I do find it interesting though that as teenagers, both Mark and David (who did not know each other at the time) wanted red Stratocasters like their hero Hank B. Marvin of The Shadows. Alas, both had to settle for Hofner knock-offs. Great minds think alike
Mark was the sole reason I took up the guitar back in '79, for me he is the greatest contemporary musician ever to walk this planet. Without him I would never have played in numerous bands, culminating in my own tribute band, spent the past 30+ years building my own Strats and never have met my wife and live the life I lead today. It's purely my personal opinion but Mark has lived such a full life, putting so much into it constantly since pre '77 that I think now at 66 he should seriously think about limiting the live Gigs/tours and scale it all down. I know we all love to see the genius live but he just looks spent to me right now (I'm 66 too and I know how it feels!) Lighten up Mark and take it easy - we will all still love you !!

One of the best guitarist of all time! Superb music, superb chords and melodies. The band is also good. I watched him live twice and it was simply amazing. Back in the days Mark Knopfler formed probably one of the best bands of the 1980's Dire Straits, which is among other bands, one of the best of all times in the history of music. I cannot imagine any of today's bands to reach what bands such as Dire Straits have reached throughout their careers. Music and artists from the 1970's and 1980's have something that today's musicians do not have.
When I was 16 my dad asked me what I would like for my birthday: I replied the new Dire Straits album. I wore that album out and still have it. Plain white cover just the name Dire Straits. I am 55 now and still when I hear a Dire Straits song I stop everything and listen.Thank you Mark Knopfler and your band members.
He continues being a brilliant guitarist, but now he has became in a astonishing and wonderful compositor. Maybe nowadays there are millions of guitar players very talented, virtuosos and amazing, but his way of playing is unique, his sound is unrepeatable and his works throughout history. It a impossible to declare one guitarist as the greatest. There are do many talented players. Some never get recognition.Msrk Knooffler was one who created a whole new concept. I rember the Sultsns of Swing was not considered rock. David Gilmore certainly has a melodic sustaining sound. With a tremendous impact. Of course it's easy to say Eric Clapton was to limited, but that would be a mistake. So many over the years, Mike Bloomfield was way ahead of the times. Jimi Hendtix was more of an empath just channeling. Who knows where that might have gone. Jimi Page was a studied musician, experimenting. But how could you pass Chet or Less, or Charlie Christian playing such spontaneous stuff with less equipment. I do prefer Mark Knofler, but I have to tip my hat to all of them. Doc. Watson, and Tommy Emanuel really amaze me. Still Roy Buchanan, was the Tele king, and let's not forget Robert Johnson, I swear I though there was someone playing with him. In the modern age of electric guitar, Vetter, Van Halen, even Larry Corriell, not to mention A J Smith, as well as oft over looked George Harrison have made their statement. Sadly, I don't see anyone new coming up, but surely some one will. I've played 60 years and still feel excited when I am inspired. Mark inspires me!

I was 16, painting Key sound studios. Mark rolled up in a black Porsche, in a black suit. Didn't know who he was then. Managed to get into the rehearsal room, and listen as he played Telegraph Road, as he waited for the guys. A life time ago and a Rock Legend later he still possess the capacity to thrill and move the emotion. A TRUE musician and song master. Love ya Mark. (:-)

I read comments about the way Mark Knofler plays guitar. He is still amazing. In France we have Charles Aznavour, he is now more than 80 yo, of cours the voice is not the same, but he is still a master. So is Mark Knofler, he is and always be a king of guitar!
