Port Klang Congestion 2024 caused by Red Sea Crisis | Global supply chain Crisis | car trade impacts

- Port Klang, one of Malaysia’s major ports, is currently facing significant congestion. Ships are experiencing delays of up to nine hours when docking at Port Klang terminals. This congestion is primarily attributed to the ongoing Red Sea crisis and its ripple effects on global shipping routes.
The Red Sea Crisis and Its Impact
Houthi Attacks: The crisis began in the first half of December 2023 when Houthi rebels initiated attacks close to the Bab-el Mandeb Strait. As a result, ships altered their routes, opting to sail around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope instead of using the Suez Canal. This change added approximately two weeks to transit times from China to Europe.
Congestion Chain Reaction: The altered shipping routes disrupted the balance between vessel transit time and capacity. More ships started calling at transshipment ports, including Port Klang. However, the port lacks sufficient infrastructure to handle the increased demand, leading to extended waiting times for berths and longer port stays.
Chokepoint at the Strait of Malacca: The Strait of Malacca, a crucial chokepoint in global trade, has been significantly affected. Singapore, the largest port in the Strait, witnessed congestion as ships diverted from the Suez Canal route. Vessel waiting times increased to 3-5 days, impacting the Asia-Europe and Asia-North America routes. This congestion also triggered a chain reaction at nearby facilities, including Port Klang.
Temporary Relief and Future Outlook
Past Average Docking Time:
In previous years, the average berthing delay (ATA) for container vessels at Westports was approximately 1.9 hours, while at Northport, it was around 9.3 hours.
Current Congestion:
As of now, ships are experiencing delays of up to nine hours when docking at Port Klang terminals due to the ongoing Red Sea crisis and its impact on global shipping routes
Temporary Improvement: Recent data shows that congestion at South Asian ports has improved from 27% (June) to 9% (July) of global congestion. However, this improvement may be temporary. Carriers omitted some ports in July, contributing to the ease in congestion. But vessels are expected to return to Singapore and Port Klang in August, likely exacerbating congestion once again.
Industry Players’ Perspective: Despite the challenges, industry players consider the congestion at Port Klang manageable. However, ongoing monitoring and proactive measures are essential to prevent further disruptions.
Port Klang plays a crucial role in the import and export of commercial vehicles in Malaysia.
The port has dedicated facilities for vehicle handling, with a capacity to manage over 1 million vehicles per year.
On average, Port Klang manages the import of over 500,000 and 300,000 exports of vehicles.
The impact of global commercial vehicle trade resulting from the Red Sea Crisis remains uncertain and clarity is expected to emerge in the coming months.
