- Join me as we discuss this classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon from 1991!
The Pirates of Dark Water was a short-lived animated project that was one of the most ambitious and expensive attempts at elevating cartoons.
I will walk you through the original mini-series event and discuss what happened to the series afterwards!

The Pirates of Dark Water was a really good show. I just wish it was not cancelled and left in a permanent cliffhanger.
Cliffhangers suck don't they?
@@Disneyfan82 You can say that again.
To this day, this is the *only* animated series I have ever been angry about *never* getting its proper ending. The crew found only *eight* of the 13 Treasures of Rule before the show got axed.
We live in an age of revivals & reboots and this just sits in the past! It is unfair!
Add to you're list the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo and we never saw the 13 ghost on the last 13th episode.
@@PutineluAlindidn’t a movie show that ghost
@@zoidboy1569 saw the movie and the great great grandfather of Vincent turned a new leaf, Flim Flam was hardly in it. Honestly they made weird movies that tried to red con themselves.
Pirates was such an underrated universe. I thought eco-fantasy was such an interesting thing. The Sega Genesis game was very enjoyable, too.
I was so captivated by the world and just imagining what else could be out there. I was always a sucker for good fantasy!
I remember watching this all the time when I was younger. Such a shame that they never got to finish the show properly. It was AWESOME! ❤
It lived as some half memory from my childhood and still holds up!
This cartoon and Swat Kats were the best. Both can actually be made into movies. Spielberg could easily pull it off. I'd pay triple to see it.
This really was a rare treasure that got cancelled too soon. I am so grateful that I got the DVD series in my collection 😁
I love this series! I first started off watching the miniseries but then went on to both watch and love the series as a whole. Fast forward and today I’m middle-aged but still live never forgotten this show and it will always hold a very special place in my heart and I’m forever saddened that it was never completed and never will be.
I know, it has always lived in a little corner of my brain. Who knows what could be in the future. Thanks for watching!
I remember this show. Loved it and as I got older appreciated how dark it can get.
Now THIS is the sort of cartoon they need to be making a live action of! We would watch even just to get closure on the ending!
Maybe someday... hopefully!
This was a great series, and the first series where finding out it was canceled truly upset me, because the story wasn't done!
Same! I just assumed I had missed it back then, and got sad when I learned it never actually finished...
Thank you for making this video. I remember watching this cartoon as a kid and I even had some of the action figures. Awesome memories!
I would have loved action figures for this! I had such a little mix of characters over the years.
Thanks for watching!
That show was so good. Underrated fer sure and I was so bummed that it got cancelled. The quality of the look though was so great! IT sucks how many shows were cancelled in the 80s and 90s. But thems were good times. THE BEST!
I love this carton!
This show deserves a one piece style netflix tv show
That could be extremely interesting
Omg yes, Netflix could finish it. Unless they Dragonball-Movie it!
Let's hope some Netflix producers read this.
I was tangentially aware of this from videogame magazine reviews WAY back when and the odd nostalgic "best hidden gem" lists and so on... but now I have finally semi-watched some of it! And I can see why it built the fanbase it did, a show this fresh and unexpected would probably hit home STRONG with a limited audience... who then proceeded not to be lucrative enough to see the true end :( But at least the show got to exist and inspire- sometimes that's what one has to settle for.
Top-notch animation plus a fun story is enough tbh. Thanks for watching!
Desperately in need of a reboot. Would fit perfectly in the vein of some recent animation like Kipo and She-Ra, with minimal changes (fewer catch phrases per minute would be nice, those were a bit much lol). I don't think it'd be too hard to round out the lore around the treasures to feel less "80's treasure hunt", while keeping a lot of the overall flavor and details.
Good point with the animation references, that could keep some of the original style in there while updating to modern tools.
I still like to sneak a "Noy Jitat" into real life when I need to watch my language lol
I have watched every episode and beat the SNES and Genesis version of POD and owned the 8 action figures plus the Wraith. Its always great to meet othet POD fans. #PiratesofDarkWaterforever
Amazing collection!!!
