Folks have so much dislike for the tank car but I'm grateful we got it. I agree it doesnt feel like they can do much more with it as there is only one in the world so id rather see it multiple times than not at all...
Awesome Jay Leno's garage diorama set you got, you open up, and you reviewed congrats.👍 I will be on the hunt for this set and I can't wait to add this set of my hot wheels collection.👍
Agreed, the hauler is definitely the focal point, too bad HW doesn't make an SLR casting like the one Stirling Moss drove in period, that's the car that was in the press photos of the Blue Wonder at unveiling.
Jay Leno actually owns a replica of the "Blaus Wunder" hauler to transport his own cars. Love how the front end of that hauler looks. Great set. Id actually buy this set to have a loose version of the Tank Car and keep my Jay Leno garage set carded.
I've actually stopped collecting these diorama sets, but this one I'll make an exception for. I can see Mattel getting a future usage out of this hauler in team transport paired with the gullwing.
Which should have been in this set instead of that hidious Tank Car .. Totaly agree with John about a 300 SL .. if you add a repeat do it good .. won't buy this set because of it !!
The last HW diorama I got was 25 bucks a year ago. Now they are 30. I bought this one today, but there were 3 others still sitting there on the shelf. Thats a lot of money for 4 castings and a box. I wasn't a fan of the hauler but I think now I am after this video. Those 300 SLs look amazing on the hauler. I wish they had come with the set too. I do like the Fords and the Tank is a nice looking casting even if its a repeat.
Yeah, period-wise either the Mille Miglia or the red 300 on the hauler. You probably are aware of it, but I have a Ford GT that's hard to beat. It's by Mini Gt. Red with gold stripes. Beautiful lights, wheels, and livery, PLUS black side view mirrors made of rubber,so they won't break off.
That Mercedes was used to transport the Mercedes SLR race cars from track to factory and back to track. As he said, they only made a few of them. I saw one at the Petersen and it is just stunning.
@tt-rs1457 they've obviously done multiple replicas - perhaps due to hindsight being 20/20 and all, I imagine that they wish that they had made multiples originally, or at least not scrapped their one-and-only. There are certain extinct American locomotives that I wish that someone would rebuild from scratch, assuming that they can find the plans....
I would like to see the hauler in team transport. If I’m thinking correctly Jay owns a replica of the hauler. I would display the red 300 sl on top of it.
So I picked this up, for the hauler only. I now have the Team Transport they should have released with the Blaues Wunder and the red 300SL. There were four or five on the shelf at the store, with probably a dozen more up on the top shelf.
While the I really like the 2 Fords, I really think they messed up on the car selection here (as usual); they should've ditched the tank car and kept the GT and Mustang for Car Culture (I'm sure there will be a 2nd edition of the Jay Leno set), and used other better and more varied cars which would've made this set far more desirable and the steep price more acceptable. Why and how Hot Wheels keeps failing so miserably in this department, is a question I wonder about all the time.
Mercedes made a new Blue wonder in 1993 an near exact carbon copy except for the horsepower of the original engine (192hp instead of 220) it sits in the Stuttgart museum with a 300SLR on its carrier.
Not sure how many will buy Jay Leno's Diorama set just for the "Blaues Wunder" model, maybe this will sell the set maybe not...The Hauler looks good though. Thanks for the preview.
The transporter is really nice, other than the Gullwing, the Aero Sculpt I think would really fit well on the transporter. Also the GTR and RX3 liveries look amazing
I feel like the hauler is gonna get an IWC livery. IWC, Hot Wheels, and Mercedes seem to have a good partnership going on, so I fully expect that hauler to get IWC branding in a Team Transport set in the future.
I’m definitely getting this set, the ford gt and mustang will go perfectly in my collection since I usually try to stay with stock/real versions these days
totally agree with your top choice, John - iconic hauler and MB to haul - plus, the HW dream team should catch themselves better curating/editing/graphics: correct spelling is 'Rennabteilung' [German for Racing Department], not 'Rennabtellung'
I'll be getting this. I want that hauler, mustang and the tank. The only car that I don't want is Tha Ford gt. But if it shows up in my country I will get it.
5:08 probably pretty simple answer for the Fords: existing toolings of cars he owns. Wouldn't surprise me if the design team has a list of his collection, and they picked and chose a couple they could easily do. Tank Car repeat, it's just an obvious choice to redo. Gotta get use out of the tool somehow.
The only let down here in my opinion is the tank car (and only because I own it from the Jay Lenos set released previously) At least we're getting 2 new additions of Jay Leno's garage + the hauler Just because they're not Nissans it doesn't make the cars in this set "bland"...
