    Thanks! That was very helpful. I'm new to surf fishing and have watched several of your videos on reel maintenance, which took some of the trepidation away about servicing the reels. Thanks again..

    Hi there I have an old quick 330n with a defective bail arm. I have checked the bail arm spring it is not broken and looks fine problem is when you try to engage the bail arm by turning the reel arm it doesnt turn over but if you press in the pin that keeps the bail arm in open position it snaps over sharply. Is there a mechanism in the reel that helps with the turn over when the handle is turned. Any help would be appreciated

      @2ndChanceTackle  2 роки тому

      Before you take anything apart, spray the area around the pin with penetrating oil. Give it a good spray and they work the pin in an out. That will usually free up the operation and allow the bail to trip. If that doesn't work, resend a note to me and we try other common issues - Dennis

    Just went back into your library and found this great drag washers maintenance video. One question, can I use Penn grease instead of the Cal's Universal drag grease? Thank you for the video.

      Yes you can. There is some difference, but no enough to worry about. Best wishes - Dennis

    You helped me with an old Tica a while back, now I got my older Daiwa bg600 that the drag just went out on. Is that reel fixable by following this video, and where/how do I find the correct upgraded drag washers?

    • @TheFrogfeeder
      @TheFrogfeeder 3 роки тому

      Actually, I just fixed the bg600, it has the Teflon washers and they were greasy, seems to be working now...
      So I decided to do my other big Daiwa, a b-400... the bottom washer on this stack is different than the other Teflon ones, it seems to be black rubber on one side and maybe felt or cork on the other? This reel is also all greasy in there so I washed that black washer in dawn dish soap, but now I can remember if it goes rubber side up or down?

      Yes - you should be able to get replacement washers through Smoothdrag.com

    Hi Dennis, I've just swapped out the drag washers on my Daiwa SS 700 for teflon washers for ultralight fishing. I've found some oil, probably from the spool shaft, got on the washers & the drag is a bit jerky, probably as a result. Is it possible to run the shaft dry of any lubrication or do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  2 роки тому

      You may want to remove the shaft and wipe it clean. Not much else you can do there - Dennis

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 роки тому +1

      You don't need to grease those washers. Overall, you can use the Penn precision reel grease for all moving parts and if you want to use it on the washers, just apply a light coating and then wipe it clear with a paper towel before reinstalling - Thanks for asking - Dennis

    Hi Dennis, I enjoy all your videos. By chance, do you have a D.A.M. Quick in the Finessa series, 110-550 in a future video?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  6 років тому

      Hi Chester. Funny you should ask. I just got a Finessa 101 and a D.A.M. Quick Super. I plan to do a video in the near future. I don't know much about them and right now, I need to learn how to take the handle off of the main gear. As soon as I learn that, I will do the videos. ( I have a question out to a friend that works on these. I believe there is a pin that needs to be removed from the gear shaft to remove the handle and push the gear shaft through the sleeve)
      Thanks for asking. With the future videos and I expect to get these done soon. - Dennis

      They are similar to working on the Penn 700 to 716 series. Main gear is connected to a worm pinion gear by a crosswind arm. One ball bearing. Extracting a roll pin to remove the handle and separating the main gear from the crank assembly is a big pain. A 3/32" punch is the ticket.

      THANK YOU CHESTER! I grabbed a punch and a hammer, Clenched my teeth and hit the pin - Success!. It is counterintuitive to anything you learn about mechanics. I guess sometimes you really do need to get a bigger hammer!. Look for the videos soon - Dennis

    What brand(s) of aftermarket drags do you suggest. Penn Slammer III. Merritt Island, Fl. Dusky 282 twin Suzuki 200hp.
    Thx!

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 роки тому

      The Slammer drag washers are high quality HT-100s. I am surprised that you are looking to upgrade these. The best alternative would be Carbontex washers if you want to try an alternative - Dennis

    2nd Chance, are the Penn 'fabric' washers a type of carbon fiber, or something more like denim?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  5 років тому

      Penn HT-100 drags are similar to the Carbontex washer. All of the newer Penn reels with these type of fabric washers are HT-100 and most of the replacement washers for the older reels are as well.
      Some Penn reels, like the Pursuit and Fierce spinning reels use a felt washer. Those are similar to cloth and can be upgraded to Carbontex if you find you are tearing them up. Thanks for asking

    If reel has corbontex drag do they need lube. Or if I upgrade to carbontex. If so what type lube for carbontex? Just subed

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 роки тому

      This is optional. You can use a light coat of grease, to you can run them dry. The manufacturer says either is OK - Thanks for asking - Dennis

      2nd Chance Tackle. Thank you I’ve been told never grease or oil carbon drags. Then I’ve been told you are suppose to oil them. Just seeking the correct answer.

    Can you upgrade the okumas to carbontex or only the Penns?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 роки тому

      You can upgrade almost all reel to the carbonated, regardless of manufacturer. The key is the diameters - inside and outside need to match. Also, the carbonated is thinner, so you may need an additional metal washer to take up the space - Dennis

    what oil do you recommend(not brand names), but on what basis should the oil be?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  4 роки тому

      I like synthetic reel oils. I use any of the manufacturer's brands as well as Reelx. I am not a chemist, so I trust that these have the right formulas to repel water, resist breaking down with saltwater exposure and last longer than general purpose machine oils. I hope that helps answer your question - Dennis

    Can I update any reel to Teflon washer?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 роки тому

      No, but you can usually upgrade most reels to a Carbontex washer, which is a better option than the teflon ones - Dennis
