    I finally got around to watching it!! I can see why so many people love this film. Really loved the focus on approaching hardships with love rather than hate in order to grow. Also the concept of someone turning into a bear is just so much fun. Enjoy :)

    An interesting fact: they did record Kenai's confession in normal, dialouge form but during the test screenings, many people in the audience (especially children) found it too sad to handle so they decided to use the song instead

      The song is always what made it sad for me. Because you can't hear what he's saying but you can see the change in characters' demeanors. Combined with the lyrics and music your mind fills in the blanks and you KNOW when the information sinks in for Koda.

    Idc what the critics say about it, this is the movie of my childhood. The ending where we saw Kenai reuniting with his brothers and Koda hugging his mom. It still makes me cry to this day. One of my favorite endings for a Disney movie. Such an underrated gem.

    • @eragon1510

      Apparently, the reason why they put the song over this was because the test audience thought this scene was too dark/intense but in my opinion, that’s kinda the point. While I think the final version still gets the point across, I agree they should have kept this in since it’s way more powerful hearing Kenai on the verge of tears and making the decision to tell Koda the truth.

    Denahi has got to be the best character of this movie.
    His entire wisdom arc about going from not blaming the bear to blaming the bear and hunting it relentlessly, only to realize what he's been doing was wrong, he's KING of dramatic entrances, and he's ALWAYS ready to throw down with a straight up brown bear, no fucks given 😂

  • @hallieraymond
    @hallieraymond 2 місяці тому +51

    One of the things I like best about this movie is that there is an origin story just as compelling as Kenai's going on right behind him. Denahi is the village elder in the opening, the man responsible for guiding and mentoring his whole tribe. Brother Bear is also the spiritual journey he takes to learn the hard-won wisdom he has as an adult.
    At the beginning of the movie, his totem is wisdom, but he's a jokester and a bit of a bully who shows absolutely no sign of embodying his totem either. Then his oldest brother is killed protecting their foolish younger brother from a bear he had chased alone. The younger brother is seemingly killed as well when Denahi refuses to help him try to take revenge. And Denahi goes a bit nuts.
    Journeying into the wilderness alone, he tracks the bear he believes killed both his brothers for days or weeks. Driven by hate, he becomes nearly a beast himself, all but rabid, only to realize he has been chasing his brother this whole time and have his own (first?) up close and personal encounter with the spirits. At his lowest moment, he witnesses the transformative power of the spirits, and they reinforce the lessons about love, balance, and respect he has forgotten. Denahi gets back a portion of what he had thought taken away, only to give it up again in a supreme act of self-sacrifice. For Koda to get Kenai back, Denahi has to lose him once again. Maybe they can still be friends, but they will never be able to communicate again.
    And suddenly, there is the new village wise man, born in rage and folly and nearly unimaginable loss and sacrifice, with a personal relationship with the spirits and a soul-deep understanding of what it means to give of yourself for the good of not just someone else, not just a community, but for the world entire. It's a much darker, lonelier story than Kenai's, but every bit as meaningful.

    So there’s a channel called Cinema Therapy where a therapist and filmmaker sit down and analyze movies together. For the episode about this movie, they actually had one of the directors on as a guest. They storyboarded multiple scenes more than once, one of them being the scene where Kenai tells Koda the truth about what happens to his mom, and they landed on the circling-around-with-music style because every way they tried with Kenai saying it outright was too harsh if I remember correctly. This was a GREAT episode of Cinema Therapy, highly recommend their channel!!

      @thecocoacouch  2 місяці тому +70

    "The story of a boy who became a man by becoming a bear" - this quote encapsulates the profound journey in Brother Bear, one of Disney's most underappreciated films. I could watch Brother Bear a million times and never grow tired of it. Brother Bear is an underrated gem, in my opinion. I believe that far too many people forgot about this movie.
    Phil Collins went absolutely hard with these soundtracks. Absolute legend. In actual life, Joaquin Phoenix, who played Kenai, lost his brother River. According to the director, Phoenix's performance during the filming of Kenai's reaction to Sitka's death was so raw and passionate that most of it had to be edited for fear of upsetting children too much.
    I can now see why the symbol of love is shaped like a bear after seeing the movie again. Of all the creatures Kenai encounters, only the bears celebrate friends and family-basically, love at its purest. It also shows that bears attacked people to protect their loved ones, just as people chased bears. As I became older, I came to understand what it meant to be a Bear of Love, which may surprise you. Bear mothers fiercely defend their babies and will do anything it takes to keep them safe. Even though the bear was merely a wild animal defending its cubs, Kenai blamed it out of grief.
    I also adore the details in this film. Denahi, believing he had lost both of his brothers, seeks vengeance by pursuing the bear (who he doesn’t know is Kenai) in order to avenge his younger brother, Kenai. This Denahi is a reincarnation of Kenai if he pursued vengeance for Sitka's death. “Koda, I did something very wrong." "Your mother's not coming." The fact that Koda puts all the pieces together without Kenai directly saying what happened is what makes this scene so heart-wrenching! I cried at this scene, but the line that ripped my heart out was, "You trusted me, believed in me, and I let you down."
    The eldest brother became a spirit. The middle brother matured into a wise person. The youngest became an animal. This film is an emotional roller coaster of intellect, wit, pure heart, and morals. It takes you on an incredible soul-searching trip.
    Brother Bear is an extraordinary exploration of identity, transformation, and redemption. It beautifully illustrates how embracing empathy and understanding can lead to profound personal growth. The narrative's strength lies in its ability to convey deep emotional truths through the lens of a seemingly simple story about a boy's journey to manhood.
    The soundtrack, composed by Phil Collins and Mark Mancina, is a highlight of the film. Songs like "On My Way" and "Look Through My Eyes" are uplifting and perfectly complement the story's themes of discovery and self-awareness. Collins' music elevates the emotional impact of key scenes, making the viewing experience even more immersive.
    Brother Bear is a heartwarming and thought-provoking film that deserves more recognition. Its powerful message about love, family, and the importance of seeing the world through others' eyes is timeless and universal. With its captivating story, beautiful animation, and unforgettable music, Brother Bear remains a cherished classic that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.

