It's more than just an excuse. He'll be claiming that immunity for a fact now and try and make it count in all the trials that are currently ongoing. And probably he'll succeed too, in having at least some of them ground to a stand still until end of april when SCOTUS comes out and announces it is finally ready to start thinking about that question of immunity from prosecution of crimes commited while president.
It's SCOTUS, it can't be argued with without nullifying the entire judicial structure. But the individual judges can - and should, in fact - be held responsible for damaging the Supreme Court's credibility and overall respectability.

I also think rather than prison he should just be confined to the meager existence of a struggling worker in the rural US.
