drum&bass and jungle were my gateway drugs to electronic music production back in 2005. back in those days studio samplers were powerful, but still big and clunky. but these days... these days you can have a 4 track sampler that is as big as a calculator.
I'm talking of course about the teenage engineering po33ko!
in this video, I show you my full beatmaking process, from the first idea to the final arrangement of all the patterns to form a full bona-fide jungle/drum&bass banger.
hope you enjoy it!

BIG UMAMI
I just got one of these. It’s my first foray into anything music related. Pretty overwhelming, but why you just did was one of the sickest things I have ever seen. I hope someday I can make something half as cool.
you're gonna make me blusssshhhhhhh!!!
Same here, only three years later.
Interested to see the path you take in next three years too!
Enjoy!!!
So how'd it turn out a year later?
Did you end up making something cool?
@@mcdoodle08 that's what I'm wondering
I can’t believe how good this sound on this little machine.
yeah it's great!
Thank you for using our Boss SP-303 style case
my man Pavel! thank you! hope you're doing ok. I get people asking bout the case every week 😂
I've been wanting to get a po-33 to start to get into making beats this video convinced me to get it bro. Keep chopping it up 🙏🏽
go for it! tell em big umami sent ya. eventually they'll give me a percentage ahah
@@BIGUMAMI gotchu dawg
Just got one last week mastered the thing in a couple of hours amazing little tools
I love that trick you used for the last bar of the drum break, Thanks for sharing!
yeah ngl it kinda started as a happy accident but then it sounded amazing and very much in touch with many dnb productions!
I just bought PO-133 based on your video 🙂 Very inspiring, thanks.
no problem! Teenage Engineering where's my 10% lollll
❤ dam, I love aphex. Wishing to get the skills to perform like that, love the result! I have a Roland JD xi and just ordered the op33
This is really really awesome! The rolls are sweet! Fantastic job!
thank you!
Damn man, sick beat ! Super glad i found your channel, seems like you’re doing amazing work
and right on cue, you find my channel and I go on a 3 month break lol! that ends today though! I'm back!
Really enjoy your music and your videos! Keep it up
thank you very much! will do!
glad I found this channel! you're super underrated. the po-33 is a crazy powerful sampler and I've been thinking about getting one to add to my ever growing collection of gear.
thank you so much! please spread the word! welcome aboard!
Dude! What an amazing video! A love letter to the amazing piece of gear that is the PO-33, so to say...wow👏
so glad you liked it! it means a lot coming from you especially!!
@@BIGUMAMI dude, I'm serious! It's the...no...THE perfect PO-33 video! It's entertaining and both the script and the editing are AMAZING! I'll link it in my next video description, if you don't mind!
I’ve been struggling to get the distinct shuffle feel in the drum break for a while on my OP-Z (finally nailed it). Super to see you bring that authentic sound; fantastic drums!
thank you!!! yeah it's all about finding the right old school breaks!
probably the best tech/music thing I ever bought for 100€
true. if only other TE products were this affordable lol
Great video. Makes me wanna pull out the KO again. Thanks for the limewire nostalgia too.
any time, my fellow internaut from the oughts!
tight. just bought one, im excited to get to it. Very sick beat you made.
thank you!
Great channel, dude. I'll be trying this tips tonight. Have a nice one
glad you enjoy it!!
That case!!
Really loved the pace of video and the metronome 'trick' is so handy.
I am super-new (and..not great) at the PO-33 still, but I am desperate to make some of my own DnB as well.
Thanks for the work here!
thank you for watching! if you want to get into dnb you might be interested in this tutorial as well ua-cam.com/video/TQcr7s2Ot_A/v-deo.html&lc=UgzRL_deUAPKudcC9TR4AaABAg and I've got another one coming up in a sec! cheers

One of the best KO tutorial on YT 👏👏👏
wow, thanks! that's probably not true but I'll take the compliment ahaha
well.. you've done inspired me to pull the PO out again.. lmao THANKS MAN! This was great!
thank YOU for watching my friend! got a new jungle inspired vid out in a sec...
Love the video, I’m an owner of the KO and Arcade. Jungle and DNB was the first music I loved before I got into DJing and Producing.
they're so good for such small devices uh?????
@@BIGUMAMI they are amazing, it always shocks people when I show what they can do.
nice work ! thumbs up
thank you!!
Brilliant! 😎👍
thank you jens!
the power of the computer has nothing to do with it. IT's the tone of the hardware
Made me seriously interested in buying one of these. Too bad I can't afford one rn. Gonna be checking out that sample pack though and putting it to good use.
definitely! they're so much fun. thanks for checking my sample pack!
Awesome! 👍
thank you!
