  • Drilling a pivot hole in a balance staff for a platform watch movement. This is a very difficult job using a watchmaker's lathe and Micro drills used for circuit boards to drill steel. In this video I show the detailed process of drilling a hole deep enough to support a new pivot for this balance staff

    This is gold I tell ya JD, GOLD. If it triggered my 2 neurons to come up with questions, it’s got to be good: How do you know when the hole is deep enough? If drilling results in an off centre hole, would re-poising be sufficient to correct it?

    • @JDRichard
      @JDRichard  Місяць тому +2

      The hole should be at least as deep as the pivot is out. Unless the metal is too hard for drilling then you could probably have a hole that’s 1/3 of the pivot size and use Loctite to hold it in place. You’ll see my next video I was able to tap in nicely without any as the friction was perfect, and the hall was deep enough. Not question if the hole is slightly off-center, when you check up the balance staff, as it spins, and as you work, the pivot, the pivot ends up becoming centred with the rotating balance, even if the piece of metal you put in the hole is slightly offset. This is for carriage. I don’t think that the accuracy is as much of a concern as if this was for a high-end Pocket Watch or watch. So I don’t think poising will correct. Any error

      @@JDRichard Do the bits come in a standard diameter at the base, to chuck them?

    • @JDRichard
      @JDRichard  Місяць тому +1

      @@Mars-zgblbl yes there is a standard diameter and a standard thread type as well. So when you look for 8mm collets, for a WW standard Lathe, they’re pretty much all the same

    Does a comment show my preference of JD over Netflix? The jokes are better here.
    Truth is I haven't had TV for 45 years, but you'd still win 😉

      My wife and I sold our TV so I could concentrate on my studies. After I qualified we found we didn't miss TV. Our kids never had TV until they went to university. Both are medical doctors so it didn't deprive them.
