    Wow, these comments are ridiculously uninformed. I guess it's best not to use it if you don't understand the how and the why since using it incorrectly can be damaging to the horse. Forcing the horse to work long and low can be extremely beneficial and can help horses who have had EPM, Kissing Spines, and a bunch of other issues.

      True it can be beneficial but so many people use it incorrectly for see the finished product of incorrect use. When i got my boy you could tell something similar had been done to him and he over bent. It took years to bring his head up into the correct position! People just automatically hate it because they don't know or haven't seen the correct way to use it.

      Horses typically get spinal issues such as kissing spine from incorrect riding too, riding a horse that has a hollow back. The pessoa can help encourage the horse to use it's back and not hollow.

    Thanks! I love how the Pessoa works, but I didn’t know exactly how to put it on. So it was really helpful, thank you!

    Can anyone explain why in this video the pulleys goes at the bit, while I've seen another video by his creator Nelson Pessoa where he fits the pulleys hung at the roller?

    Fantastic video! Thank you!

    This is incorrect!
    The pullies go on the d ring sides not on the bit as she puts it on here.
    There is actually a video of Nelson himself using it.

      There's different types of pessoa.. Ones with ropes and others more basic. My mother has one and it looks nothing like this one,it also doesn't clip under the front legs

    i don't own a pessoa, i have no intention on purchasing one to be honest. i prefer long reining/lunging with 2 lines, does the same thing as the pessoa.

    • @Kat-mu8wq
      @Kat-mu8wq 2 роки тому

      Not necessarily. The triangle line at the back quarters is missing with your long reining, that connects the rear of the horse to its back.
      I've lunged and long reined my boy and he still hollows his back, going to buy him a pessoa so I don't mess up the lines on my mother's, her horse works beautifully and he's never long reined.

    What is the point of working a horse with a lowered neck? Surely it puts it on the forehand. This is because the horse has no Collar Bone to act as a fulcrum so that the hind end can push the withers up. As a physio you should know that....its basic equine bio machanics!!

    • @jenniferhall2318
      @jenniferhall2318 7 років тому +13

      It encourages him to work over his back rather than just sucking his neck up and remaining hollow. Working long and low is extremely beneficial to the horse, building the correct back muscles and preventing issues like kissing spines. Look up Art2Ride - pretty informative stuff...

    • @Kat-mu8wq

      I was gonna say, riding a horse with a hollow back because it hasn't learnt to use it's back is one of the top causes of kissing spine. My boy is 5 and incredibly hollow in his back so I'm doing some research to ensure I buy the correct things. I obviously knew I needed a roller and a pessoa but didn't know the roller needed a ring on the girth part.

    Horses jab themselves in the mouth when they use their hocks as its all attached! This encourages the horse to "Stabilise" the bit in the mouth. This will now teach this to lean on the bit. If that's what you want then this is for you!

      No the hind leg bit is actually bungie stuff under the sheepskin.

    Love the cincept of this training TOOL not to be misused however the horse is this video has been put in the rig such that he is behind the verticle which is NOT good!!! But unfortunately working horses BTV these days is for some reason becoming normal and trendy. Yikes

      Same reason we go to the gym.. its not fun but if we want to be dancers or gymnasts, weight lifters you've gotta work hard at it

    I was off put right away with the video of the jumper horse who obviously needed some release, tie down on head and "J" in it's tail. The guy is lucky he didn't get bucked off. The horse was very forgiving even though it was obviously uncomfortable. Proper ground driving will accomplish the same thing but I'd rather have the reins in my hand so I can give the horse a release with proper timing. The whole idea of forcing a frame with a contraption like this looks awful, although I get the point of developing a strong topline and using core belly muscles, I'd just rather do that with ground driving so I can give the horse the proper release when they offer a soft feel.

      Jumping horses always carry their head high otherwise they can't see the next jump.

    This system might be okay, if the rope at the hindlegs wasn`t directly connected to the bit. This is cruelty, because with every stride they take, the strap jerks the bit.
    A horse will learn to stretch without any aids, if you just invest the time it takes. I would never lunge with a bit either.

    • @gillianferraccioli8248
      @gillianferraccioli8248 4 роки тому +1

      No! Under the sheepskin is like bungie stuff.

    • @Nightgrauen
      @Nightgrauen 4 роки тому

      @@gillianferraccioli8248 Bungie or not, it still jerks on the bit. Take a bit, lay it on your shin (has roughly the some amout of flesh as the horse's bars) attach a bungie cord and let someone else pull. And let's see how that feels.

    • @hannahm147
      @hannahm147 3 роки тому +1

      @@Nightgrauen I respect your obvious desire to make sure horses get treated well. I definitely agree that that's incredibly important. There's just one thing I want to point out about your comment about putting a bit on your shin. While you're right in that our shin has a comparable amount of flesh as a horse's bars, many people who tell others to put a bit on their shin to get a good idea of how 'cruel' bits are forget that horses still have tongues, the ability to open their mouths, and assume that people are always jerking the reigns very roughly.
      The tongue works as a slight buffer, so it'd be more like putting a knitted piece of cloth on your shins and THEN putting the bit on your shin. While still sensitive, it's already a lot less harsh.
      On top of that, a horse can open their mouth to release some pressure. Of course if a horse is made to open their mouth due to pressure it's time to question what's causing it to open it's mouth and fix it, but it's still not the same as a leg that cannot move in the way a horse's jaw can.
      I personally use a pessoa on my horse, and I can assure you that there is no 'yanking' involved. The moment she uses her hind legs properly and starts carrying her weight, the rope going from the sheepskin to the front releases pressure, and the movements get intercepted by the ring the rope runs through on the way to the bit.
      I hope I'm making any sense, since English isn't my native language and I don't really know any equestrian terms in English like I do in my native language.

    • @Kat-mu8wq
      @Kat-mu8wq 2 роки тому

      The pessoa is little to do with stretching, it's to teach the horse to use it's back which prevents problems like kissing spine.

    • @nicoleevans128
      @nicoleevans128 Рік тому

      Incorrect. The sheepskin behind the horse has a shorter rope that attaches to the top D ring along the horses back. It pulls against that first and does not connect to the mouth if he were to Blbe stretched back.
      It however can be pulled forward by the mouth but any leaning in this way immediately creates pressure. As soon as the horse feels it they release. So it is a really great tool to use on horses with a bad habit of leaning forward onto the bit.

    I don't like them!! holding a horses head in that position and not allowing it to love freely! 😕 it'l make muscles sore!!
    prefer the horse hero lunging aid personally and it's £300!! would much rather spend that amount of money for my horse to be comfy!

    • @Kat-mu8wq
      @Kat-mu8wq 2 роки тому

      That's why you only use it for a short time. 5-15 min. Over time the horses muscles will become stronger when it learns to use it's back and then the pessoa job is done and no longer needed.
      To be fair, your muscles should ache if you've done exercise correctly whether human or horse.
      Lunging with a pessoa is 2-3 times a week. plenty rest time between.