I used reason a whole lot around 15 yrs ago and it was really great. I loved the ability to learn sequencing and a lot more about synth in general. I had before that only really been a stringed based musician.
It really opened up a whole world of production tools and sounds. I really want to get one of these things as they look like a whole lot of fun.
This piece of gear reminds me a an mpc2000 in the palm of your hand. I'm sure the mpc has more tools than this but the basic go to uses of early 2000's mpc's seem to be there.
Love your track too by the way.
man, reason was the bomb. I loved it back in the day! thank you!
Wow wow wow!
Nice video 🤜🤜🤜
Wicked🤘
The track is great ...first time hearing d&b on a p.o and sounds great likes its been done on a akie rack sampler or something.. definitely gonna have to try it my self
do it! I love the po33. even with all the sounds and synths at my disposal in my DAW, I still use it to get that dusty feel!
11:54 you can hold down write and change the volume of al the written samples all at ones! Dope beat keep it up!!
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
puoi farlo anche con pitch e risonanza mentre sei in play mode! (stavo scrivendo in inglese poi ho visto il tuo bandcamp. pezzi prefe: acqua e wow, that's a fast modem )
This a bangggggger
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💪🏽 BOSS!
thank you!!!!
By changing the sync mode you can actually start a metronome! Press write and BPM at the same time to do this.
that's a great shout!!!!
Epic
thank you!!!
Super
thanks!!
My po 33 can't come soon enough! Btw I also tried to produce dnb in the mid 2000's. Reason 2.5 and a cheap midi controller belted out some pretty basic tunes but the filth was in there. Anyway sick video will def refer back to it.
reason WAS THE SHIT back in the day, anytime I see that rack I get emotional to this day!
Amazing what the Pocket Operators can do in the hands of experts! Wish I'd picked up an S950 or S1100 when they were going cheap.
Would be interesting to see you program a Liven Lofi, they're not 'real' 12 bit, but sound nice and retro 👍
thank you so much!!! yeah I looked at it but got a digitakt for my birthday soo... can't really buy more gear right now ahah!
@@BIGUMAMI - nice, be careful with the Digitakt - it was my gateway drug into Elektron addiction!
@@leftmono1016 aw man, I'm afraid that started a loooong time ago, precisely in 2008 with a grey machinedrum... 😶🌫
@@BIGUMAMI - ooooh nice one 👍
I remember when S950, S1000 etc were selling for £50-£100 in secondhand electrical/pawn shops here in London, 10-15 years ago.
I wish I had the foresight...
Great video, thanks. Question, where did you get that protector for your PO-33?
mr pavel powers: instagram.com/pavelxpowers/
Good work. The trusty KO is excellent for Jungle. Only problem is that 170+ BPM chews up 16 pattern slots really fast. I usually half-tempo the sequencer to get more bars out of it but introduces its own challenges.
Anyways nice video. Sounds great too.
yeah that's true! the problem with half tempo though is that you'd lose the ability to play 16th notes, right? or am I getting confused?
@@BIGUMAMI Yeah that's the main problem. There are work arounds like using retrigs on the individual steps but what works to double high hats gets kind of goofy when you have to deal with the snares or kicks.
What I usually do is find a break that's tempo matched to the project and chop it into bigger chunks rather than only individual hits and arrange those chunks to the pattern.
yeah that mankes sense!
Man, this is fantastic. You don’t hear many people doing dnb on the po33. Also did your case. Where did you get it?
thanks man! hit up pavel powers on IG for the case.
Awesome video and sounds man! Where can I get that case for the PO33?
go check out my man pavel powers!
this was SICK bro. I’m gonna save for a po-33 because i have a po-20 rn and im doing pretty well i think but i wanna kinda extend my ability. i have a question, im new into the whole music thing. rn all i have is my po-20 and a pair of headphones. How could i record it to sound good instead if just taking a video of the po
Great video! Are any of those drums used the stock PO ones?
no they are not! I don't think anyone really uses those - the PO33's entire raison d'etre is to sample stuff! that's where you have the most fun and it's the most powerful!
Wow, can you really live record over a pattern chain, and it updates whichever pattern is playing at that part of the chain?
Awesome video, where did you get that case from though. Lol I need one, please link it
my man pavel's got you covered: instagram.com/pavelxpowers/
@@BIGUMAMI thanks man
Incredible work! I have the same PO-33, but actually doing something like in this video is much harder than I thought. I start thinking that it is a device for PROs. Can you advice something easier to start? Now I am looking for korg volca sampler.
thanks! to be honest, if you wanna make jungle/dnb, there is nothing easier than just using a computer. that's the most boring but most honest answer I can give you.
