Hello! My name is Dave, I've been learning Finnish "properly" for only 2 months (since January 1st) which is why my Finnish is TERRIBLE (yes, I know it haha) This video is just to be used as a bit of a 'benchmark' for later on in this project/challenge to see how bad I was compared to 10 months later at the end of the year when the project finishes.
Either way, I hope you enjoyed it. My next challenge is to use Instagram for 7 days only speaking Finnish (5 stories per day) so if you're interested in seeing that, follow me over there! / dave.cad

Suomi perkele!
The fact that you said “52” as “viiskytkaks” and not “viisikymmentäkaksi”is amazing
Can you explain? I've never learned Finnish tho xd
Vladlen Gurovskii In Finnish no one actually says viisikymmentäkaksi, which is the actual way to say, literally means five tens two. Its easier to just say viiskytkaks
@@xmediocrityx it's shorter and easier to say that. Kinda like when people say "thanks" instead of "thank you".
@@xmediocrityx pronouncing "Viisikymmentäkaksi" is really much Finnish literary language and you dont hear that often in Finland. "Viiskytkaks" is more like language as it is commonly spoken.
Vladlen Gurovskii simply explained viisikymmentäkaksi=written language viiskytkaks=spoken language
That "Ei perkele" was definitely the best part of the video. You just can't get any more finnish than that.

The way you interacted with your child in Finnish was just so sweet and adorable. I think for a moment you forgot that you were filming, and I got the feeling that you were just genuinely enjoying speaking in Finnish and taking care of your child. Amazing job, Dave! You're doing very well considering you haven't been studying that much in total. Keep going strong!

@@tiito9814 Voisi vaikka vaihteeksi puhua vain suomea kaikissa videoissa, sillein haasteena. Vaikka ihan kuin suomi muka olisi haaste Davelle :D
It's so heartwarming to see Dave do dad things while forcing himself to speak in Finnish. At times you noticed he still hesitated to say something or finish the sentence he started, but still he gave it a try even though it ended up a little bit awkward in some cases. That's still a very big improvement compared to past attempts to talk in Finnish... To overcome that fear of using a language just because you don't want to make mistakes. And the forced rally English for "sauce" was hilarious, you nailed it Dave. This guy is truly on his way to master Finnish in the future.
Honestly your finnish isn't bad at all. You have definitely come a long way and i'm confinced that you will be able to master it some day just keep practicing.
Dude youre absolutly killin' it! Understood every word of it!
Finnish is a really difficult language and the fact that you have learned it in a pretty short time is amazing!!🔥🔥🔥

I love how you've learned to truncate words like a proper Finn. You didn't say "yksi, kaksi" you said "yks, kaks". Like seriously, almost no one in the damn country uses the proper forms when speaking in a normal situation :D
Jon Von Basslake yea that’s true, but for someone who is just beginning to learn to speak Finnish, I would recommend learning the formal ones because you will deffinetly be understood if you speak with them and no one will think you are weird or something if you use them. Every sane person gets that you’re just learning and it would be dumb to expect you to speak in the local accent or whatever (which btw differs from place to place inside Finland)
Outstanding development on your language skills! Keep it up Dave!
Im so proud of you dave keep up the good work
Ei mitään väliä vaikka tuli joitain virheitä :) Tärkeintä on, että yrität puhua suomea!

Amazing progress! This video is inspiring and gives me hope! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Couple of mistakes here and there but everything was understandable. Your accent is pretty damn good
i think this went great, especially when you consider the fact that you’ve been studying “properly” for only 2 months!! of course there were some minor hiccups here and there, but that happens when you’re learning a new language! i’d recommend studying more vocabulary, so that you can explain things better, although im sure you’re already working on it! this was extremely brave, and we’re all so proud of your progress so far. finnish is a hard language and even as a native speaker i find it confusing sometimes, lol..
I feel very inspired by these videos. Just seeing a person try things and having goals feels really empowering from the viewers experience as well.
Also, idea: In your edits you could perhaps translate them (like add subtitles or UA-cam's captions or whatever) whenever you speak english. That way you'd learn things that you'd say, because you literally said it.
You´re so good omg! your accent and everything.

Good to hear you speak Finnish so well, amazing improvement!
Awesome job, Dave!!!!!
Watching Cave Dad in daddy-mode, adorable.
I think when you find yourself naturally cursing in the language, I think that's one of those initiation situations marking you as part of a collective. My man, you are one of us.
Your Finnish is really good, especially your pronunciation!
There's two common words for bad in Finnish: "paha" and "huono". If you want to say your language skills are bad you use "huono", so you could say "puhun huonosti suomea" or just casually "sori, huono suomi". You don't really need this though, your Finnish is not huono! :D The word paha on the other hand literally means evil (good vs evil = hyvä vs paha), but is also used for example when saying something tastes or smells bad. Bad taste = "paha maku". Ofc there's many other uses as well so it might be tricky to know which one to use, but it's not really a big deal if you use the wrong one, people will still understand.
Hope this helped!
paha means more like evil
Also, it's also a bit tiered in some cases.
"Huono" is often the "less bad" option and "Paha" can be the "more bad" if thought as a scale.
But yeah, context usually defines which is the right one but other ain't "wrong" per se - it just flows a bit worse.
Kiitos, Dave! Oli hieno video. Puhut hyvin suomea ja äännät luontevasti. Kaikkea hyvää koko suloiselle perheellesi!
Me who basically started Learning Finnish 2 months ago... i just love how i basically could understand What he meant with the vocab i have, and the way he Speaks is kinda slower and yeah, this was just perfect for me, i love it
Honestly, for someone who's only been studying for such a short time, you seem to be doing extremely well. Your pronunciation is excellent. To me it sounds like your foreign accent mainly comes through in the "melody" of your speech, if that makes sense, but that should go away with time as you expose yourself to more Finnish.
also 10/10 perkele.
@Niko Pienet variaatiot konsonanteissa ja vokaaleissa on ihan ok natiivipuhujiltakin, mutta tosiaan tarkoitin vaan että ainakin mun korvaan huomattavin aksentti kuuluu puheen rytmissä ja äänenkorkeuden vaihteluissa, ja varsinkin noi korkeusvaihtelut on sellainen asia mikä on iso osa puhetta englannissa mutta verrattain aika olematonta suomessa.
