Great Video! Just would like to add, that hot coffee doesnt go through fast oxidation since only the top of the liquid will oxidize according to the oxidation rate of only certain components within the liquid. Second when moving your hot coffee back and forth your not really introducing oxygen into the liquid since it to hot to hold dissolved oxygen. To give you a number water at 30 degrees Celsius can only hold about 5ppm of dissolved oxygen while water at 0 Celsius can hold 19 ppm of dissolved oxygen. What many call oxidation is simply the cooling down of the liquids temperature therefore changing the perception of your tongue not the chemical compounds in your coffee. Cheers!

And that's a good thing how? Being pretentious is an attitude. Doesn't matter how weird your glassware is, it won't make you become pretentious. That comes from inside.
The fact that he's concerned about it more shows he's been brought to the point of worrying about looks and such shallow things, rather than being true to his taste.

These days, I always feel a touch pretentious. So I wouldn’t mind the decanter either, I wish it was wide enough to swirl and could be used for wine or perhaps water. I like the design of the glass but not functionality. Hence, my main reason for not backing them but if I tried/felt them in my hand, I have no doubt my mind could be changed. Interesting video. Hope you have a great day too, cheers!

    James,
I avoided watching this review for some time as I didn’t think it would be as informative as your other videos. I did think this product was probably rather pretentious, although I did not think you were pretentious for reviewing it.
Having watched the video, I am somewhat surprised to say you have opened my mind to this glassware. I enjoyed your explanation of its function and your differing perceptions of taste for the same coffee between the two glasses. Well done.

Want to give you some feedback regarding audio levels: the transition from the intro audio to your voice. There is a drastic drop during that transition. Thinking that it is too loud I decrease the volume during the intro, but when you show up the volume is too low. So I increase the volume. I’d like to recommend stabilizing audio levels between the two. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

I really like the idea that manufacturers are exploring this space. My initial feeling on them is exactly what you mentioned with the Zalto glassware...a nightmare to use/clean without breaking. I think that given the option I would probably choose one of the other options for "experiential glassware" like those from Wendelboe or Espro for that reason alone.

I guess you could simulate the taste difference with some wine glasses. If you find a difference between a tall and narrow vs a wide one - then you'll be able to taste the difference with these. I just tried it and coffee tasted exactly the same to me 🤷‍♂️️

  • @Frustratedfool

I think a similar thing happens with tea and porcelain cups. It’s not the porcelain but the thinness of the wall of the vessel when you sip. This introduces a different airflow and changes the experience, compared to a much thicker walled mug.

I had just brewed some coffee per your French Press technique as this video went live, so it was a fun test to try and test alongside you. Using a wide brim 250ml glass from Duralex, I could definitely relate to that sense of 'juiciness' the coffee had, and it'd be fun to see how drinking the same coffee from a narrower style glass changes the experience.
That being said, I'd probably only be interested in the carafe, purely for presentation purposes. The glasses are a bit janky to me.

  • @GrumpyGrunt
    @GrumpyGrunt 5 років тому +1

The one with the larger opening also engages your nose/sense of smell more than the other, too. That alone will drastically change how the coffee tastes. The smaller opening holds your nose out away from it (it touches the tip of your nose, as I went back and watched each again). I have always liked the smell of coffee even more than the taste, so I've always kept a large cup to drink it from and find I don't order coffee out where the cups are smaller diameter.
Of course a Brit is going to pick a clip from one of the recent Star Trek movies with Simon Pegg. #TeleportToTheWinchester 😆

James, after watching this I went back and watched your review of the screens. I bought them when they first came out and had the same issues with waste and too much time to get such a narrow window of particles (400-800 for instance). Recently I started using them again, but instead of trying to get “same size” particles, I just use the screens to get rid of the outliers. For instance I use the 300 & 1600 screens (they released a few larger screens, not sure if you have those or not). I only lose a few grams, but the coffee seems so much more balanced and round. Curious about your thoughts on this.

I'd agree that double wall glass keeps coffee too hot. But then I started cooling the coffee in the karaffe with it sitting in a bowl of cold water while I clean up. You pull it at the ideal temp and then use a double wall. That's when they work well!

Sounds like extra steps for something that should happen naturally, coffee cools.
Also I'd be afraid of stressing the glass, mixing hot and cold can cause glass or ceramic to explode.

I love how tastefully you get people to engage with the comment section at the end of your videos. "dOn'T fOrGeT tO lIkE cOmMeNt AnD sUbScRiBe!!!11!11!" has gotten so, so old on UA-cam. You do it so, so, so much better. Everything about you, your channel, your content is just delightful. I don't know what made UA-cam pop your video into my recommendations, but man I'm glad they did. I don't even drink coffee (but I soon will, in no small part thanks to your channel - whoda thunk there existed such a thing as coffee that didn't demand piles of sugar & milk to mask the overwhelming deluge of sourness & bitterness that overwhelmed all else the cup might contain)

Damn, was that Simon Pegg on that Star Trek clip? I have some Star Trek to watch now. What a great actor.
I used to drink from big mugs, so I definitely find the wide rim familiar. I also use sugar, cream and milk so obviously I like a big mouthfeel and want to have it spread around to get the full range of tastes. These are very elegant, even if a little funny. Choosing the right beer glass for the right beer is also a thing for the same reasons so why not.

