    MONSTER HUNTER RISE
If you’re like me, you enjoy playing games completely solo. But if you’re like me, you might also look at some multiplayer or co-op focused games and wonder, what if I played that game by myself? Would it be fun? One series that’s consistently prompted me to ask that very question is Monster Hunter. And with the recent PC release of Monster Hunter Rise, plus a new DLC on the way, I decided to take the plunge. Having never played a Monster Hunter game before, I deliberately played the vast majority of Monster Hunter Rise completely offline and by myself. So, did I have fun? Would I recommend this game to other single player junkies? If you want to find out, then I hope you’ll join me for my single player review of Monster Hunter Rise.
Before we begin, I have a few disclaimers. First, if you’ve never played a Monster Hunter game, you’re in the right place. I was also new to the series before making this review and I hope my experience can shed some light on what you can expect if you give this game a shot as a single player experience. Second, while the first part of this review is dedicated to comparing the single and multiplayer experiences, the rest is a general purpose review to give you an idea of what the entire game is like if you do play mostly solo. Now, let’s begin.
    SOLO VS. CO-OP
Before getting into the details, what is Monster Hunter Rise? Well, it’s a deep, and I mean deep action RPG with engaging combat, nuanced character customization, and compelling environments. As for story, well, don’t expect much. Your village is seeing an uptick in monsters thanks to a phenomenon called The Rampage and it’s up to you to fight them off. That’s literally it, but again, what Monster Hunter Rise lacks in narrative, it more than makes up for with deep and rewarding gameplay.
Each mission, of which there are dozens, has you traveling to one of the game’s 5 themed maps where you’ll explore, and typically hunt one of the game’s titular monsters. Take one down and you’ll harvest its parts - bones, shells, pelts, and the like - which you can then use to upgrade your weapons and armor. This, in turn, will make you more powerful and better prepared for your next hunt. While the gameplay systems of monster hunter are relatively complex, such as the upgrading and combat mechanics, the overall gameplay loop is actually pretty simple. It really is just hunt, loot, upgrade, repeat.
Now, if you’re like me, you may have the conception that this loop is inherently better with friends. Or even that it might just plain suck if you go it alone. Well, as someone who loves single player games, and who typically shies away from experiences that require or encourage multiplayer, I’m here to tell you that’s flat out not the case.
Instead, Monster Hunter Rise caters to both multiplayer and single player purists, but as for the base content, it actually offers more to players who want to hunt solo. That’s because the game has two main quest types. Village Quests and Hub Quests. Village Quests follow the story and make up what is more or less a traditional, single player campaign. These quests can only be played solo. Then there are Hub Quests, which feature very similar if not identical objectives to Village Quests, but these can be played either solo or in co-op. To put it more simply, if you want to play in co-op, you can only play Hub Quests. But if you want to play solo, the entire game is open for you to play. You can play either Hub Quests or Village Quests.
Now, as you would expect, village quests are great solo. It’s how they’re meant to be played and, well, it’s the only way you can play them. However, if you take on any of the Hub Missions by yourself, they can be a bit of a slog. That’s because the monsters you’ll face, while identical in appearance to those you’ll face in Village Missions, are over-leveled. This is just so they last longer against two, three, or four hunters. Take them on solo and yes, they can be more challenging, but doing so is mostly just tedious. It’s for this reason that if you do play by yourself, I’d actually recommend just sticking to the story campaign, at least before you sufficiently upgrade your equipment. The missions are fun and much better paced for one single hunter.

7:21 One thing I will recommend to new players (if anyone reads this) is that one of the most helpful things that helped me get through both this game and World (but it was more important to me then as it was my first MH game) is online tutorials. There are tons of guides, tips and tricks, along with other things that make it 10x easier to learn, understand, and use all of these mechanics.

Rise is a single and multiplayer game, but the “hub” is the multiplayer quest counter, but it the health and damage of the monsters scales to how many people are in the hunt, and it changes dynamically depending if people join the quest late or not, but that means you can play this game completely solo if you want

Loved this review. I started the game understanding that the hub quests were of similar difficulty to solo monsters of previous monster hunter titles. So I started this game playing the first few single player quests, then immediately moved on to hub quests and finished both hub and solo side by side, both as a single player. So in my experience, hub quests felt normal length and single player quests felt too short. I think this game provides a challenge to those who want it.

great review, I loved Monster Hunter World, and my "hunting buddies" also do too, so playing with friends aspect was always something i considered, then rise comes out, and my friends didnt want to jump the wagon, since it was more expensive than World when world came out on PC, and they thought the asking price was just not worth it for it being a switch port, so im in a pinch where i would actually buy the game in an instant if my hunting buddies also did too, but im just so tempted to get it to just play solo, and i found this review, it made me change my mind that maybe i dont have to worry about the multiplayer aspect after all

Nice, i was wondering what you thought about this game since i saw your tweet. I've played pretty much every Monster Hunter title solo and i think Rise is the better single player experience. Hunts are fast and the grinding is less demanding compared to previous titles, which encourages experimenting with different weapon types. When i get bored of hunting, there's a photo mode that lets me go all 'pokemon snap' and fill up the monster index with photos. Great review by the way👍 i hope you come back for Sunbreak !

