  • This is the process of graving and fitting a balance staff pivot wire into the hole made when preparing the balance for repivoting.

In the video where you called the collets 'chucks' and I corrected you, you spent the second half of the video where you were working on a different lathe calling them collets
    Make up your mind.
The proper term is collet, and a chuck in a lathe is something entirely different. Typically chucks have 3 or 4 adjustable jaws that will move over a much much larger range of distance than a collet.
Nice to see you are a humble enough man to accept correction.

I watched intently, waiting to see how you used the Loctite, thinking you won't need it with that interference fit!
In "full size" practice (I worked in a hydraulics shop running a lathe with a 24" chuck for 2 years and taking night classes), Loctite uses a slip fit, 1 to 2 thousandths of an inch clearance between inner and outer part.

@@russelldold4827 yeah I ended up not having to use the Loctite after all as the fit was perfect. As I said in the video, the main worry was to have the balance staff split when pounding the staff into the new pivot material.

The face of the punch was not tangent to the center line of the staff thus causing the 'weeble wobble' after driving it on. Even if you had it lined up fairly well before you started, as you taped on it moving the punch in closer the taper of the punch rode up on the tool rest.
It might be better if you want to use a punch to drive on the staff you might be better off to create a mount for them in the tail stock so they will automatically be in the proper position.

Using the term M3 taper is also a misnomer. Why not state M1, or M2, or give the taper rate which would be equally nonsensical?
Morse taper numbers are specific to a begining and ending diameter and the span between. Those dimensions are universes larger than the diameter of taper you're cutting in the pivot.
Sloppy terminology is a bit amateurish and possibly confusing to someone who's trying to learn if teaching is important here.
If the intension is just blathering while working then have at it.
Nice to see that you're a humble enough watchmaker to accept correction.
