want everyone to buy their stuff. Do not tell me that you are among those poor people that do not directly replace the toilet bowl after using it instead of merely flushing

Nothing will dissuade me from my fully kitted out hardware studio......welll ...its never 'fully' kitted out, it never will be, thats the fun for me. I have a 4k mac mini and studio monitor with an arturria keylabs mk II 88 Key controller with loads of vsts abd plugins, Komplete, the lot, but personally none of it compares to messing with my Polybrute or Iridium, patching the midi thru my mrcc router and routing it through my big sky reverb and microcosm pedals.
I spent most my life working on a PC , im in my 40s now so thats probably why i prefer twiddling the knobs more......if im feeling extra Hainbach i have tape looper and video projector from the 50's! Which create some crazy old skook scratches and visuals.
Its all just preference imo, and of course, what you can afford etc.

So basically, your argument is relevant to all hardware samplers, doesn’t it? Don’t buy a hardware, buy a software and you are gas free. I guess you have never open a new hardware box, have that blood rushing to your vains, hook it up to cables then to your monitors, press that on button, wait for a while, then press those physical buttons instead of that pc keyboard or an ipad screen. J Dilla has just rolled over in his grave. I am sorry that you paid 400.-Usd. But with 299, you can just have a nice dinner with a bottle of nice wine. It is actually a steal, give it sometime and TE will fix them and with their non stop software updates it will become a nice full blown sampler. Just be patient. People already made nice beats with K.O.II. And it is the no.1 selling sampler in the World as we speak. Kudos to those software lovers, but gas therapy jargone isn’t cut for every hardware, some of them here to stay and you know it. Cheers.

Some very interesting points. But i think there are unnecessarily negative points of views to what is a very beautiful sounding sampler (k02) ive just been learning how to use it by making a track and am immensely satisifed. Im 25 years deep in music and there is nothing at all wrong with a "toy". We all should let ourselves play. It doesnt have to be more.
Sometimes draw.. sometimes paint. Its about the flow and letting it happen.
Look at what dilla did with early mpc and SP models. I dont doubt koala and im definately going to check that out too. But im also qiite happy using an interface with no screen.

you are right with the koala sampler i made whole songs with it ...its surely the best unbeatable programmed 88MB DAW with MSDOS graphics ...even a beast yes ....but the pressure of the PO 133 / 2 hardware device isnt reachable 4 software bear like koala...it reminds me of the pressure from the Yamaha SU700.. Most musicians do not understand when producers start 2 chose the lower bit quality over an overdressed newish bitmonster what sounds like garbage can beats with a compressoin of an plastic bottle.... 4 HIP HOP /BOOMBAP /RAP Beats... such kind of these hardware samplers are the shit ...4 real...i just talk about my expierences ....Greets from Austria peace

In my view, having a hardware sampler is not a comparison with what you can or can't do in software, it's a feeling of playing on an instrument, which you lack when you're using a software.

+1 to this: 4:53 "It's just a good-looking toy, makes you feel good while pressing the buttons. If you want to make music, then you should make music... and put your time and effort on improving your skills." I love toys, but the EP-133 KO-2 seems like it's only for making quick low-effort beats, and I'd rather use something designed for actually producing complete songs.

imposing limitations can definitely enhance creativity. computer-less hardware brings new creative workflow processes. learning different new gear is inspiring and helps you to learn to work with the tools you're given. im not a proponent of this awful sampler, but to propose a computer as an alternative to an instrument is ridiculous

Cool video. I agree with a lot of what you say. To the using of the computer keyboard, i have tried countless times over the years and
use it for auditioning sounds for a few seconds but if i want to play a melody i will use my external midi keyboard.
The computer keys dont feel good to me if i play more than one note. The tactile feeling .
For the Koala i can imagine the akai mpd 218 pad controller as being the perfect partner and you can get it relatively cheap used i suppose.
Its an amazing controller if you want to play with samplers.
I understand people that want to use something like the ko 133 . It is the idea using a dedicated hardware for the tactile feeling.
Teenage engineering is a weird company that i am not supporting but i get the appeal and design.
I share your view that you can use anything to make music.
The defining instrument is ones own mindset after all