The village quests must have changed since mh world, in world soon as you engaged in the fight you could summon help. Then the hp of the fight would increase, I think the hardest thing about multi player on these games is you get used to how the monster attacks you as an individual, but with a party you are uncertain if the attack is going for you, or for the other player making your reaction harder. Another thing with multi-player is say you need a horn break. Well that part is going to be a lot harder to break and if not everyone is focusing on that part, it can be difficult for that break. Take for instance daora horns, if the complete party wasn't focused on those horns, you were never going to get a horn break
I do think certain weapons need a better tutorial. In particular the ammo types of heavy and light bowgun. Charge blade could be more helpful on what phials and stuff are and the switch axe to what the benefits of axe vs sword are

Like you, MHR was both my first game in the series and the first game I’ve ever spent any significant amount of time in multiplayer. I made a point of avoiding multiplayer in games due to the usually toxic atmosphere and constant banter.
MHR has been a revelation in this aspect.
Because of both the streamlined communication and the quality of the community itself, I’ve now spent over 150 hrs in multiplayer, filled with nothing but totally positive experiences. Like you mentioned, I could just as well be playing with a bunch of very polite AIs.
It’s a really great game, very confidently realized, that rewards any effort you put into it.

Monster hunter fights are still mostly focused on being face to face, especially with rise counter heavy combat which lends itself to a really fun solo experience. Same for mh world but that one had sieges and raids you needed multiplayer for. You still can have a lot of fun in multiplayer even tho it kind of makes a few fights cake walks.

Solo is fun in Rise, but I also love the multiplayer. If you want to grind, you can join quests like mentioned in the video. If you just want to hang out a bit and take on random queats, you can join a lobby.
Some of my favorite moments in Rise were from joining random lobbies. It is very rewarding to go against a Teostra multiple times with the same group of people beforee you finally take it down. Or at the end of the quest everyone does a weapon pose together. I highly recommend everyone try out lobbies. If you feel a little self concious about your abilities, create a lobby asking for help, or saying taking it easy.

The game is awesome, looking at people playing doesnt do it justice at all, thats the reason I ditched it multiple times before. But only get it on sale, because I dont think the original price is worth it. The replay ability is quite good. Be reminded, if you want to play coop in this game, only the host progressed in story quests maps or such.

I love the idea of a series just about soloing multiplayer games! I vastly prefer single player, especially now that we have a baby coming an multiplayer just won’t even be an option anymore. Final Fantasy 14 is great and mostly single player friendly. There is mandatory group content scattered throughout the main story but most of the game can be played solo. Even most of that group content will soon become optional and you’ll be able to complete it with AI companions instead

As a player of MH3U, MHW-IB and MHR:S, I actually would recommend new players to hunt solo. In Rise you have to advance the story a lot of the time through hub quests. Hub quests have monsters with much bigger HP pools (lol you actually discuss this at 04:18). Multiplayer hub quests makes the HP bloat even worse, and MP quests may take you longer than solo because of the quality of your teammates.

I bought this game recently after watching the review and have put about 50 hours into it, and just started on the Sunbreak DLC.
After playing solo throughout most of the game (aside from a couple urgent quests that were played online with strangers), I can say it's definitely got a learning curve.
For instance, the game has 3 difficulties, Low Rank (the one you start out with), High Rank (unlocked after 4* hub completion) and Master Rank with the Sunbreak DLC after 7* hub completion.
Online guides are sort of missing bits and pieces, trying to navigate the weapon trees means going to higher ranks and defeating the higher tier monsters to unlock new options.
Also, gear gets quickly outdated in all 3 difficulties, at Master Rank, my rathalos high rank armour had way less armour than a Great Izuchi in Master Rank, one of the first monsters you might fight.
You basically restart the game at those points (aside from having to craft lower tier weapons to upgrade to high tiers).
I'd definitely recommend playing with friends, the first 20-30 hours are probably spent just catching up to the point where veterans who have been playing for years are at.

Though it has been said many times already in the comments, I too would like to express my thanks for this review. One of the things that frustrate me is when certain other reviewers prioritise multiplayer experiences in videogames, which can make it hard for a solo player to decide whether to purchase a game or not. The game may have a solo campaign / story mode, but if the review is all about multiplayer, or if the game only really works as a multiplayer, then that's a red flag for me.
Then there's also the controls. Even though there's a demo for MH: Rise and I've tried it, I've found it hard to wrap my head around all of the controls available in the game. I could probably 'hack and slash' my way to a degree, but if I want to 'get guud' then I need more practice... and I only got a few more attempts of the demo left.
Your video has basically sold me that, if I stick with it I can learn to like this game (and other similar games such as MH Generations, or God Eater 3). I'll wait for a deep sale, but next time that comes around, I'll probably give it a shot.

