as i sat viewing this video, i was suddenly brought to tears, not tears of sadness but JOY. i am so blessed to be an artist and i enjoy seeing the works of other artists as well. the Lord has blessed us, artists with 'creative' abilities. Excellent work!
+catherine stephenson Thank you kindly. I really worked to tie the music to the video. It helped to have great music that I could edit to, and listen to, hundreds of times. It stayed fresh, no matter how many times I went back to it during the edit.
WOW, I didn't expect anything that would particularly appeal to me, but that was stunning. The moment when I realised that she was creating the whole tree raised the hairs on my neck! Beautiful work, thank you for filming & sharing this :-)
I'm not an artist myself in the conventional sense. But I know something if beauty and high art when I see it. Art is in the craft, in simplicity, in the imagination. The art is as much a price of the artist as his/her hands and the mind that gave it existence. I believe to understand someone look at their art, or play chess with them. Again reading my own comments and watching your video gave me the same rush of joy and inspiration. THANK YOU!
very organic, from design to implementation of color...reminds me of the walks in the forest when i was young i could hear the trees then, at some point i guess i stopped listening.its nice to be reminded.
I am delighted that you enjoyed the film, and even more delighted that you will show it to your students. Thanks for letting me know. It makes me happy to know this. If they comment on the film, and enjoy it, I would love to hear about it. sincerely, Rolf
Thanks for your words, very glad you enjoyed my work. With this video, especially, I matched the movements down to the 1/10 of a second with the music. The music was great to begin with, and made me want to carefully choose which images to use and tightly edit them. And yes, I have more videos. I specialize in creating videos for artisans. It is my business.
Hello Ms Blu Spot, Thanks very glad that you liked the pacing of the film. I worked hard on that detail, trying to get the movements to match the music perfectly, or nearly as perfectly as possible. Sgraffitto is the name of the technique that they are using. It entails painting iron oxide onto the clay and then scrapping it away.
How beautiful!! I am just starting Ceramics 1, and your video is so inspiring; a fabulous example of what a versatile medium clay is! Loved watching the process!
+Eliza Graves Thank you. It was enormously fun to create this video for Natalie Blake. When something is fun, it is easier to capture how graceful it is.
Wow the creation and the Music so lovely. Is the piece fired at all. And do you have more videos like this? It is breath taking especially to that music. I could just go on watching for hours.
@k8jcr Well, when they paint the clay surface with iron oxide, it creates a surface that has a high contrast when it is carved. Without the iron oxide their carved lines would not be so distinct. Also, the iron oxide interacts with the glazes that they use.
@PommeFrite Yes, PommeFrite, you are correct more time on the finished tiles would be better.Maybe sometime I will be able to travel and get some more footage from the hospital where they were installed, and re-edit the piece.
I enjoy doing sgraffito very much. It's my favorite pottery technique. That's a LOT of work! How do you keep all the tiles uniformly moist while you work? You're either working so fast the tiles don't have a chance to start drying out, you're in a super humid area, or you've found a magic way to keep them all at the optimum leather hard stage while you work! When I am working on a big area I have to spritz pieces with a water mister continually!
Hello Zira, I am the videographer, and not a ceramist, but, they do indeed use glazes in a second firing after they have done the first firing with the iron oxide on.
The music, the pace, the piece ----- bella molti bella. Do you mind sharing with me was this all unfired paint or resist or did you fire after you painted with what underglaze ????? I am just beginning so I only know a few things. Such a delicate but breath taking piece. Thanks for sharing a little of you with us the world. It made me peaceful. Did you send some of this to the White House and to the Middle East ????? (smiles)
Hi! Wonderful! Did u use any glaze on top of the iron oxide? Or did you use any other oxides like tin or cobalt. I love the color variety and have started using this technique on mugs but and no idea how to fire them.
The artisans press the clay tiles onto plaster forms to create the curves in the clay. Later, after painting them with iron oxide, they carve the designs and details.
What objects are used to create the relief design? Is it clay? Are they removed? I'd like to try something like this myself, if on a smaller scale......
so you use a wash? or a slip? and let it dry somewhat, to before leather hard and then carve? sorry to repeat, but i have seen some sgraffito that you paint on slip bisque and then carve, but it appears you use the clay still wet ish. thanks great work.
it looks to me as though the clay was leather hard, then they sgraffito carved the red clay slip off. And then they fired it and then they glazed it and then they fired it again.
as i sat viewing this video, i was suddenly brought to tears, not tears of sadness but JOY. i am so blessed to be an artist and i enjoy seeing the works of other artists as well. the Lord has blessed us, artists with 'creative' abilities. Excellent work!
Rolf, that was a beautifully made film!
Most awesome video on youtube!!! A spiritual journey...(I know that sounds somewhat crazy).
A beautiful film. Its style and choice of music fits wonderfully with the pottery. So relaxing but engauging at the same time.
+catherine stephenson Thank you kindly. I really worked to tie the music to the video. It helped to have great music that I could edit to, and listen to, hundreds of times. It stayed fresh, no matter how many times I went back to it during the edit.
Very glad you enjoyed it that much. It was a joy to create this short film.
@RolfParkerHoughton you are incredible, you inspired me thank you!

Very astonishing and conceptual ceramic work, and an exelent film documentation on it. I am realy pleased with it.
I don't even have words for this absolute talent
Thanks for the comment.
Do you mean the video or the carving, or both?
The carving. Can't even dream of talent like that.
Thanks for sharing amazing work with us...
Priceless!

Oh, glad you liked it. Potters are great to film.
What an amazing piece of art...thank you for sharing your methodology...I will have to try the iron oxide for my instrument making....:) Cheers! Vicki
Many thanks.
You have a beautiful soul to create such a beautiful piece. Bravo!
@wolland333 Thanks, Thanks. I loved making it, and I am glad you enjoyed watching it.
This is a beautiful video! I am going to show it to my high school ceramics students when we do sgraffito.

Oh, thanks for letting me know you liked it. Coincidentally, I happen to be sitting in the Unulun Tile studio at Natalie Blake's,as I type this.
Oh thanks. This video was really a pleasure to create.
Esplêndido trabalho!!!!! E que lugar maravilhoso.. que linda vista da tua janela..
There is spirituality in the attempt to create beauty. That's part of why I enjoy working with artisans. I am very glad you enjoyed the video.
Thanks, Franco Stano.

I hope eventually to pull together all these small films about creation into one larger feature film.
Glad you liked the video. I loved making it.

1) That is so BEAUTIFUL. For all that hard work and imagination it should cost several grand!
2) What is the music? It's awesome.

Чудесно! Я тоже так попробую однажды. А что за материал используется? Полимерная глина?

it looks to me as though the clay was leather hard, then they sgraffito carved the red clay slip off. And then they fired it and then they glazed it and then they fired it again.
... Nice Work
its amezing art
Hii Can you please let me now what the red coat on the clay is?
I’m doing an assignment off this what tools did you use
I asked the folks at unaluntile and they say that they use a " porceline stoneware".
Thanks, Hurr Durr.
They use iron oxide, which is basically rust, to paint the tiles before they carve them.
