    Now that's a pile of brushes! What kind of brushes do you recommend?

      I don’t recommend any type of brushes - everyone has a personal preference. The ones I use are listed in the video description

    Thank you, David. This was very helpful! I kept looking at the painting behind you and hoped you'd show it to us and illustrate your points. Would love to see in this, or another painting how you varied shapes, edges, values, etc. Always love your videos!

    Thanks for watching "5 Ways to Make Your Paintings Better." Let me know if you have ever used any of these methods before. If not, what do you do to analyze your work to make it better?

      David M. Kessler Fine Art I have some art education. The work I do is figurative, usually focused only on value and shape. ( It will change). Practice, research and your videos help me to make my art better. The art world as business is new to me.

      To check values, I use my mobile camera and switch image to black and white. It helps.

    I tend to have only hard edges but it makes my paintings look a little "cartoon like".

    • @davidm.kesslerfineart1717
      @davidm.kesslerfineart1717  5 років тому +2

      Marc, varying your edge quality can really improve the look of your work. It’s something lots of artists overlook, or just don’t address, but I feel its very important. It helps the eye move more fully through the painting. All hard edges keep your eye from moving between the shapes. The eye has to hop around the painting rather than easily moving through.

      @@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 Agree. I need to blend edges of my portraits so the shapes look more soft and round, rather than harsh. It takes a lot of confidence to really soften an edge though.

      Marc Tonzillo its really important with portraits so the faces don’t look like cut outs.

    • @youmarc11
      @youmarc11 5 років тому

      @@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 Yes mine look a little cut out ish. Mostly because I paint the background and face at different times so its hard to blend the side of a face into a background softly. I don't know if you've seen my work.
