I used to live in Whitehaven in the 1950's but sadly left 1960's..We used to live in Strand street, my dad worked at the water board (engineer) and me and my brother used to help him fill up the MARCHON TRADER and MARCHON VENTURER even in mid winter/stormy weather, We used to push a two wheeled barrow with all the big hoses up to the moorings , connect up then boarded the ship to have a nice feed in the galley while fresh water supply was filled up :) I loved Living in Whitehaven and used to go on short trips on some of the trawlers, When the Trawlers came back from fishing/trawling we would go and buy some strings of fish for a tanner each, i was always on the sea front and piers, my junior school was up on the tops just above the mine..think it was called Crosthwaite memorial school, Last time i was up there i went to see the old shool but someone had bought it and made it into their house/home, All my relatives lived in Cumberland..Cleator Moor, Egremont, Workington, Carlisle, and lots more towns/villages, We all wish we'd never left but my dad moved us away to live in a horrible place called Preston, Lancashire :( Many Thanks Mr. David Gladden for publishing this video it brought back Wonderful memories for me ;)
A nice video taking the time to show some of the lesser known areas that are sadly often overlooked by visitors and video users. The old (now grassy) route (21.00) used to transport the coal from the kells collieries down to the vessel loading hurries on the harbour, situated along where the Beacon now stands. It's a shame that more folk don't do this kind of thing, rather than all the usual maritime festival type stuff (also excellent).
