Is there a limit on how much wind from the North you would be comfortable sailing across the Gulf Stream? I noticed you timed it with some north wind, what is a good recommendation for heading from Norfolk to Bermuda?
Hmmm not so sure about that one Andre. CMG is the track (course) you make across the ground, which is usually slightly different to the boat compass heading. What I meant by "sailing by the wind" is that the auto helm is programed to keep the boat orientated at a constant angle to the wind. I always have it this way when sailing well off the wind, to ensure that if the wind changes, their is no risk of an accidental gybe. The "normal" way to have the autohelm is either on a constant compass bearing, or to make a straight ground-track line to a destination or waypoint. Or maybe I missed your point? :)
In Canada, in 1992 I took CSP (Canadian Power Squadron) sailing & boating licence. The instructor told us that CMG is the compromise made between the actual best track angle and the leaway of the boat in reaching tacks, when it is often better to have a less than optimum tracking but a better ground speed, the extra distance allowing for better comfort, thus a better quality of travel.
Awesome sailing footage....What a great sailing window you guys had........Looks like you used 2 gallons of fuel...lol....The only thing I was hoping to hear was your communications with Bermuda Harbor Radio.......
Yes sadly we missed that on the video ... cant think why because it was (as expected) an epic radio conversation. Hi Mach. Yes, we have 2 fridges and a freezer running 24/7. They are 24vdc run from the yachts batteries. Compared to domestic appliances they are very low on energy consumption. But on the boat, these are higher biggest power takers we have because they are on all the time.
@@SailCloudyBay alright!, and the sources to keep them charged other than main engine or generator? Solar panels and wind generator? Do they produce enough power to keep fridges n freezer working while you go under sail for how long? Thanks for writing back SCB!
For battery recharge we have a big alternator on the main engine (150amps), the generator via 175amp chargers and 900watts of Solar. On anchor we can last for ever on solar .... if its sunny. We dont have wind gen. Too damned noisy. DOnt even like anchoring next to a yacht with one!
@@SailCloudyBay haha great!, thank you very much for writing back and sharing your knowledge Cloudy Bay! I lived aboard on a 56 ft cruiser, mainly docked and hooked to shore power and now I have plans to go back to the water, it will be on a sailboat this time, hopefully in the next 2 to 3 years from now, want to sail around and get experience but my main concern is about electrics and how to keep things running without running a generator all the time. Are there no provisions on that boat for water to drain off the deck? Looks like it pools quite a bit along the toe rails. No drains through there? Wouldn't think you'd want that water to pool there. Thank you for the videos.
Michael Coomer yes, Lots of deck drains there But when we push the boat hard ( bit too hard probably!) they don’t keep up with what comes over the bow. And yes, we were getting the damned drains blocked with pieces of Sargassum weed.
Yep .... we will do exactly as we like on our own boat in international waters where no rules apply. Thanks for your concern though. Oh, and please be careful crossing the road where you live.
We use the electric genoa winch to raise the sail. But to do fine tune tensioning with an electric winch would be asking to break something. Better to do it by hand and have that feel. I guess that’s why you don’t see electric winches on the mast.
You're right! Nobody absconded with your scuppers at all, they just aren't the big obvious ones I'm used too! The more I look at Cloudy Bay, the deeper my boat envy becomes! She's truly a sleek and lovely vessel! Fair winds and high adventures to you!
Great sailing all around! Beautiful boat and equally beautiful people! My only comment: perhaps it's because you want to keep the videos super photogenic, but not a sign of life jackets at any time? Really, at 8 knots? That's 250 m per minute - even the world-famous Tabarly was caught unaware - without a PDF, with tragic consequences - just my 2 cents worth.
That "stealth destroyer" is actually an "LPD" amphibious assault ship. Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, is currently building LPD 28 and 29 with a contract for 30 just funded. Beginning with LPD 17 and running through LPD 27, some were built at Ingalls and some were built at Avondale, Louisiana. How do I know this? I am the purchasing manager responsible for the procurement of raw materials including plate, sheet, structural steel, pipe, tubing, fittings, flanges, castings, fasteners, electrical components, and many other metal configurations. Ingalls currently has 13 ships under construction with six more DDG Arleigh Burke class destroyers added to the five we are building now. Our sister shipyard, Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA, builds aircraft carriers and submarines. Both shipyards are owned by Huntington Ingalls Industries.
beautiful boat and great videos! I'm interested in knowing more about the adjustable brackets/arms that you have on the side solar panels that allow you to adjust them depending on the angle of the sun.. do you happen to have any sourcing information for those?