I find the volca sample the most intuitive of them all, but I wouldn't recommend it for jungle, because you can't easily slice drum breaks on it. you'll have to pre-slice them on a computer and load them up that way... or watch this video where I cover the topic: ua-cam.com/video/peIQY8BCIxs/v-deo.html
Junglist here, dreaming of a PO33 from day one... fortunately Koala does it :-)
man koala is the bomb, so powerful, you definitely don't need a po33 lol
How you get the drums chopped so perfect on there lol been tryna the whole copy to drum rack trick and still just cant seem to get it right lol
just sheer luck ahaha the knobs are so fiddly aren't they. that trick you mentioned is great but only works on perfectly cut, perfectly on grid type loops!
Hey! Great track!! Do you think that it’s worth to buy K.O II to have fun with jungle, dnb, low fi hip hop, dub? Cheers!!
I think it looks good for the price! not getting one anytime soon, but go for it!
Just to let you know that someone got the "them's the breaks" joke.
hey Big Umami, where did you get the case for your PO? thanks for the awesome video!
this dude: instagram.com/pavelxpowers/?img_index=1
Don’t forget about acidpro bro.
0:12. Aphex Twin. Selected Ambient Works 85-92. BEST ALBUM ALL TIME
that's go**amn right.
Awesome. What case is this?
look up my man pavel powers on IG!
Shout out to Octamed!!!
long gone days 😢
"13 to 16 middle eight section" 19:50 sound unpleasant to me (as if some tones were out of tune) / everything else is perfect!!! It sounds great!
_I'm no music expert, just my listening experience_
honestly didn't notice anything too whacky and out of tune, but yeah, no problem man
Is the Soul Pride break on the downloadable file? i cant find it
no, that would be copyright infringement aha! I ripped it off a wav file.
@@BIGUMAMI Gotcha :)
I connected it to some self-powered ones and it sounds very weak. I connected it to a sound card connected to a PC and you can't hear anything and I connected it to an electric guitar amp and it sounds weak and terribly bad. I don't know what to do now, I bought it for a small live performance and I don't know what I should do. If someone can help me I would appreciate it very much.
Have you tried turning the master volume all the way up? BPM + trigger n° 12
@@BIGUMAMI yes!
damn! must be a faulty unit my dude!
@@BIGUMAMI I think so. I'm going to order a replacement. Thanks for everything
@@BIGUMAMI I finally ordered a replacement and the new one works perfectly. Thank you.
Question: Can you connect pocket operator to computer (or recording device) and record your session? :)
yes! however you need an audio interface. look up audio interface on google!
@@BIGUMAMIthanks! I am talking about zoom h4n in this example. It has built in audio interface.
yeah that's perfect. that's what I use. you can connect it to your daw and select it as an audio interface!
@BIGUMAMI thanks! BTW my PO-33-ko just arrived! I've decided after seeing your video:)
@@janwilda8852 that's great!
Witch think break sample did u use
there are 4 of them in the song - I used the one with the vocals in it!
Is this on the album ????
unfortunately, no! this is just an impromptu jam.
Where did you get that case?
pavel powers
No love for E-MU samplers? 😆
Your 808 sound so suby
yes, cos unfortunately on the po33 basses distort like crazy, so I had to tame it with a Low Pass...
@@BIGUMAMI Yeah, you're right. That is why I was so surprised to hear so low bass
what's the song at 2:00?
lol, just realized it's one you made on the KO 😂🤦♂️
no, it's actually this one ua-cam.com/video/2k5HHz0eT7s/v-deo.html ! from my tomatobreaks album, please give it a spin!
@@BIGUMAMI i did! great stuff man! thus was an awesome video btw. Inspired me to finish up one of my tracks on the M8. So true how limitations bring out the best of you.
Hello,, i love jungle music,, and i love your vidéo,,,, maybe i m wrong but every Time i watch jungle artists vidéo,, they all use famous drum samples,,,, even if these drum samples are great, i m working to reproduce thèse rythms with drum machine,,,, is it impossible ? I think yes,,, but, it does not the same energy,,,, or ears are not made for this,,,, i really want to do it by myself !!!!! Maybe one day,,,,before world's end,,,,,!!! Thanks for your vidéo,,,, !!!
you can! you have to use actual drum libraries on a computer, like BFD or Native Instruments Kontakt Abbey Drums. you'll have to then process it with analog-like plugins, tape emulators, vinyl emulators etc to emulate the sound of real vintage drums.
it's extremely hard and you'll probably never recreate the same vibes - but you can get close to it.
I made a free drum library that recreates famous drum breaks using this method: www.bigumami.com/product/album/
@@BIGUMAMI Hello !!! Big thanks for your answer,, it s kind,, ok i m going to try it,,!!!! Many thanks,, bye
