  • The vast Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake and supports a myriad of flora and fauna ecosystem. Over 40 million people are dependent on the lake for their livelihoods. This critical lake is however under threat from the persistent water hyacinth weed that has invaded large parts of it, bringing with it enormous challenges, as witnessed by Mr. Richard Ochieng, a resident of Kisumu, and founder of Centre for Innovation Science and Technology in Africa

An update in 2021 would be great. I hope they have been able to scale up production of the biofuel. Ingenious to take a problem weed and turn it into a eco friendly fuel to reduce emissions and reduce the need for firewood which leads to deforestation.

this is awesome ..the government has spent so much money trying to get rid of the hyacinth..maybe they could support this high school teacher who clearly knows how to turn this crisis into profit..hence preserving lake victoria and the fishermens lively hood.

There is serious money to me made here developing turnkey operations for use around the world. An amazingly talented man. And it is bio friendly also and because it is not a fossil fuel it is not polluting.

The Kenyan government should help this guy scale this operation, this is proof that not all biofuels require increasing farmland.
This fuel can be used to power vehicles as well.

Wow! This is so good to curb the issue of global warming and also water weeds. The only issue is that it will "Kill the economy" because of the oil cartels. I wish the process to be commercialized. It will save a lot of money.

Another viable option is to feed the chopped up water haycinth into biogas plants. The methane produced is a valuable bio fuel while the expelled sludge is a valuable bio fertilizer.

with petrol and diesel prices unstable Kenya could scale this up and secure domestic energy security to a certain degree at least? there are "total flex" engines already in production that can run on E100 i.e pure ethanol w/o the need to blend with petrol! Scania has a compression ignition aka diesel engine that runs on a fuel called ED95 which is 95% ethanol and 5% ignition improver....

Imagine if the government would offer incentives, that would encourage some Rich tycoons to invest in this ethanol production, instead of using 100 million to build a big flat which would only employ , 5 people,
A caretaker, two cleaners and two Watchmen one for day the other for night. 100 million employing 5 people is a loss in a developing country like kenya.
100 million invested in a project like this would employ, thousands directly and indirectly.
