It's an 18-spd Trans. 4 gears, low range/high range and then split 1/2 gears for each. 4x4 is 16 forward gears. Then you can high/low range the Lo gear (crawling gear). When you were starting off, that wasn't 3rd gear. That was 5th gear. Then when you thought you were in 4th gear, that was 7th gear. Then 9th gear. You were skipping your split gears or 1/2 gears. Everytime you don't split a gear, you are skipping a gear. (Which is fine when you are empty). I know this because I am a trucker and I have driven everything under the sun that has wheels. Including operating trains/engines.
It’s not split gears. The standard box is 4 gears with automated high-low switch in a double H pattern. First row is 1,2, second row 3,4, then third shifts to high, and gives you 5,6, fourth slot to the right gives you 7,8. The extra gears he mentions are crawler and working gears that reduce the main gearbox. Overdrive is a planetary gear that sits between the engine and gearbox and it just reduces the rpm. Not a very common setup. Plenty of pics on the Internet of what the different levers do
I don't think that the unimog is a truck, it's mainly a tractor, crane, construction equipment. Unimogs are such amazing vehicles. Especially the newest models like the U5030 - so comfy for such a big truck and capable of more things than most people even would try to do.
True that the Unimog was not originally a Military design. But it worked great for many military applications. Google the "Buffel" mrap developed by South Africa during the border war 66 to 89. The Buffel was the standard South African Army troop transporter which was a converted Unimog. They took the cab and bed off and replaced them with a v shaped bin and protected driver compartment and used them for the next couple of decades. The basic vehicle remained standard Unimog though.
Unimog is not military oriented it was designed for farming, so farmers that couldn't buy a truck and a tractor could use the Unimog for both if they needed.
It is an agricultural vehicle by primary design, with added functionality. We used a 416 unit as a daily in 1980-81. 5.7 litre NA straight six Diesel, diff-locks on every axle, unstoppable. Not meant to be fast, just meant to have unequalled endurance and longevity. With 500mm ground clearance, what can go wrong?
The UNIMOG was built in Germany and is used by towns and communities as a universal tool, as well as by the military, fire brigade and technical relief organisations. It is the only vehicle that has driven at altitudes of 5000 metres!

The refuelling threw me for a second… The Green pump is Petrol (gasoline) here in the UK, diesel is Black. That’s definitely one to watch out for if I ever get to the US and have to fuel up. Great Truck though.
You are a brave man to run a Unimog at 75 mph :D In most places they are governed to 55mph and even then they are pretty unstable with their high center of gravity and comparetively short wheelbase
Ours is rated at 87km/h on standard tyres. Apart from having the engine scream, it’s not a problem to drive. Not a sports car, of course, but it’s pretty good for an off road truck.

Hehehe😂😂 first of all, where did you get the double cabin from? It's damn rare. Second, you have some facts wrong about the Unimogs.. But the most important, this isn't an old model! This is the latest model that is out there 😅
In Europe, the Unimog is a work machine more than a classic vehicle...like a tractor, harvester or mixer...literally no one drives them except those who really need them.

Looks like a blast to drive. Great review Andre!
Not a daily highway plush cruiser but definitely a super cool crazy off-road beast..
Interesting and must have been a pretty fun video to make.
This is a true workhorse.
Unimog stands for Universal Motor Gerät, or universal motor tool, a post war equipment designed for farmers, foresters and the like.
You must have to lower your tire pressure for it to be low enough to fit in the garage
Great for commute when no other vehicle can go. It will put any Jeep to shame 👍🤩
My Starbucks drive thru is only 9ft 3in. Will this fit?
The Unimog is one of the best you can drive Offroad
This is hilarious 😂. Love it.
Exactly how does one trip qualify as daily driving, Comrade Andrey?
What year is the vehicle?
What model year is this Mog?
You are a brave man to run a Unimog at 75 mph :D
In most places they are governed to 55mph and even then they are pretty unstable with their high center of gravity and comparetively short wheelbase
Ours is rated at 87km/h on standard tyres. Apart from having the engine scream, it’s not a problem to drive. Not a sports car, of course, but it’s pretty good for an off road truck.
This particular one has an aftermarket overdrive between the clutch housing and the transmission.
its just a wee little chap. A jolly old fellow. A spry wee sprite. A merry old soul. A cheery young lad. A sprightly good gent. A chipper little tyke. A merry-hearted sage. A blithe old chap. A lively little tot. A genial old master. A perky young whippersnapper.
Probably the only reliable merc out there.
sehr schön- viel Spaß damit! 🙂
Hydraulic brakes? If thats the case why do you need to build air pressure?
Age old question...Where to find parts...
Can/would you do an Ike run...?
Scania trucks are in the USA now, can you drive one? Or the iHOP with the scania engine? I think ppl will love the motor!!!
Hehehe😂😂 first of all, where did you get the double cabin from? It's damn rare. Second, you have some facts wrong about the Unimogs.. But the most important, this isn't an old model! This is the latest model that is out there 😅
How much does one of these cost?
In Europe, the Unimog is a work machine more than a classic vehicle...like a tractor, harvester or mixer...literally no one drives them except those who really need them.
Lots of people use it for over landing
287 and I-25? You in Colorado??
Does it have Apple CarPlay?
That’s a question I’ve often asked myself. Would like to try!
Hack: Glue a piece of carpet to the steering column to stop that clatter from the key chain. Cheap mod.
This unimog in this video has 8 gears forwards and can Split in half so he has 16 gears forwards and the same are for the backwards😊
Put this in the "shit I really don't need, unless I win the lottery and then it's my first purchase!!!" category :) I would LOVE to pull up to some fancy Valet in this truck and see....
The Mog was originally designed to replace the tractor, so used as a farm vehicle.
the unimog its the same as the mbtrack, the only diference is the cab
"Where could you park your Unimog?"
"Oh, pretty much wherever I like"
Sure you could daily drive it if you have money coming out of every nook and cranny possible, But she is a farm truck from birth then maintenance, construction all that also military but not primarily I drive a 1970s series 3 land rover daily with turbo diesel, I can feel the pain on roads and highways same as the mog. Mogs are awesome vehicles
