The first time I listened to this song was September 17, 2018. It was a bad time for me. I remember sitting on a makeshift roof, having climbed it with so much difficulty, at 4 in the morning. I listened to this song on loop till the sun came out. That was the first time I ever wrote and here's the poem I wrote that day:

Michael Kiwanuka is a great and lovely singer-songwriter from London. His album Love & Hate is amazing. This song is the theme song of the incredible TV show Big Little Lies which features Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Alexander Skarsgård and Adam Scott.
One of the greatest songs! I recommend Love & Hate by the same artist.

For those who don't seem to understand the video...The father has a heart attack in the car and dies. If you notice in the first of the video the father is holding his chest. Watch it a few times and you will see. Beautiful song! I love Michael Kiwanuka!

I think it’s his dad…and maybe the son just moved in full time with his kind of, weekend dad. maybe after the loss of the mother or grand parent who raised him or some situation where now this is the new best environment for him(?)… And both being thrown into this new situation (kind of unsure how to do it), are both kind of slowly trying to figure it out. I get vibes of the dad being a good guy who maybe wasn’t always in a position in life where he would be the main parental figure or the father in a traditional family unit. He is young looking to have a teenage son, and when that’s the case (young adults or teenagers having a child), a lot of times things don’t work out as far as the relationship of the parents. A life with someone else is hard work in the best of situations anyway, throw in the stress of having a child when ur not ready (emotionally, financially, etc.) and a split up is no surprise. So maybe the young father is out of the house while the boy grows up, maybe he has his own growing up to do, maybe he learns the hard way (drugs, jail, unhealthy lifestyle, whatever…), and so throughout the boys life he sees his dad but not on the regular father/son kind of way…more like a cool uncle who comes around and takes u out on ur birthday, or u spend some weekends with, etc… fast forward and something happens that makes the situation different and now the best place/only place or person for this 15 year old boy to go be raised by is the dad. He’s a good guy so of course he takes him in… and he has his life together enough to be able to…but he’s not so far removed from a time when he wouldn’t have been capable…and he knows that but he loves his son. He also knows his son is going thru some things. Maybe emotionally bc of the loss or change in situation, or maybe just being a teenage boy and the things teenage boys go through or are tempted by. He’s been around and seen a lot in life that gives him the wisdom and insight to peep things creeping up from under the surface. It’s clear when u see the father noticing thinz😢gs off in the distance or from different angles. I feel like maybe the father sees, in his son some of the same emotions that he faced at that age and is fearful that his son may go down a similarly dark path as he did when he was that age… So to wrap it up, they have each other and there’s no other choice which is different for both of them. And as they are trying to make the best of it and get to know each other for really the first time (as father and son, as the men they are now…father being more mature now, and son being basically grown/coming into adulthood)…the father sees the emotional storm brewing in his son, and KNOWS from personal experience what that can lead to (his son losing his way due to unhealthy coping mechanisms while trying to deal with heartache and pain) if it’s not approached carefully and dealt with correctly. His father also KNOWS from personal experiences that those unhealthy coping mechanisms only lead to more heart ache and pain or self destruction, which is difficult to come back from if it’s possible or doesn’t end up with loss of life…and he does not want that for his son, he doesn’t want his son to go thru what he had to go thru, but he doesn’t know how to go about trying to help his teenage son being new to this situation and dynamic of their relationship…and still quite unsure of his abilities to even be a good role model. That’s kind of what I took from the music video or at least that kind of ballpark of vibes. Of course that’s basically my story in a couple of ways (as the father figure more recently, and as the son who moved in with my dad at 13)…so maybe I’m just seeing what makes sense to me. Either way, I cried my eyes out the first time I saw this video…and I still do every other time I see it…

You nailed it, however there were other important elements tying the lyrics to the video IMHO.
Such as perhaps the son has hidden his modern dance dreams from his father, maybe due to the stigma attached to such things in part of the black community. The dance is one of terrible agony and loss as we realize he has hidden a big part of himself from the father just as the father his his health issues (or denied them to himself as well) from his son, culminating in his death in the car.
Then again, maybe I read way more into the song than was actually being conveyed in the video.
