  • Puka Nacua had arguably the greatest rookie season of all time in 2023, and it came as an absolute shock to NFL analysts and fans alike. He broke several rookie receiving records in his first season with the Rams, but the craziest part is that he accomplished that after falling into the fifth round in the 2023 NFL Draft!
But that begs the question: how did he fall so far? What did NFL coaches and scouts miss about Nacua in the pre-draft process, and how can we tell who is similar to him moving forward? Today, we're going to be looking back at Nacua's rookie season, collegiate stats, and measurables to see where the NFL got it wrong with the young stud wide receiver.
Do you agree or disagree with my analysis? Let me know down in the comments below! Also leave any video suggestions in the comments and I'll try to get to them as quickly as possible.

It's no accident. The Rams watch TAPE. They look for high character guys, team captains, people that are teachable and motivated, respectful and dedicated. The Rams posted a video of them talking about Puka BEFORE they drafted him, they had BIG plans for him based on what they were looking at.
Having a super smart guy like Kupp there to teach him was a BIG help, too.
Puka and Rams culture under McVay and company is why he shot out of the gate. Also, having a dart throwing ace like Stafford didn't hurt either.

Another reason he slipped into the 5th round was he wasn't projected to go until the 5th through 7th and some people even thought he'd slip through the draft and become an undrafted free agent. When you have someone expected to last that long you do not use an early round pick on him. You just make sure to pick him a little bit before his expected draft range. That's what the Rams did, why use a 3rd round pick on him when you can get him in the 5th and not only in the 5th but with their third pick in the 5th.

lol everything you listed to look out for in totality he had a bad grade in, his total grade was 4th round talent at the highest. This is a prime example of landing spot and why having a plan for these players, is so important. That and mentality, i'm sure Nacua is just a hyper competitor and has a mind set of improvement. That would carry him to success no matter what he does. Theirs a reason why after over 100 years it isn't a science and never will be.

This dude is gonna be a top-five receiver for the next ten years at least. Already better than Kupp

No matter what physical attributes an athlete may have there is no test that can measure ones heart.

Everyone would agree that he's top-six if he was a first round pick

Attitude cannot be seen in a statistic. The Rams just look at what kind of team member and person they are. Rams see this and fold that into their statistics.