That set is coming to me today. I just took it because of the transporter. Although I have a version from Norev, which is much more detailed than Hot Wheels, but I also wanted this version.😁
Didn't that come with the matching car or was the car a separate? I can't remember off hand, but I do remember both and there were freaking sweet and I've been wanting to get them! Didn't Shucco make their version? I could be thinking of something else. I have been wanting to find either 2 or possibly 3 versions of the special GMC Autorama transporter like big bus/motor home-ish looking, was red, w/white and black trim and or accents and large pannels of polished aluminum down each side, they were HUGE mobile stage/showcases that the sides would open up, were wide at about maximum DOT road width . If i remember correctly, they were bigger than the old '55 greyhound busses. There were only 3-4 ever built and still had a little bit of the beautiful "art deco" and were very streamlined. They had duals on the front steer axle like a dually, and of course duals on the rear axle, the tires were specially made for them by either Firestone or B.F. Goodrich and had big classic white walls, sported spun/satin finished aluminum disc wheel covers. They were really futuristic showcased all of GMs automotive lines, safety features etc and quite a few of GMs prototype show cars like the "Y-Job" of Harley Erle's creations, the famous '53 Buick Century, Skylark, Special and the '53 Corvette along with some very well known futuristic vehicles that had the beginnings of the jet age. There was really cool innovations that toured the country from '48 till I think '54 or possibly '55. One was for state of the art appliances. There was an earlier set of 4-6 of the same idea that toured the nation and showcased technology of the day and what was coming tomorrow. They ran those till I believe late spring of '41 but stopped because of rising tensions going on overseas before we entered the war. In late 41. They too were a beautiful "art deco" styling of GMCs biggest, heaviest duty trucks that were specially customized, painted semi trucks of the day and hand built custom trailers that when hooked to the trucks were beautifully streamlined and looked like as if they flowed into 1 piece that had swept fenders that seamlessly flowed to a tail like at the back lower part of the trailer and the back of the wasn't strait as it had a little tapper towards the front. Of that set of trucks, trailers started in late '35 as new '36 trucks that were repainted, altered and updated with the next year's grills, modified super bright for the time with Cadillacs headlight assemblies and had Cadillac fog lights and had an extra set of headlights but were small but modified but bright every fall/winter till they stopped. The only pic I had ever seen of them, was the last version in a dark blue with gold, silver leaf letters and such. I would love to find those aswell! Ford had their own versions of theirs.
Maybe could use the Hauler portion of the box for a cell phone holder, gotta be a purpose other than destroying everything a collector would have in mind with this diorama, display wise?!
Eh, the history of that hauler doesn't do much for me. As much as I love the tank car I don't like repeats plus I already have good versions of the two Fords. Pass, still waiting on that Rally set though.
I can totally see that tank car getting robbed for its wheels for a custom. Besides, it needs something else for wheels to look more authentic. The rears on the real one are super singles and skinnier matching fronts. It would be really cool one to detail it, give it more realistic features rather than it being that hotwheels look.
Jay has one of the most unique collections in the world and there they put a mustang and a gt in this set. Quite a missed opportunity and disappointment :/
Lamley tell your friends at Mattel WE NEED MORE OF THE F&F Basicremiuns sets Series 2 and Series 3.... that hit literally NOWHERE

For reals bro none of series 2 and 3 warm pegs….

I foresee a Team Transporter grey Mercedes hauler with the ‘55 gullwing SL on the bed.
Mercedes made a new Blue wonder in 1993 an near exact carbon copy except for the horsepower of the original engine (192hp instead of 220) it sits in the Stuttgart museum with a 300SLR on its carrier.
These are an easy pass, thanks Lamley
I hope it does warm the shelve because I want to get my hands on a couple of haulers
Perfect pairing Mr. Lamely....!
I have had a Norev 1:64 version for years, but I just scored this set super cheap, so its one I want to see in person.
Either 300SL fits both as themed MB cars and the time period
And they literally fit this hauler too
Not sure how many will buy Jay Leno's Diorama set just for the "Blaues Wunder" model, maybe this will sell the set maybe not...The Hauler looks good though. Thanks for the preview.
I am absolutely certain that Mattel knows better than to keep casting the tank car, this has to be where they have put all their overstock...
The transporter is really nice, other than the Gullwing, the Aero Sculpt I think would really fit well on the transporter. Also the GTR and RX3 liveries look amazing
And from the new team transport sets I want the double decker set.