If you thought exploring on this game was fun then you should try monster hunter world. I feel like world has very fun maps to explore for a single player and with catching endemic life it is even more engaging than rise. I also feel like world caters to single players more because it has more of the story quests throughout and has phenomenal pacing. It definitely is more fun for a single player since I got through both it and iceborne but the slog of rises hub quests make it to where I can't even get past the first story before sunbreak.

Village quests where supposed to be like a tutorial or a nerfed version of the monsters, not a solo experience.
Hub quests are something more typical you would expect on a monster hunter game, but It's still balanced to play alone.
Having people on multiplayer only makes some stats scale on the monster.
I find it really weird that people think that monster hunter is a multiplayer focused game, it simply has that feature but no hunts are designed only to be played in a group.

    • @aazirxd7490

this is true and this video is misleading. Hub quest monsters only scales up when theres an additional player on the quest. So when playing against solo hubquest monsters, its still nowhere near as the hps of the multiplayer monsters. Theres also only a little bit of content for the village quests, afterwards the rest and most of the content is on the hubquests.

i play this game on both online and offline
if i want to increase my skill and get used to monster move set then i go solo, which help to prevent embarrassment to get carted on multiplayer
if i just want to have fun then i go to multiplayer, things like paralyze and KO has more value on multiplayer

I always did wonder, myself, what games in series like Monster Hunter, Toukiden, God Eater, and the like were good for those who don't want to play with others or those who can't play with others. I wish there was some kind of ranking system for these kinds of games that are very multiplayer-focused, for how fun they are to play solo. I never have anyone to play with, myself, nor the time to be able to go through a game where I can't pause, but I've always been interested in trying them out. I hate grinding for who knows how long just to be able to upgrade my stuff, though.

Mostly played monster hunter solo, been playing since tri and played all the psp versions.
Games were all fun solo. It's about earning your gear and the combat is fun.

The Hub quests are tougher because they're tougher quests by design. As mentioned by Idrees25, the HP scale with number of players so tackling them solo is not a problem. In fact, most serious MH players only farm solo, going into group hunts more for fun than for efficiency.

I've played hundreds of hours of world solo and almost 200 solo on rise. I play both solo and multi, enjoying both both mostly solo since coordinating with friends has gotten difficult these days since we all work full time with different shifts.

@@Foodiedad17 Personally, I prefer World/Iceborne. There's an appeal to Rise too but it's a bit too fast and flashy for my taste. I like mastering simplicity and there's too much to learn about every weapon in Rise for me to play them all anywhere near their potential.
In terms of quality as a video game they're both up there, imo which is better just depends on someone's taste.

also imo world has deeper combat rise has more variety and for me depth>variety i think you will like it but yeah its way harder to get into than rise for most people

Im play MH solo since the first title. First i had no online Connection.
Then with freedom unite i played a little bit in local with some other guys nearby. But again i ended up solo.
In world i played a little bit online but for the need of forced group quests but ended up solo again.
Now in sunbreak i played again a little bit online but got back to solo because the helpers are much better than other randoms 😂

i have play solo in most of case and for me solo are more fun because is quicker than multi and you learn better your weapon and monster pattern, lower mission like low/high rank and master rank in multi are fun but in anomaly investigation solo with follower are so much better for quick grind! (solo 80%/multi 20%)

I agree with most everything you said. A day and a half into this game say 5 to 8 hours. I did not like this game. It wasn't due to the graphics are game play they where both amazing on the Switch. It was mainly due to the depth and breadth of the game that I didn't understand. I gave it another day and learned a bit more and then another day and discovered that most of the information I was seeking was in the games submenus somewhere. Once I learned how to access said information it really got me hooked and I went from this game sucks to this game is Awesome.

Ever since I learned how to guard point in monster Hunter world, I've actually found playing solo easier than multiplayer. To the point that I no longer bring the cat or the dog when playing rise, just because that means the monster will always attack me and I know it will always attack me so there are no whiffed guard points anymore.

As a seasoned MH player I just wanted to say well done on this video. MH is NOT for everyone. It is hard to master and requires hundreds of hours to do so. You’ve explained everything the game has to offer quite eloquently. While I too prefer gaming as a solo endeavour, MH is the exception for me. My personal style is to solo a quest first, then replay it with others to grind for monster parts. Completing a quest is definitely faster with others. 30+ mins solo, 10-15 mins as a team.
    Happy hunting!

I played the hell out of monster hunter world. I played with friends most of the time, but after learning the monsters moves and patterns you can kill any minster solo. The gameplay can be hard at first, but you really feel like a complete badass when you master every mechanic of the game
