At first glance you'd think that this guitar is a great beginner level guitar and you're right. Yes it's set up near perfect out of the box and it comes with a practice amp, a tuner, extra strings, a guitar strap, picks and pretty much everything a beginner would need to get started with.
But... After you pick it up and play it you'll see, like I did that it's actually much more than a beginner level guitar. So if your an intermediate or a pro player this guitar is definitely worth taking a look at.

Got the Firefly HSS Classic, 2 point trem, alnico pickups, amazing neck. Pulled the plated brass cover off the humbucker, screwed on a nickel silver ground plate, wired in a push-push coil split on the bridge tone pot. Its a hot bridge pickup so the single coil measures less than 7K, perfect. Wired it so its humbucking when the pot pops up, and a funky SSS au naturel. Shell pink, rosewood fingerboard, got a tortie pickguard, beautiful

i have this guitar but the neck is swapped with a fender neck rather than using the factory donner neck. it is my go to guitar, absolutely phenomenal to play and almost zero complaints

Excellent review. The specs say that it even has rolled fret edges? That's just amazing.
1.5 mm on the 17th fret? Am I reading that right? And no buzzing? That's $600 at least, and even then...
9K is p90 territory. And that's an interesting thing because now you have a 500k pot and a 9K resistance in your pickup. Typically you don't find 500k pots on regular vintage single cars, because they're too bright. And then when you use HSS it's always going to be a problem.
One solution is to simply line the pickups more to around 9k which is usually too dark - but then you brighten it up for the 500k pot.

Hi 👋 and thanks for watching. I can honestly say that after doing a few mods & a great setup to this guitar It's still in my top 5 favorite playing guitars.
Is it good for a beginner? Sure, but keep in mind that almost any guitar you buy will need a good setup, maybe a nut change. It will definitely new strings.
As to all the features it has, for a brand new guitar player, you simply won't need them for a while. But bang for your buck, it's a great buy.
Your mileage may vary, that only you'll know after you own it
@@dennyps1 would it be better if I purchased one from a guitar store? It would cost me more money, but the guitars they sell they make sure are set up properly before it walks out the door. It would run me about $150 more.
@cweber9112 Okay, maybe in your store, that's the case, but certainly not all guitar/music stores do a complete setup on their sold or even display guitar's, in fact most don't even change the strings, they are just required to make it reasonably playable. If you've got a guitar & store that does good setups in mind, that's great. Considering that the Donner i received needed very little in the way of setup, it'soverall a great deal (I'm a pro so my wants and needs will be very different than what a new guitar player actually needs to get started).
Most setups in my town Portland metro area run between $50 & $75 . So, assuming the guitar didn't need anything major, you'd be ahead in the $ department
I bought this guitar it'll be here Monday. Haters gonna hate. But for 150 I'll take a chance. Besides I can do my own setups and even if I had to pay for it at 150 plus 100 for a setup. Good deal. Really good deal. This guitar is full thickness and 22 frets, rolled fingerbored the pickups sound fine to me just as good as any cheap guitar I've ever heard and better than most Imo. Plus a push pull split humbucker? Really? I don't care at all about the amp and you did the right thing by not using it. It's not going to do any guitar justice. If it tunes up nice and intonates I'll keep it. Got my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the review. It doesn't hold tuning from other reviews from using the whammy bar. Its a good starter guitar. Yamaha ERG121 is much better.
ANY guitar with a traditional non-locking tremolo can and will go out of tune. Best defense is a proper setup with someone who knows their way around a guitar with a trem.
Simply not true setting up a floating term is not rocket science but it does take experience & know how, I've done it many times with great success.
I want one.

If i needed to change the pick guard on one of these, would a normal strat one fit do you think?
The pickguard is a 12 screw one modeled after the 1 year in the 60s when Fender did it. I believe the dimensions are close (although I have not measured mine) but you would likely end up drilling an extra hole on the more commonly used 11 hole pickguards available everywhere. By all means check the monoprice website for actual dimensions

It's not too terrible to put a pickguard on a guitar that doesn't quite fit. You fill up the holes with toothpicks and Elmer's. If it's a soft wood you just get a punch or perhaps a small drill bit to start the screws. If you're a master luthier you get the exact right drill bit and drill down exactly - But I never did this since I figured if the screws strips after a time you could just fill them up with the glue and toothpicks and start over.
what strings would you recommend putting on these for an absolute beginner
Hi J.J. 👋 depends on what kind of guitar 🎸. Acoustic or electric? Since your comments are on this video I'll comment for an electric. Start with Ernie Ball super slinky 9-42. These strings are easier to press down on the fretboard individually and in chords and should you start doing a bit of lead they are easy to stretch as well

@J. J. Then you can't go wrong to start with, with the Ernie Ball 9-42. They are light and slinky, sound great and are easy on your fingers
@@dennyps1 I just learned that this guitar comes with 9-46. if I switch to 9-42 will it effect the neck bow?
@J. J. no, they won't cause neck bow. I actually left the factory strings on for a couple weeks (normally, I change them almost immediately). They are not awful, but most manufacturers put on cheap strings that they buy in bulk. So you decide 🤔
One note, though, clean them often with something like Dunlop 65 string cleaner, in addition throughly clean and condition the frets and fretboard.

I was pleasantly surprised also. I bought the dst-152 light blue. Lowered the string to .060 mm. The first tune was tricky, 6th and 5th hanging up on the nut. After a few days that went away. After the quitar acumented to my house temp and humidity this thing sound even better.
I hear you and that's a good strategy. Mine not only has a great action (medium low) but I got the whammy set up to float and this guitar is a beast, I just love the way the stock pickups sound.
How much does it weigh?

Okay, point taken, Charles. But in all honesty, their little amp will not inspire much in the way of creativity, and that's why.
We get into electric guitar playing to be inspired by the look, feel & sound of our guitars. The guitar itself is in a class way above its price point. The amp is cheap and, in my opinion, will not help you other than make noise, which will not inspire you're playing.
@@dennyps1 i mean i personally disagree i mean as a new learner i actually feel more daunted by the amps than the guitar so I'm going to quite enjoy the amp it comes with
Oh sure, nothing wrong with jamming and learning with it. It's lightweight and rechargeable. Good for a bit of practice as well.

The little Amp will make all guitars sound worse than a bigger better Amp. The small Amp could actually ruin the guitar review itself. I better Amp will make the guitar sound true and more accurate
I agree, and frankly, most of us want to hear the potential of a guitar's sound versus on a cheap amp that you'll never use to perform with
Big gap where they never filled in the fret slot cut + a lot of filling on the others.
Fret ends/ fretboard wood don't look very good. Infact they look terrible.
Trem springs auta be straight not v shape. That middle spring aint doing nothing.
You didn't use the tremolo ?.

Bummer for you, I had much better luck. Although everything you mentioned is fairly easy to fix but still a bummer.
I did have to float the tremolo after a few minor setup things action the way I like it ECT
Other reviewers don't play the same damn riff, over and over again, all while turning the Tone knob halfway down... Because.... It bores people to tears, plus, guitar players generally KNOW exactly what Tone knobs do and don't need to have it illustrated to them like they are 3 year olds... Other than that little tidbit. Nice review.
