So happy to find vlog about my dream job😍☺️
I’m so glad you found my channel! Thank you for the support 🥰
DO IT! This field is just starting...with new technology and the shortage its like..the best kept secret
@@ryanroderick7741 Its hard to study for it though
So happy that this is your dream job. :)
@@ryanroderick7741 thats kinda sus
I'm hoping to get into a CLS program this year. I work in a blood bank reference lab as a lab tech right now and seeing all the others machines and tests you run in the hospital is super cool and gets me more excited to pursue this career! Glad to have found this channel!
That’s awesome! I love blood bank! Best of luck on your journey and thank you for your kind words 🙂
I really wanna to get into a CLS program but I don't know how, I live in San Antonio Texas, I need help plz
@@mayyousif1365 hi were you able to get into the CLS program!
Just got accepted to my CLS program! I am so excited to do this kind of stuff!!
How exciting! Best of luck in your program and make sure to always study! 🤗
Me too!
@@123lolarox how did your program go? :)
That blood bank machine is a DREAM. We have to do the tube method, which isnt terrible just takes forever!
I love the machine. I don’t mind doing it in to if I have to but I agree if you have a lot of samples it does get a little bit overwhelming.
I got admitted to the professional portion of the medical laboratory science program at a local university for Fall 2021. I’m so excited for it to begin. The school is from Fall 2021 until summer 2022 and then there’s an externship from August until December 2022. Then I will graduate as a medical laboratory scientist 👩🔬
That is awesome! Congratulations! Make sure to study, study, study!!
Our profession deserves more praise
Yes I agree 🥺
So true 👍 👌
Chemistry is my favorite! Going for specialist! ...I LOVED teaching it! I did night shift too but we did 5 on 6 off
this looks so cool, i know what i'm pursuing now
Good luck on your journey 🎉
So happy find your channel 🤩! I’m a Laboratory Medicine student 💕
That’s awesome good luck on your journey and thanks for finding my channel! 🤗
You were so funny when you were cooking lol I love watching your videos girl! Keep em coming
Haha thanks lex! I miss you too 😭♥️
so glad to see a clog about my field of work. lol it so funny how all techs Have a machine they hate and say it sucks
lol yes some machines are better than others. What area of the lab do you work in?
I'm 30 years old , I want to study it but I may be too old to start this career
No you are never too old :)
I started this program when I was 34. You’re younger than me, so don’t worry about the age. Just do everything you like, never too late 🤗
Nonsense, you're young as fuck. I've seen WAY older people at college, like people in their 60s and 50s.
I’m 32 years old and just got into this major, you are never too old to do what’s going to make you happy. Just do it!
@@moraless5 Exactly! TALK TO EM, STEPHANIE! LET EM KNOW!
most of the machine we also have in our lab so im familiar to it
That’s nice
Heeyyyy, seeing some common instruments between your lab and mine! Hiya from an MLS generalist in Ohio
Hey hey! Wow that's pretty cool!
I worked hard to get my MT degree and graduated in 2005. I have worked 3rd shift since then. I moved into a high complexity FISH molecular laboratory about 6 years ago. Unfortunately, last year in the state of TN where I work, bills were passed to give these laboratory jobs to unlicensed people. Many medical technologists have been forced into offices to work analysis jobs in front of a computer. That is not what I signed up for unfortunately and I may have to move into the travel tech job world to find the 'wetlab' jobs that I desire.
I'm sorry to hear that. Are you seriously considering travel tech?
I used to work as a MA and the only thing I liked about it was working in the lab 🤣
Going back to school now to do my MLS stuff!
I am currently trying to get into my school's MLS program, hopefully I get in. I hope I enjoy this, I actually like my labs, what I hate right now is Organic Chemistry, I am barely passing that class with a C, makes me feel dumb sometimes, and I don't know if my MLS classes will be harder😭.
I’m in exactly the same boat 😭
Its probably different for everyone but im currently in a MLS Program and the classes are so much easier for me than the other classes that I took beforehand.
Hi Jonathan thanks for reaching out! I was in the same exact place that you were I actually got a C in organic chemistry as well. I was able to get into my program regardless of that. I’m actually putting out a video that talks about the classes I took to get into the program and I’ll be uploading that by later tonight or early tomorrow morning. You can definitely do it and don’t let your grades discourage you too much. Just make sure you write a good statement when you apply to the program.
I definitely do feel like the classes in the MLS program or easier than the pre-requisite courses. There were still some challenging ones for me that’s for sure but overall they want you to succeed and do well.
I live in CA and the one of the requirements for the CLS program is at least a GPA greater than 3.00. I got in with a GPA of 3.25 and a good handful of Cs in my science classes. They don't expect perfection, but resiliency. So as long as you show all together that you are capable of working hard and are well rounded in other areas of your life then you should be fine
I want to know what it takes to become a Medical Laboratory Scientist!
Hello, I have a video up on my channel that speaks about this :)
i don't know how do you get permission to shoot in lab we are not allowed to take camra or phone
HR and lab manager
Rosa, lovely video! Could you please offer some advice? I’m a junior studying biochemistry and biotechnology. After I graduate, I want to do the year program to get my Medical Laboratory Scientist License. How did you support yourself while getting your license? Thank you
Can you please do a video about what kind of questions you got asked during your admissions interview into the program
yes, I really like this question thank you for the idea
I’ll be graduating & starting my preceptorship in may 🙌🏻
That’s awesome congratulations!!!