I don't unerstand the point of the narrower one nor do I find it particularly pleasant to look at. The wider one looks amazing and I could see myself using it but I would much rather get a set of two of the wider ones. Sure the price is probably steeper than any other coffee drinking vessel but it's unlike any mug or glassware I've ever seen...

The sniffing part might be more of a booze thing, like wine and whiskey tasting. Glass cups for both have wide bottom with narrow top. Might have something to do with how aromatic they are. Not saying that coffee isn't aromatic, but as booze has, well, booze (ethanol), it dissolves much more organic material even at room temperature so a glass with certain sniffing bias would have much more effect on those drinks.

Wouldn't it be better to have a uninsulated carafe and an insulated mug? That way you can wait for the coffee to get to the right temp then pour it into something that will keep it that way.
Also factor in the rate of oxidation with temperature, won't an insulated coffee carafe make it stale real quick?

I wonder if that kind of experience could be the same as drinking espresso on either long and narrow cups or in wider and shorter ones. Nespresso did tried to sell this kind of idea with specific cups to taste coffee...In my opinion it maybe something people already do, but in a subconscious way.

I have not bought them but I did try experimenting with my Japanese pottery cups (1 was shaped like a sphere with a small mouth and the other like an upside-down triangle with a big mouth) that I already have on hand when I 1st saw Kruve promoting the cups a while back and I have to say I prefer drinking out of the cup with the wider surface, maybe cause the other cup had the aroma all concentrated to 1 point and it felt a little overpowering.

The carafe is pretty, but with the cups, especially the one with the wider mouth, I'd be worried about top-heaviness combined with a narrow base greatly increasing your odds of knocking one over. Combined with the fact that they're glass and you've got a recipe for morning anxiety that I don't really need in my life, especially not at the cost of looking pretentious.

The coffee cup affects my whole experience with the pleasure of drinking coffee. I prefer dbl-walled glass. Least amount of toxin exposure, I’m hoping, especially when you heat something up very hot. All that to say, I would probably prefer the wider mouth. But I am having a problem with my dbl-walled glasses and I baby them. I hand wash. Still, they eventually get condensation build up inside, and it looks..icky. Any way to avoid this, or what’s causing it? I am drinking out of Imperial dbl-walled as we speak.

I am searching for videos about how glassware impacts drinking coffee but this is the only one I can find. I know for other drinks like wine and beer special there are special glasses that will make the drink drink more pleasantly.
Does it really matter to drink out of a glass or mug and does the thickness of the glass matter?
I am not looking to buy these Star Trek-like looking glasses, just nice glasses or mugs for everyday coffee drinking.

A bit pricey I'd say, and too odd looking for me. Interesting how the shape does affect the taste / perception. Good to know to apply to my existing cups. I'm also not a fan of double-walled cups because I like trying the espresso as it cools more, I think if you pull the shot right it actually tastes better cool (it's a myth that an espresso shot will go bad or it tastes worse when cold, you just taste it better when it's not burning hot!).
I do find double-walled espresso glass useful for when I'm pulling two shots to compare, the first one will go into a double-wall espresso glass and the 2nd will be in a regular ceramic espresso cup, that way the temperature will be similar when I try them.

Yes but now i am curious about which Kenyan coffee you brewed on it :p
However i have the same feeling about the carafe. Is so sooo nice; usually i prefer to drink from ceramic but i am testing day by day drinking the same coffee from the two different glasses; sometimes i can feel a difference in taste into my mouth (not every time). And yes I feel strange too to continuosly sniffing coffee 😂 definitely better to drink and enjoy the moment😂
However i think it's a new market option for people interested into those kind of things, so from this point of view I think is good. More choices!

Very cool! Kind of the same thing with whiskey glasses and wine glasses. Would be curious to try coffee in a whiskey tasting glass like a glencarin. Maybe that could be a video!

If the double wall is there for better heat retention, wouldn't it be possible to make a ceramic version of the inner wall with the same tasting-enhancing qualities? Personally, I like the design, but not sure about changing to glass.

I like the idea of these more than I actually like them. Agreed the carafe is the best of the lot. Also, I had to rewind. My brain argued that the carafe was empty before you poured it. It was kind of right lol

I would have liked a comparison with other glassware. The video doesn't show whether they are better than other mugs.

For those wine lovers, inspire is like a Riesling glass and excite is like a burgundy glass

Hi James , first thing I’ve being seeing : they are different shape for what ? ... maybe one glass can by put on another one ? Can you put big one on small one ? Or reverse and put on small one ??? To make ‘oeuvre d’art’ 😂 and store and avoid dust 😋
