I'm old person now and no longer live in Sheffield. I really loved the City when I was young. Just at the traffic lights at Darnall is now a light shop this was a Cinema at the time though it was called Darnall Cinema it was either called Little Dicks some times and the other name was The Bug Hut. I work occasionally in the Darnall Liberal Club occasionally behind the bar but was the resident DJ from 1975 until 1984. The Libs was one of the best Working Men,s Clubs in Sheffield. The community was really down to earth and lovely people, at Christmas time it would take over £30.000, a really busy Club. It was a sorry day it burnt down as it was the heart of Darnall. Thank you for the memories.

@@SheffieldVideos At one time Wigfalls used the old Darnall Cinema building as a shop before they moved to the premises now used by Weldricks Pharmacy. I think the 'honeycomb style' building between used to be Tesco (and I am told they still own the building) latterly becoming a Wilkinsons
@@SheffieldVideos There were two cinemas in Darnall. The 'Little Dick' - if you turned up late or back of the queue you got one of the the better seats for the same price - and the Lyric which was virtually opposite the old Meadow pub. Many happy times in both!!!!
I originate from Darnall and can remember the greyhound stadium that closed in 1963. They used to get big crowds at the weekend. Also the pubs and clubs, Wellington, Rose and Crown, Industry, Meadow, Darnall Green WMC, Horticultural. Enjoyed the video

I used to walk from Darnall up Prince Of Wales Road with my Grandma as a child; She used to live on Bowden Wood Estate. So many happy memories seeing Darnall again, but in the 1950's and early 60's there were no immigrants.

I was born 88 Cravens road in Darnel in 1959 road, which no longer exits from redevelopment. I now live in Abu Dhabi in the UAE. Images like this are fantastic and bring so many memories back. Yes, it had fabulous pubs for an autumn walk around, the Bell, Industry, etc.But the best end of the night day was Lomas's Fish and chip shop just before the bus stop...... Discover!!!!

There is only one Main Road, from the bridge (where it connects with Handsworth Road) it runs down the hill crosses Prince Of Wales Road, though Darnall terminus and turns right opposite Station Road (at the junction with Staniforth Road), then continues to the junction with Catley Road and York Road where it turns left to go passed where the Darnall Lyric cinema used to be and on to become Darnall Road. You note the 'new build housing' starting on your left from opposite Jeffcock Road, these are all built on the old Cravens premises.
Yes indeed i remember the cycle shop... Used to go there after school (greenlands school).. Just to look at the BMX in the window and drool over it... Never asked parents to buy it... Never saw the price but I always assumed it was well out of our league back then......(in the 70s early 80s)

Played for Darnall Wesley football team in the Bible class league, early 80s, Happy Days!! Then spent a few years working out of the old dairy building next to the bridge on Broughton lane
The Honeycomb style building(5:45) used to be a Tesco in 72 as a 10 yr old it was the best place to nick all yer sweets En-route to High Hazels park boating pond,then to the golf course to nick the balls to sell to other golfers on the way back, a good day had by all. Always said there a thieving lot in Darnall. Those were the days my friend we thought they never end la la la la la la la la la la
great to see fella, a long long long time since i was in Darnall. on Greenland road over the road, roughly from where you started was where Keatons was, we went and picketed with them back in the 80s, and went to the supermarket over the road and bought them food. Also you mentioned old Charlie peace, he was my great great great grandad. Studley Court i lived on there till about aged 10, when it was a road, Studley road, all old terraced houses on both sides.

I lived at the bottom of Prince of Wales Road until late 1971 then moved to Stovin Road just off Greenland Road and near to Broughton Lane Bridge. Unfortunately both houses were pulled down rather than do them up. Not clean area as we had the steel works and collieries but it was a fantastic vibrant community.
It may only make a short video, but on Wincobank avenue there are some really nice sculptures on the green there. You could start at Shiregreen club (full monty) before it gets demolished and go round the sculptures and could then zoom down Newman road past Brendan Ingalls gym and down to the sculpture of the boxing gloves on barrow road.
Well done, an excellent video. The High Hazel's Institute was once called Whitby Road School. The building looks the same as when my sisters went there in the 1930s.

Many years ago my Uncle kept the Duke of York on main rd Darnall,it was quite well known for a swearing parrot on the bar.this was about 45/50 years ago.I haven’t really been to Sheffield since so don’t really recognise much of today’s Sheffield.As a young chap with a interest in transport I spent a lot of my time when visiting down at the Greenland Rd bus depot.Another thing that sticks in the mind was all the pigeon lofts on the hill behind the depot.My uncles name was Fred Etheridge and his wife Doreen.
Darnall on map is or is one of the biggest areas in Sheffield. You have filmed a tiny portion of it. Should have filmed lower part of darnall around Staniforth road, Ouseburn Croft, Nidd road and Kashmir gardens or even gone across to near Phillimore road
I use to live in Darnall when I was completing my Masters from SHU back in 2008-09, and lived after some time, what a city Sheffield is, really missed that time, can you make a video from Sheffield train station to Castle market via SHU city campus please,,,,
We had no worries or issues at all with filming here. It was totally fine to wander around and the people were friendly. Like you say I think it's reputation is worse than it's reality!

Yes Darnall has changed a lot. I am from Attercliffe but spent much of my spare time in Darnall with friends from Firth Park grammar school, and girls. Very friendly place, nice people. What about doing a walk next for Attercliffe and Brightside ?

Last time I was in Darnall I " discovered" the railway station. Many years ago I used Brightside station regularly, I wonder why Brightside and Attercliffe stations were closed and Darnall survived ? Nothing to do with Meadowhall as they were closed many years before it was built.. I'm going back to the 1970's and used to do karate at Attercliffe Vestry Hall, would have been 1973 actually

I lived in Darnell over seventy years ago, firstly in Industry Road and the in Wetherby Road with in those days went from the main road(Staniforth Road) up to the railway line. One long row of terraced houses on both sides with an alley along the top from Acres Hill Road to Station Road. There was a footbridge over the railway line at Acres Hill Road and I think there was an underpass at the station if my memory serves me well.
Yes Darnell has changed for the worst ,used to roam round there ,duke of darnall for l ,was at an auction in Sheffield,noticed a painting ,knew who it was straight away ,duke of darnall left a bid £40 ,didn’t get it ,yes darnall has lost its charm now ,can u please film old attercliffe,,Harry briscoe 👍👍

I think Keetons was further down Greenland Road to the left (where we first emerge onto Greenland Road) passed the ex B & Q
Its a pity you missed out High Hazels Park in Darnall which is much used and loved.

Unfortunately the Duke of York has been demolished thanks to the Sheffield City Council and Lidl.

deltors, the Old Bradley Well was renamed the Terminus. The Duke of York was demolished.

I lived in Darnell over seventy years ago, firstly in Industry Road and the in Wetherby Road with in those days went from the main road(Staniforth Road) up to the railway line. One long row of terraced houses on both sides with an alley along the top from Acres Hill Road to Station Road. There
was a footbridge over the railway line at Acres Hill Road and I think there was an underpass at the station if my memory serves me well.

Yes Darnell has changed for the worst ,used to roam round there ,duke of darnall for l ,was at an auction in Sheffield,noticed a painting ,knew who it was straight away ,duke of darnall left a bid £40 ,didn’t get it ,yes darnall has lost its charm now ,can u please film old attercliffe,,Harry briscoe 👍👍