Hi, They were custom made by a very creative stainless steel guy called Stuart, in Almerimar, Spain. the company name is Arcglow Inox. He also extended the pushpit hard railing to accommodate the panels. He also made the davit shoes, the bowsprit and modified our radar post when we changed from an open array radar (huge thing) to the Raymarine dome on the radar post. All at a fraction of the cost from normal marine sources.
Dang! Fancy new boats with no scuppers 'cause nobody wants to scrub the crud of the hull below them. What's this lazy world coming to? Great Passage!!! sdh T.A. "67 in CT ALL-A-TAUT-O
Yes .. could do with some bigger scuppers. But a bit of water on the side deck is just fine. And once she stops her ploughing through the waves it drains pretty quickly .... as long as weed hasnt blocked them! And correct .... we dont like dirty marks down the hull!
AH I see. No. The Bermuda triangle is between the Florida Keys, San Juan and Bermuda (of course!). We stayed pretty much outside that .... even on the way south from Bermuda. Thats why we are still here to tell our tales! :)
Wilf, we do wear them in bad conditions. But we don’t wear them generally. You won’t find many liveaboards wearing them. Yes, hope we dont regret it too!

You have no scuppers! She's a lovely boat, though!
There are scuppers - 3 on each side. But they dont keep up once the water comes thick and fast over the bow! All part of the enjoyment :)
Please hope you get back to sailing or posting.
Çok Güzel 😍👍
Wow thats quite a job you have. The fleet we saw was huge ... and those are only the ones in port!
Dick Dixon I actually served on a real boat USS RANGER CV-61 USN 89-95
How come there are no scuppers on your boat? How does that water drain off the side decks?
There are scuppers. 3 on each side. But they tend to not keep up with the on-deck water when really pushing into waves.
@@SailCloudyBay Best sailing videos on YT! Keep it up!
I live in Norfolk VA well Virginia Beach va
We sailed right passed you then :)
5 carriers ! Gave Xi a call.
beautiful boat and great videos!
All at a fraction of the cost from normal marine sources.
thanks for the info :) I sent a follow-up msg to your FB page..
When are you going to capsize I kept thinking.
9.5 tons of lead on the end of the keel says very likely never!
Bermda Triangle?
No, oh no no no. Are you kidding, We kept outside of it!
@@SailCloudyBay I was asking, is that where its at? Btw, love your videos.
AH I see. No. The Bermuda triangle is between the Florida Keys, San Juan and Bermuda (of course!). We stayed pretty much outside that .... even on the way south from Bermuda. Thats why we are still here to tell our tales! :)
do you have life vests ???? Hope you never regret NOT wearing them !!!
Wilf, we do wear them in bad conditions. But we don’t wear them generally. You won’t find many liveaboards wearing them. Yes, hope we dont regret it too!
Do you want to hear a secret?
Sails?
Yes Matthew? What about the sails?
what flag is that????
Kevin, it’s a Gibraltar ensign. That’s where the yacht is registered.
Nice video, but you should not film the plotter directly that much it can trigger epilepsy with all that flickering.
seriously?
then they shouldn't watch it, not Coudy's job to babysit others problems
@@SailCloudyBay yes seriously, I love your videos. And also the plotter thing, I have no issue with it myself, was just a friendly suggestion how to improve. :)
@@jacorin My God, stand down doggie. It was feedback, also its not like they said "hey now we gonna film the plotter directly for a few seconds and that divce have horrible refresh rate so it will make your entire monitor to flicker" so don't look.
Oh well. Have a good day
NICE, BUT , do you know how to trim a sail by hand ? try it for a change, that is sailing. anyway nice footage .... Thanks from a sailor
Wilf, yes of course we do. But why have a dog and do the barking yourself? :)
excellent scripting of the vid if this is scripted
No, not scripted .... all said as it comes. If we ever have to decide what exactly to say, we get all mixed up!
@@SailCloudyBay wow raw talent then
Not keen on the boastful accent and why was the life raft still covered/
Not sure what you mean by boastful accent. Maybe you don’t get our sense of humor. Yes, well spotted on the life raft. We normally do uncover it for voyages like this , but somehow it escaped us this time. That said it takes about 1 second to rip it off in emergency.
@@SailCloudyBay Just meant that beating smaller boats in an HR 54 is not that difficult. Regards
Smaller boats, bigger boats, motor boats, ships, fish .... they are all competition :)
I’m afraid it’s just the racing blood in us. Anyway, it’s more our humor than anything. We didn’t mean to offend anyone.
@@SailCloudyBay you can offend someone just by breathing, don't get too bothered by what others think or say
