    Really enjoyed this. I’m from northeast Arkansas, and as I get older I appreciate the “old school” ways of doing things. I used to work horses to sleds and wagons, helped my buddy Mickey work his mules. Mules are incredibly strong and smart. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos, I know it’s a lotta work.

      Yessir you’re most welcome! It is a lot of work at times to make the videos just because I have to take time to film and set things up to where we can. But I’m glad to do it just for people like yourself my friend. And I am also thankful for you guys watching and enjoying them. It makes it worth doing. Thank you kindly for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it. And I always enjoy hearing from others and their experiences. Thanks for the kind words! Take care and do come again.

    Ole gal's a diamond in the rough, and I'd be willing to bet she's pulled her fair share down the road and thru the woods, never complaining, just gettin the job done. Looks mighty dangerous for you but you have done that a time or two. Great job Mr. Odom!! Love watching your videos and I'm grateful for your hard work!

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  7 місяців тому +1

      Yessir, she’s getting old. But it’ll still haul a load as long as you’re patient. It’s been pretty dependable and easy to work on when needed. That means a lot. Yes, it is dangerous. And requires full attention to details, especially unloading. But thank you sir and thanks for stopping by. Come back anytime! Take care

    That hydraulic lift on the side of the truck is awesome, im sure it’s a common thing but it’s the first time I’ve seen it and I think it’s a great idea to have it work that way rather than needing a loader ! Sweet video

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  8 місяців тому +2

      Yessir for its time, it was a great thing…the loader actually runs off of the pto on the truck and turns winch drums on the bed and actuates the loader arms. It’s a simple and easy setup. I do however prefer to have the skid steer to load with tho lol. Thanks a bunch for the kind words and for watching. Thanks for stopping by and do come again! Take care

    Thank you for the video. Last year I got a 1982 C65 with a very nice 16 ft dump bed for farm use. The cab looks identical to yours - the same red and fiberglass hood. It had logos on both doors "Kelly Trucking, Cloudland, Georgia" The previous owner used it primarily to haul logs and pull a 20-ton trailer with a dozer. Although I don't take it on the road, I would enjoy a 2-speed axle shifting video! I am in TN and not too far from you.

    Just came across this video and am glad to see midsized old iron operating im in the process of restoring a 1968 C-50 Chevrolet grain truck it has a 292L inline six with a spicer 4spd and 2spd rear ive got the transmission and engine totally rebuilt better than new but having trouble finding a 2spd rebuild kit as this is the old vacuum system plus a really hard time finding a brake booster everything else is fine but because of the problem finding parts i may have to give up on this project which is a shame as the live PTO twin cylinder hoist and steal bed are excellent.

    New to Ya channel , i enjoyed the video , only seen pic or vids of the side loaders, here in East Texas , back when i was little , there was pulpwood, Tie Cuts, & short logs, the trucks had a boom loader up by cab /headache rack , with a rearend used as a winch , all tied in with a sprocket & chain to the PTO . a brake on the rearend to hold it still. save Ya back , looks like ya workin smarter , not harder !! i do recall some of the truck had way to trip the bolsters, to unload, maybe load to not for sure . i enjoyed it , take care , be safe & God Bless !!

    Good job bud!! I always thought I'd like to have a small log truck and haul logs.

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  8 місяців тому +1

      It’s not the most economical thing. Mainly because I can only haul 12-1500 bdft at a time on the same kinda fuel mileage a semi gets hauling 3 times what we can. So it costs more to ship out timber for now. I think the best fit for us is going to be something like an International 4900 tandem axle with a small block diesel like an L10 Cummins or DT466 tuned to around 350 hp. It’ll get around good and get good mileage hauling half again more timber than I can on this truck. But again, it serves the purpose for now anyway. It’s a good ole truck. And for its day, it was a really good truck. In today’s economy, it’s tough at 4-5 mpg. But it’s what we can afford for now and lets us pay our bills yanno. Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting my friend. Take care and do come again please!

    When I worked in the woods with this guy, back in the mid 70's, he had a single axel truck, so when we loaded it, he'd put like you have on, then he'd say it'll take a few more! Use to put the blade of the skidder under the back bunk to get him out of the woods so he wouldn't dump it! One Day he did, just broke the mirror on the drivers side, and he got a busted rib. Then we would say funny stuff so he would laugh, but it hurt and he would yell at us and tell us to quit doing that!🤣

    Just found your channel and have enjoyed your videos, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind telling me how to go about finding one of the side loader trucks or just the loader part. I have just got into milling (well I just purchased a Woodmizer) and constantly looking for logs. The problem I am running into is there's people all over willing to give me the logs but I have no way to load & hall myself. Something like this would be awesome. I have looked for pulp-wood trucks but I would still need a way to load the logs and this would be perfect. I am not too far from you, just down in Northern Georgia. Thanks again and stay safe.

      @@zachodom7486 I just bought a used International 4700 single axle, same diesel as in my 1 ton 7.3 powerstroke. Going to put a hiab on it with a grapple. I was logging today with my side loader trailer, and it would sure be nice to have hydraulic loading, I'm using the single horse and she gets the job done, small potatoes logger I guess. The job I'm on I have to park on the side of the road, and with the snowbanks my arms stick out and leave barely enough room for a car to squeak past, luckily it is a short dead end road with 1 house past where I'm working. Rather than leave the arms down I left them up and I just skidded out along the side of the road all day and then spent 45 minutes loading at the end. It just meant unhooking and hooking onto each log twice extra. Swamp still hasn't frozen up and have to cable out stuff with snatch blocks, super slow.

