I used this on set this past weekend and it produced some crazy hum and noise floor. I couldn't even use the audio. I have no idea what happened. I was using 32 bit float, etc.
Great video. So nice to see fellow UA-camrs that believe in getting to the point! The irony of recording a distorted guitar to show how you can recover distorted audio is not lost either! Fantastic. I just ordered my F6. Keep up the great work!
@@OliverJHughes Looks like a golden strat -ish something back there on your wall. I get comments from time to time on a reissue thinline tele I have hanging in my studio that makes it into my videos from time to time. If you're ever in Atlanta, beers are on me. Well... cheap beers... from a can... in a paper bag... in a parking lot somewhere.
F6 just showed up. Good grief, it's tiny, like a toy. Like a tiny little toy. Without consulting the manual I was able to use it as an interface on my Macbook Pro. Logic Pro X seems to like it - 2.8ms output latency, and just under 7ms roundtrip! Preamps sound as good as any I've messed with. Look like my Presonus Quantum 2626 is going up for sale. It's good, but its only a smidge (sorry for the technical terms) faster and probably 10x the size/weight! Thanks again for the no-nonsense info rundown and the swell review. Rave on.
I went with the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II since the Zoom F6 was delayed last year. But yes... 32-bit Float is a lifesaver! I am a one-man video shooter and I usually leave the recorder plugged into a mixing board backstage. I will always do a sound-check... but it's one less thing I have to worry about in case something goes wrong. It's amazing to be able to adjust audio levels afterwards.
I've been really insecure just "setting and forgetting" since I'm so passionate about audio - but I forced myself to as a way to backup what I've said in this video and man... literally... it's amazing.
Watching the part with the “unclipable technology”, I have to quote Ryan Connolly from Film Riot when reviewing the Sony a7s “Holy sh*t, what sort of demon magic is this”!
Alright yep I think I blew mine out. Plugged into a DJ’s line out thru the speaker and all I hear is distorted loud audio, sounding like I blew something out..... Did you mention I have to change a setting in order to avoid that? Where is turning on ‘line level’ in the menu that you’re referring to in the video?
good beard, good review! no clipping. instant buy for me. always have to watch that aggressively on my zoom H2N. plus when you put the windscreen cover on the H2N the screen that shows when your clipping gets covered. I hate that, since I field record.
Great video. I share your enthusiasm and I haven't got one (yet.........) I have been researching Zooms H5 and H6. Although they are great machines, neither have 32 bit float which is clearly the way forward and that doesn't make them very future proof. I wonder who will be the first to get a handheld recorder with XLR inputs and 32 bit processing? - On that train of thought, if they can be retailed at around half the price of the F6, overnight all the current machines that don't have it will become Dinosaurs.
Very good video thank you. I was watching another video about the Zoom 6, and they said there is a problem with the line out being noisy with poor sound when connected to the Panasonic or Sony camera microphone input. Did you come across this also?
thanks for this. can i use the zoom f6 or the mixpre-3 ii with the rode video mic pro + via the 3.5 jack? are there limitations to this quality wise compared to using a xlr shotgun mic? thanks so much for your thoughts.
I can't speak to the mixpre3, but the F6 only has XLR inputs, so unless you had a 3.5mm to male XLR adapter, the Videomic wouldn't connect. As far as quality - hard to say, it's very dependent on the whole chain. I know you'll have more self-noise from a videomic vs a true shotgun mic that required 48v of phantom power, for example.
Thanks for the video. Does the “unclippability” and the other excellent recording functions work if the recorder was used just as a preamp? In other words, I would use it to as a through device into my multitrack recorder. Thank you.
Well that’s a bit tricky since the “clipped” signal sounds clipped in the recorder - because it technically is ... but the 32 bit float allows you to pull it back to clean in post. So if you were to record it to another recorder, and it clipped in that signal chain, you’d be stuck with the clipped signal.
Thank you for your response. I would be using the Line Out from the F6 into my multi-track recorder. Is the sound coming out clipped, or does the 32bit technology cause me only to hear the processed, unclipped, sound? I appreciate your help.
It will definitely sound clipped in the recorder if it’s redlining - but if you record it with the F6 you’ll be okay. Passing the clipped signal along will make it permanently clipped (I assume!)
Hi and thank you for the great review, i have a question that might blow everything out of proportion, I like to go to car audio competition shows naturally i like to record and share, here's where the problem arise, when am Recording a demo of a car the sound can be anywhere from 70db when talking to the car owner to give a description of his or her system to well more than 140db or even 157db when the bass hit in the demo, at this level pretty much everything i tried distorted beyond recovery, and anywhere i looked in UA-cam for similar videos recorded by so many different people one thing is always certain all the videos are distorted to hell, so i decided to try something completely out of the normal, am currently in possession of a audio technica bp4025 microphone, safe up to 145db with -10 DB attenuation pad switch, so if i used this microphone along with the zoom f6 will the distortion be a thing of the past or will i still have the same or similar problems Recording loud car sound systems? If this doesn't work what do you suggest please?? Many thanks

Thx man haha - the distorted guitar bit was lost on me while making this!

Glad to see you're back. Started watching you're channel and enjoying the contents in you're absence. Great Quality man!
Thank you! So appreciate it
Brilliant edit! Lovely content
Great video, thanks for the info. Putting this on my shopping list.

Haha amazing
The belt loops are for mounting in audio bags.
9:26 made me hit subscribe faster than any channel I’ve ever watched lmao
Awesome review Oliver, I learned so much! And 32 bit!!!!
Thanks man, glad to hear it!
It did help, and was very specific in the features thanks!
Just found your channel and this video is fantastic. Good job, keep it up.
Mixpre3ii also has 32bit float, a little bit more dynamic range, better headphone output. Zoom f6 has better batterylife, better app.
Thank you great explanation and review
Thank you, Oliver!!!
thank you. very useful
Great vids man!
I CAN´T WAIT FOR A 16 TRACK FOR MUSIC WHIT THIS TECNOLOGY
Damn! That looks like an amazing little piece of equipment! I've been using the zoom h6 but may need to update the gear haha
It's pretty dang good!
@@OliverJHughes totally agree
We got a review and you freaking ripped on the ol’ geetar. Thanks Oliver!!!
YESSIR!! Thanks for watching, brother.

Is this overkill for part time voice over work and a podcast each week?
Can you list reasons why F8N might be better before I get this one please? Just to be sure.

Great review! Just wondering since most if not all wireless Lav systems are 24bit, are we gaining any benefits?
Zoom F6 or the SD MixPre II 3? Nice video!
so helpful thanks!!
Wow. Have had a few recordings recently that have taken a lot more work than they should have. This sounds like a life/ass saver lol
Huge life/ass saver!
5:29 lol I see that belly shot
zoom f6 it's not compatible with Mojave sistem? because my mac don't find it
Would you use this for live podcasting during a video live stream?
Very good video thank you. I was watching another video about the Zoom 6, and they said there is a problem with the line out being noisy with poor sound when connected to the Panasonic or Sony camera microphone input. Did you come across this also?
Zoom said they solved a line out noise issue with firmware 1.5.
I do know own the F6 (Wish I did) so I’m not able to test it.
because those aren't just for belts those are for bags
see orca bags for f6 garter clips
