i can see why you'd pick on their ankles, since they're so much smaller than you and thus vulnerable, but licking their faces isn't called for.
I am from germany, and in my home region threre are relicts of fortifications from bronze age to 20th century. This includes simple diiches, celtic ,oppidi', fortifications of Roman empire Limes, medieval castles, fortified towns, rennaisance and baroque fortresses, the 19th century ,Bundesfestung Ulm' and Westwall or Neckar Enz line. Some of them are stlll impressive buildings, some nearly unvisible relicts. From antic fortifications ( celtic or Roman) only ditches and ramparts survived, same thing with medieval castles, some have still small walls, some are ruins where you can still recongnize the former buildings. Some notes to american readers: Those real castles had been rather small, not these giant movie castles. Most castles had not been destroyed in war, most oft this small castles had been left by their owners , when the great time of knights was over. And the noted fortresses had been mostly enlarged, modernized medieval castles. But there are a lot of small, underrated fortifications. This had been towers, for watching a terrain, not visible from a castle or fortress, towers as outpost of a castle or fortress, there are church Towers with gun ports and sometimes there is not only an ordinary graveyard wall, but a wall with gunports and small towers. Those little fortifications could not stop large numbers of soldiers, but could protect against small patrols or gangs.

Just a note from a former employee at a historic site with blockhouses:
Haven't heard about the putting out fires easily trait, although that certainly seems reasonable and logical, but many, especially those with the bigger floor on top that matched the lower floor (unlike the differently oriented one at Mackinac there) had latches that lifted up from within their overhangs, which could also be used defensively.
I imagine that lazier folk once or twice also might've used these to huck out their chamber pot goodies.

There is one on top of a hill in Muskegon, Michigan. Me and my cousins played cowboys and Indians there every time we went to the campground right down the road.

I just like the shape of the featured blockhouse. Two square levels, one on top of the other but rotated 45 degrees. It's an elegant design for a structure.

Old video obviously. But until I saw this I didn’t realize they rebuilt the fort. I’ve been there many many times when it was just a circular earthen mound (and skull cave wasn’t fenced off). I was actually there last month and didn’t venture up to that point because I’ve seen it so many times. Wish I had now. Guess I have a reason to go back.
Blockhouses were also used extensively during the American Civil War to defend bridges and other strategic sites. In particular, the Federals used them to protect railroad bridges from Confederate cavalry raiders who, usually, did not have accompanying artillery. They were particularly common in the TN area where there were many raids by N.B. Forrest, et al. who were trying to disrupt Federal supply lines.
There is an excellent representation of a blockhouse in Stillwater, NY along the Hudson River and in Fort Anne, NY, the Glens Falls National Bank was built as a representation of the blockhouse which was Fort Anne. Like Forts, you will see them in strategic areas, overlooking water, rivers, etc.

Fun fact: before fort holmes was re-reconstructed in 2015, it was an area you'd find seasonal employees sneak off to drink and look at stars. Hell of a bike ride to get to at night.

I visited Forts York and George (both centerpieces of the War of 1812) in Canada in 2018, and they also had blockhouses. However, these differed in that they were often more permanent structures made of stone rather than wood, and also were usually only one story rather than two. In cases where there was a second story, it was usually only a platform along the walls to allow access to the firing ports.
It's nice to see videos about places in my home state even though I have never been to Mackinac Island

A historical fort you may be able to get to is Fort York in Toronto Canada. Its about the high point of the American invasion. They have several buildings including a block house you can tour in. Inside are various glass displays of uniforms, weapons, medical history and so on.
Fort Henry in Kingston is pretty legit as well.

There is the foundation of a blockhouse on Bull's Island (named after Stephan Bull). It is made out of mortar and shells.

My ancestor, Wolsey Pride, built a fort in Indiana ( northwest territory) after the Revolution. I got to see the fort’s Blockhouse before it burned down from a lightning strike. The fort repelled Hostile Indian attacks before and during the War of 1812. It was located at White Oak Springs near Pride’s Creek State Park. Woolley was a renowned Patriot, long hunter, and Indian Fighter.
Im suddenly filled with an urge to build and live in a blockhouse!!!

Watching Sal go bounding through the frame -- OMG, so cute! ... My favorite blockhouse is the Fort Pitt Block House (aka Bouquet's Redoubt), back home. It's built from stone and owned these days by the DAR (which offers it fantastic protection). There are old pictures of it back when The Point was all warehouses and trainyards, showing it in use as someone's house... Sometimes I think we are incredibly lucky that it survived at all. (And I'll shut up now so I don't go on the rant about the time Frank Lloyd Wright wanted to tear it down.)
That is so weird. I have been to Mackinac Island at least a dozen times and never even heard of Fort Holmes. I guess all of the canon fire coming from Fort Mackinac drew all of the attention. That and the mounds of fudge that send us into a diabetic coma.

Blockhouses remain in the PNW from the Indian wars of the 1850’s. They were community refuges from attack

The top floor was larger so that they could more easily shoot attackers who were up against the walls through openings in the top floor

The reinforcement of Michilimackinac was an interesting story.
In 1813, when the British lost control of Lake Erie, they effectively lost control of their supply route to the upper lakes, to the upper Mississippi system, and to the Old Northwest.
Over the winter of '13/'14, Lt. Colonel Robert McDouall took a small detachment of shipbuilders and 200 Royal Newfoundlanders and some Royal Navy men to forge a new supply route to Lake Huron, so that Michilimackinac could be reinforced and freedom of mobility maintained across the Old Northwest. They went up Yonge Street from York (modern Toronto), up Lake Simcoe to the modern site of Barrie, portaged to the Nottawasaga River, and over the course of the winter constructed 30 batteaux - small, flat-drafted boats. These were used first to ferry supplies down to the mouth of the river, where a fortified small naval base was created.
The HMS Nancy, the only British ship left on Huron; about which there are stories and songs, ferried supplies from Nottawasaga to Michilimackinac. The Royal Newfoundlanders, meanwhile, crossed the turbulent lake in their little boats to reinforce the island. They are the ones who built the fort featured in this video, and who sallied forth to defeat the Americans.

It would be tricky getting into the blockhouse if the Indians got across the wall elsewhere. You’d have the defenders trying to make it back and facing a fight at the door with the guards possibly not wanting to open it if it risked letting the enemy in
Talking about the frontier- I thought you might be mentioning the blockhouse at Ft. Hays. KS, built in 1867 during the Indian Wars.

I remember in 1999 in a roadtrip we were driving through Monument Valley, saw a sign for horse rides and the kids wanted to stop. The native man asked where we we were from and when I replied 'England ' he replied 'oh the real Americans '.
Then it suddenly hit me that we were their oppressors.
I think a lot of the so-called "forts" were nothing but block houses w/ parapet. Mind boggling the siege pontiac laid down on the fort at detroit lasted as long as it did... and in defeat.

How would a larger second level help stop fires? Seems like with heat rising it would make it easier for a first floor fire to burn the second. Anyway, interesting vid, thanks for sharing.
I think it's for pouring water on the exterior of the level below? Like I think during one big Indian siege of a garrison house/blockhouse in Maine the Indians rolled a cart full of burning stuff right into the door of the blockhouse but they extinguished it from the window above

I find it odd that you label the Siege of Constantinople as the height of offensive gunpowder artillery. The same year, 1453, the French famously and conclusively established its defensive (and anti-personnel) utility against the English at Castillon.

Blockhouses are not ''castles'' per se because they were never dwellings. While generic fortifications often are called castles, a castle is actually a fortified residence of medieval origin, or a house which looks like a medieval fortified dwelling.