    When Kenai wakes up, (shown at 12:26 here), the color palette is much richer. Additionally, the film changes from a 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9 ; in the movie theater where I saw it, they drew curtains apart to show the wider screen. It was breathtaking, and probably influenced by the sepia-to-Technicolor moment in The Wizard of Oz.

    I remember watching this over and over as a small child after my dad's sudden passing, and crying everytime Koda was told about his mother's passing and when he got to cuddle her one last time at the end. This movie represents grief perfectly, at least from the perspective of a small child who doesn't understand that they will never get to see their parent again, not even to say goodbye.

    I live in Canada and recently had a run in with a big healthy brown bear. I went to the beach to watch the sunrise at about 5:30 in the morning, when I noticed a large creature moving in the water. He was about 30-40 feet away and honestly that's as close as you'd want to be. (As someone who is familiar with bears, I know they can clear that distance in a matter of seconds.) So as soon as my tired brain realized it was a bear, I grabbed my things and just walked in the other direction back to my car.
    I see/photograph wildlife in that area all the time so I always keep an eye out. I had been sitting in that same spot for about 30 minutes and never saw him, it was almost like he came out of nowhere. He did see me, but was more preoccupied with hunting for his breakfast in the water, just pacing. My point is, I didn't leave the beach in fear but more out of respect. People need to learn to give wildlife space. Are bears dangerous? They can be if they're provoked or on the verge of starvation but really, they're just trying to live. Poor guy was probably hunting that early to avoid humans because people walk that beach all the time. We destroy their homes and kill their food. I was honestly just so happy to see a healthy bear that size living successfully because I haven't seen one in so long.. As I get older I learn that more and more people don't know how to respect wildlife and this movie shines a light on that. If you ever see a bear, you should leave them alone and give them space simply out of respect.

    It's kinda interesting, but hate actually isn't the oppostie of love: hate comes *from* love. Hatred as a character motivation has a few flavors, but the big 3 are hatred taught to us by loved ones, hatred towards those who hurt our loved ones and hatred towards former loved ones who we feel betrayed by. Kenai is motivated by the second right up until he learns the creature he hated shared a loved one and Denahi is motived by a combination of 2 and 3 until he realizes the person he hates and loves are the same.
    The true opposite of love is apathy because it is the absence of everything that makes love possible.

    • @HybridEqualist

      @dracophoenixttv what I was trying to say was that hate happens because of love, it can be an effect of love. Kenai loves his big brother, so he hates the bear that he blames for Sitka's death. If he didn't love his brother, he wouldn't hate the bears and try getting revenge.
      You are absolutely right that hate destroyed their family and that love fixed it, but the hatred for the bears wouldn't have existed in the first place if the brothers' love wasn't there before the story happened

I could be wrong (I haven't watched the full movie in a few years), I just don't remember the bear hate existing before the movie's plot really kicks off.

  • @Ticklicous
    @Ticklicous 2 місяці тому +1

    A little neat thing to take note of from this movie, too. If you look at the eyes of Koda's mom before vs after Kenai has had time to better understand his totem and have a better perspective on bears by living as one by movie's end, you'll notice that Koda's mom has these jet black eyes that seem to almost have no emotion or feeling to them, the opposite of what Disney is known for giving it's animal characters. But when Koda's mom visits Koda in spirit, notice how her eyes changed? This was a neat change they made to show Kenai's initial perception of bears compared to how it changed throughout the course of the movie. Since he initially found them to be soulless, unfeeling monsters and later he realized he was wrong after getting to spend time with the bears at the salmon run. It is a really nice subtle nod to that whole theme of perception and how one may view something before and after changing their perception of it.
    Also, to answer your bear cub question. Since the ones in Brother Bear are mainly cave bears and modeled primarily after brown bears, it's common for brown bear cubs to spend upwards of 2-3 years with their mother before leaving and by then, the cubs typically are over half the size of their mother. So Koda definitely was far too young.

    This movie is a really common one to watch when you live up there as well. It teaches children that all life is sacred and when you take from the land you must also give back to it. You must find that balance with nature and when you take care of it , it will take care of you. But you also can't become complacent either; if you slip up and get too soft or greedy, nature will take you back, one way or another.

    The length of time bear cubs stay with their mothers depends on the species of bear:
    Black bears
    Cubs usually stay with their mothers for about 17 months to 1.5 years. Mothers may push their cubs out of the family unit when they enter estrus, or mating season, to focus on finding a mate.
    Grizzly bears
    Cubs stay with their mothers for at least two years, and typically separate at around 2.5 years old.
    Polar bears
    Cubs spend most of the winter with their mothers in a den, and then stay with them for a few days or weeks after emerging in the spring.