Thanks for watching!
I loved this as well, especially as how dark (pun semi-intended, lol!) it was for the early 90s; unfortunately, my local stations were still in the mindset of the looneytunes / tom and jerry style shows (i.e., mindless humor where every episode is standalone and you can show them in whatever order you want). I remember spending a time on Saturdays trying to figure out if a certain Dark Water episode came before or after the one the prior week. Good memories, lol, but frustrating.
I think the mystery helped it stick in my brain all these years lol
@@DrUrsa88 True, lol! I think that this would be an awesome homebrew or official D&D setting, I mean, it's got just about all the basic items from mystics, pirates, ancient lost civilization and magical relics with an attached compass-amulet. Give most of the base classes a variety of nautical-themed backgrounds to choose from, and there you go.
Good stuff brother 👏 💪 🙏 👌 🙌 👍
This and Exo Squad were the two best 90s cartoon series. And they both ended at a very disappointing season 1 cliffhanger.
Wow, this was a blast from the past. I'd almost forgotten about this show. I remember loving it, especially the non-Tolkienesque setting. Nothing wrong with Tolkien, but it's good to see some originality. I had a friend who made noi'jetat (sp?) a part of her vocabulary. I wonder if there are any episodes floating around on youtube...
It is such a good curse to throw out, sfw and everything lol
dude when this first in my country i though ugh it looks old but when i gave it a try it actually was decent
I work at a school and they have an action figure of that monkey bird thing. I never even knew what it was from
Go surprise someone with your new knowledge of Niddler!
Ok kids are you ready for this week's quiz on Pirates of Dark Water Episodes 1-5?
I liked that series
Me, 2 personally, *Captain Palsy!*
I really enjoyed this show when I was younger. It's a shame it never got the ending it deserved. I remember watching it as part of Children's BBC on BBC1
Really loved watching the series as a kid, took me to adulthood to find out it did not had a proper ending. Non the less I re-watched everything chronologically later as things tended to be randomly broadcasted when I was a kid :)
Same boat here. I thought I just missed the ending back in the day lol
Oh man I loved that show, I use to say Chongo-Longo all the time lol
They did great with their phrases and world building. Noy-Jitat works in a lot of places
@@DrUrsa88 ikr all the best shows either had a good art style, a snappy catch phrase or one hell of a good opening theme song and of course a good story
Loved the show, watched it with my cousins. I kinda ended up being Needler in play pretend (but I always related to Tula more, but would never tell ;)).
Ever since I watched it as a kid some 30 years ago, I was wondering how few games or other media l, if any at all, explored the power of ecomancy... The topic is nowadays more relevant than ever!
Would love to see some plot-heavy action rpg in a solarpunk setting based on/around ecomancy.
Where is my live action netflix series of my favorite show as a kid?
Sad it did not get more
Obviously yes, *Zoidboy 15.😞*
Loved this show! Miss it. Where can we find it now?
It may require you to channel your inner Bloth if you know what I mean
@@DrUrsa88 lol
What if they made a movie that wraps up the story? Granted, most of the VAs are now dead or retired, so they'll have to come up with new ones, but still it'd be interesting to see.
That could be a fun way to wrap things up!
@@DrUrsa88 indeed
An excellent series with an amazing world. Some of the character designs were ugly, but it was still an amazing ride!
omg you dont know how many years ive been searching this series. i dint remember the name but the memories of it plagued me. FINALLY TODAY someone was able to give me the name by description and found it. is there a way to download or watch the series? thx in advanced.
I found the episodes for free on Tubi I think, but it may require a little pirate spirit to really claim them lol.
Thanks for watching!
*NOI JI TAT!*
Can you buy it still somewhere?
I am not sure, I may have embraced the title a bit to get this footage lol
Why is this not a movie
Gritty live action reboot when?
This was the last Saturday morning cartoon that didn't advertise a toy.
it's all about the merchandising lol