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  8 місяців тому +1

      This question has been asked and answered a few times here…buttt, it’s a lot more time and work dragging the log over to the other pile and work that would be done for nothing. The mill owns this trailer and it won’t move until they get back anyway. When they get back, they will grade, sort, and stack my logs I unloaded with their wheel loader in just a few min. So, there is no sense in me wasting extra time and effort to do it. And sometimes there is more than one hung up log that has to be drug off the truck and the mill knows what I have to do to get em off. So it’s no big deal. They’re closed when I unload most of the time, so they understand. Otherwise, they’d have to call someone in to unload me and that wouldn’t work for me or them. Sigh…so, hope that answers your question my friend. Thanks for watching and commenting! Please come again and take care!

    Knowing how that big red oak log would make the truck lean to the unloading side (drivers side), why didn't you load it on the passengers side so that it would come of first? The way you had to unload wastes a lot of time and scatters the load all over the yard.

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  8 місяців тому +1

      Your big logs go on the bottom…and your bigger logs go on the driver side for two reasons: 1. For road crown and 2. Because you want it to look like a set of stairs per se looking at it from the back of the truck left to right…big logs on driver side and tapering downhill to the passenger side. So when you dump…the majority of the load will come off. That big one wouldn’t have came off if it was on the right side. It would’ve just hung there and hung the rest of load with it also. Any logs of that size and swell in them is gonna hang usually. Sometimes there are multiple logs that’ll hang. But you want that taper in your load (log size wise) to help “most” of your logs come off. Trust me, I’ve done it every single way a man can do it. You want a low riding center of gravity load and also a slightly heavier drivers side load. And it doesn’t matter one bit about the load being scattered. Which it really wasn’t scattered much. They were all in a group for the most part. When the mill unloads with the wheel loaders, they’re gonna take em off and throw em in a pile also until they’re graded and sorted. Then they’ll stack em…And as far as the way I had to drag the one off…yeah it takes a little extra time, buttt it means getting the load off unassisted vs not getting it off. No one was at the mill to unload me. However, when the guys come in first thing in the morning, they’ll take the loader and clean the pile up. So it’s not a big deal at all. It works for me and also for the mill. Otherwise, I’d have to come during mill hours (which I can’t) and/or the mill would have to call someone in to unload me. So, it works out for both of us. They know me well, and know what I have to do…to make it work. I hauled two loads in early this morning before daylight and had no help. Thankfully I didn’t have to drag any off this time. Sometimes it works out that way and sometimes it don’t. Thanks for the question and for watching my friend! Do come again please..and take care

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  8 місяців тому +1

      You are right, and that’s not a bad idea; but It doesn’t hurt a thing to dump em either. You get more dirt in them when skidding than dumping. They have to be graded and the mill will take the loader and spread them out like they want them anyway on the ground. Then they’ll sort and stack them after that. Usually there’s enough rain to wash em fairly good too while they’re stacked. They’re gonna get a certain amount of dirt in them no matter what you do. And there’s not that much room for profit in this business anyway let alone trying to take a whole lot of extra time to do things such as that. Not a bad idea mind you, but it doesn’t pay too. Most commercial mills will have a debarker to get rid of the bark and mud anyway; and most will have a mud saw ahead of their band saws and/or using a circular saw as a head saw which eats thru the knottier and dirtier timber better; then running those cants thru a band resaw. Either way, getting them down…to the mill, and then off the truck, and back to the woods is the idea. You have to be careful what you spend extra time doing if you’re gonna make a living doing it. Some things pay to do, and others don’t. You just have to stay in the business a while to figure out what pays and what don’t. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. Take care and do come again.

    Too bad you couldn't find space to carry a short ramp, say 4 ft long, wide enough to run the driver's side duals up on and give you an artificial slope to get those big logs rolling using their own weight. Pull in, let the load go, then pull ahead onto the ramp and get the remainder off. Angle iron and checker plate s what I'd make the ramp out of and find somewhere under the bunks to stash it.

      I’ve got a cutoff piece of RR tie that I use when I don’t have a slight hill. But even with the block, those big ones with swell in them won’t hardly roll. There was close to 500 bdft in that one big one. It’ll weigh 6500-7000 lbs by itself. But I do like your thinking…thanks for watching!

    You don’t know which direction them logs are going to roll . It’s very dangerous

    • @zachodom7486
      @zachodom7486  4 місяці тому

      Yes it is dangerous for sure. You need have experience rolling logs and handling to do it safely. You need to sorta understand where they might go and how they’ll act. Then, make dang sure you’re out of the way. Anyway, thanks for taking time to watch and comment! Take care my friend and do come again!!

    Cool videos ! I've logged fir 40+ yrs . B careful this time of yr loading above ur headboard . Frozen logs and a lose chain is bad news for a quck stoo when not if someone pulls out n front of u . I have a 8000 Ford w a weak 240 Cummins but has a 15 overand 617 gears . Even tho it wouldn't pull a sick hoe off a oiss pot it pulls like a vig tk because of rato . Good luck .

      That’s good advice and thank you! I surely appreciate it. Luckily my mill hauls are pretty short and I don’t get too fast or close to anyone if I can help it. But yes, I will be careful for sure and thanks for looking out. I appreciate the kind words for you commenting. It’s always good to hear from others and how they do things. Especially the more experienced guys. Thanks and take care
