I cried when we won that 2013 prelim. All those losses to geelong were absolute agony. I hated them with a passion. Looking back now though with the success we had afterwards it's quite fun to watch. That prelim is still just about the best game of football i've ever seen. We never liked to make it easy on ourselves in prelims. 4 in a row under a kick, and the 5th against freo was looking that way until late when they just collapsed
I remember how emotional it was everywhere around me, strangers huging strangers
I remember crying with my dad and sister, my old man was hugging and jumping with a group of strangers he strained his hamstring really bad and could barely walk for the next two weeks.
Winning the prelim was definitely much more thrilling than winning the grand final

4:09 "to eclipse Hawthorn's reputation as the greatest side of the modern era". Hawthorn didn't have that reputation until after 2015. The only clubs Geelong could have taken that mantle from at the point in time would have been Brisbane, or maybe the eagles.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention Geelong's vow after the '08 GF that they would never lose to Hawthorn again.
Paul Chapmen lead that vow.

Because Jeff Kennett told people in his own party, weren't allowed to talk to the media in the last week building up to the 1999 Victorian state election. Which is ironic considering how the Kennett curse was created between Hawthorn and Geelong.

2013 Hawks turned on the 'thug' power. Lake, Hodge & Lewis started using their fists to win games.
Being a Geelong supporter in this time was a blessing from God. I'll miss it.
But I won't miss seeing Isaac Smith miss the goal after the siren in the 2016 Qualifying Final against us to end Hawthorn's chances of winning 4 premierships in a row, and then seeing Issy come to Geelong several years later to win the Norm Smith Medal in our 2022 premiership winning team.

You should do a vid about the eagles! 2016/17, looking old, didn't really want it, 2017 elim final... No one expected the eagles to even play finals in 2018 let alone win the flag,

i remember so vividly how much of a big deal that 2013 prelim was - from an all hawks big family, it was like we'd won the lottery the tears and joy after that match was insane. i remember the resentment that had built towards geelong over the years, we were so desperate.
There was no curse, he said they can’t beat us in big games not home and away. We always beat Geelong when it counts
Do one with Carlton 2022. How the Blues blew a regular season starting 8-2 then lose 10 of their next games to be eliminated from the finals
and now geelong are probably the greatest team of the 21st century. They have the best record out of all the teams since 2000, won 4 premierships, while completing a full rebuild and still staying competitive through out the 2010's. and then the icing on the cake in 2022.
Back to back in 2023 would be the crowning moment on a golden era for our football club. If a repeat of the second half of last season could occur, then maybe this is still possible.
@@darrenmiles-morland8038 yep, and by the attitude of our player after wins and losses, they believe they can win it from any spot in the eight, although you would hope they still have that drive to win every game.
I think Port Adelaide will be the test next weekend. If we win that our season is right back on track.
A back to back would do it but until then Hawthorn, Brisbane and maybe Richmond are in front.

2021 was one off season for Collingwood. It's hardly worth it.
Great vid, the emotion in that prelim was immense as a supporter who was there on the day it has honestly the best sporting moment Ive ever witnessed the roller coaster of emotions from being down and out at 3qtr time seeing a family friend storm off to the tab to collect his winnings for an "emotional security" bet on the cats to the steady comback, burgoynes goal to hit the front. But the best part and i think any hawks fan there that night can agree was when cyril made the breakaway run and kicked the goal after siren as us nor the players could hear the siren sound as everyone collective lost their shit when cyril got the footy in open space. I think nearly destroying a club is greatly exaggerated albeit very frustrating for Hawthorn supporters. Nevertheless, all remedied in the 2013 preliminary final.Then 3 flags in a row 🏆 🏆 🏆 Jeff Kennett was a highly successful president and set up the 3 in a row.
You cut out the bit where he says "when it counts". The two times it only counted were the 2008 Grand Final, and the 2013 Premlin Final... so he was right. Any Geelong supporter would take those two wins over the winning streak.

I would gladly take a premiership in 08 than any amount of H&A loses and any honest cats supporter would too. The real curse is GF performances in 89 and 08

As much I love the videos Jagger, this was a tough watch as Freo supporter. I always felt that Freo should have won that game and it could have kickstarted a great era for the club. Shame it wasn’t to be. One of the big what if? questions in the AFL. Anyways, here’s to hoping Freo can go all the way in the next few years.💜

Great vid 👍 Just on the 2013 GF - eyeball test to me says that while Freo had chances early, Hawks controlled the game particularly in the second half. Freo kicked a few late but Hawks were 5 goals up in the 4th quarter.
It was really only the 4th quarter that hawks had full control of

A team that leads wire to wire has nothing to worry about. The " best team" on the day was always going to be Hawthorn and it was a typical coaching job from Ross Lyon no killer instinct just a plan to get the ball and do nothing with it. same number of shots landed 22 each just Hawthorn had 11 to Freos 8.

Freo didn't play a strong 1st Qtr and paid the price.
The best part about the curse is that Paul Chapman started it with his speech, Geelong traded Chapman out to Essendon and Chapman until he retired never lost to Hawthorne again.

you should have mentioned that, as strong as the Hawks looked with their win streak and 19 wins in 2013, they STILL lost to the Cats twice (who also won 18 games themselves). based on this geelong were extremely stromg favourites making the comeback win in the prelim all the more improbable and legendary

Although I dislike Kennett intensely, and am glad he's gone, what he said in that interview is actually correct. He said: we beat Geelong WHEN IT MATTERS (ie. in knockout finals). They beat us in a whole bunch relatively meaningless H&A games and one non-knockout final. When we finally get to an actual knockout final (ie, when it truly matters), guess who wins? They actually haven't beaten us in a knockout final since 1963....