This is so interesting 🤓 love all the terminology even though I have no idea what half of it means 😩🤣 I came across your channel not too long ago as I’m really interested in becoming a MLS or MLT, I have an orientation I’m going to attend this Thursday at my local college for this program and not going to lie this video somehow got me more excited 🤓👩🔬 seems so chill but super cool
If you follow this career path you’ll learn all of it don’t worry :) Good luck at the orientation make sure to ask as many questions as you can. The program may seem intimidating but honestly it’s not too bad you just have to learn to time manage and study as much as you can. Thank you for checking out my channel and thanks for adding me on Instagram you seem very sweet and cool and I wish I could get my hair done by you but I don’t live in Florida 😭❤️ you have amazing work! 🤗
@@RosaPerez aw thank you so much for responding with your kind words and words of encouragement!! :) You are incredibly sweet and i wish you nothing but ten folds of more success for you future and some day maybe i could do ur hair haha! Thanks again and i will ask as many questions as possible xx :)
do you think you are paid fairly for your work? do you feel overworked/under appreciated
I feel like we should make more. I work in research now and the pay is slightly better. It still should be higher though. I do feel slightly overworked as the majority in this field do but thats for all medical workers. I feel appreciated at my workplace which makes up for it slightly.
Great content! May I ask what kind of lab you work in? Also which types of labs do you recommend for people looking to do different things? I’ve heard each lab is different.
Hi there! I work at an oncology research laboratory 🥼 I say if you want a lot of exposure to work as a generalist first. You can work in many different settings such as hospital, reference, and research. The hospital will have the most variety I would say :)
I want to become a med lab tech and then an MLS 💖 Edit: How is work life balance as an MLT/MLS? Would you say you are able to have some time off to get away? And oh wow, I just noticed you are wearing acrylics!! Does your lab allow fake nails?
Hi there! Work life balance, like any medical field, is difficult to find without you proactively taking your time off given. Especially now in a pandemic - and MLT/MLS is notorious for being short staffed. Not to try to scare you, but rather keep your eyes open to your mental health and take the time you earn off. Try to avoid burnout...
Been an MLS since 2022. I can confirm that work life balance has been rough for this field, and I'm currently looking into going part time for a season to hopefully avoid burnout.
My lab has a high turnover rate too :/
What does your schedule look like?
Heyy tell us your story from high school to this job? Interested to hear.🤣
I have a video on my channel about it
Dream job❤
Very exciting you can do it! 😇
i can’t wait till i become one omgg!
Where are you in that goal of yours?
Do you normally work alone or are you working with a small team of people? I’ve been looking into this career, but I definitely don’t want to be basically by myself all the time.
Both! If you work at a slightly larger lab you will not be working alone :)
@@RosaPerez thank you!
@@Imthat_maddie You're welcome :)
So happy because I am a MLT and I am going on job😘
That’s great!
Hi there, thanks for the video and the extent that you overviewed the laboratory technology! I was wondering how the night shift affects you in the long run. I know this is like a year later, but have you noticed any bad effects since working nights? Thanks!
I worked night shift for about a year when I first graduated. It really took a toll on my social life outside of work because I was always dead tired during the day when normal people could hang out. If you don't have a life outside of work, then it works out just fine
I can definitely make a video regarding my experience working night shift in the laboratory! I think that's a great Idea. I will make a video that goes into detail about all the questions you asked :)
I completely agree with what you said! I will talk more about my experience in a video as well!
Hi Rosa, really like this vlog! I have a question not sure if you have answered it before and sorry if you have. What do you think about the lab being automated in the future and the job outlook for those who will graduate in 2-3 years? Thank you
Hi kaylie! Thank you I really appreciate it! I don’t think the lab will be completely automated in our lifetime. It has already been very automated but there still is a need for people because there’s always errors with machines or people to need it to fix issues that arise. There will be numerous jobs in the next I say 10+ years as there are always openings in the laboratory. Many people are retiring and there is an increase need to fill these positions.
since you work night shift, what times do u usually eat or see family? i learned tht most people who just graduated tend to be given the night shifts and was wondering how that would work as a lifestyle
I no longer work night shift I actually work dayshift now. But when I was working a shift I would sleep right away when I got home and I would spend evenings with family and friends.
Kinda want to quit my PhD and try this instead. But I would need four classes before I could apply to be trained.
I say finish off your PhD and if you’re still interested go for it!
im looking into this as I am currently mastering in biomedical sciences and graduate next year. I've always been interested in blood/diagnostics/patient samples. How do I go about becoming a medical lab scientist? is there a way to get in contact with you? having trouble finding related info online :/
I've been thinking about making a channel about being an MLS but I definitely couldn't film anything at work. Too scared of accidentally violating HIPAA 😂
You should make a channel :)
Chicago represent! Thanks for the video, very informative
Windy City!!
You’re welcome:)
I love you i lke your job i hope me became liike your job🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Night shift CLS here! I love nights…QC then chill haha 😂
Night shift was great 😊
kindly make video on how different tests are performed
That’s a great video idea thank you
what major/program does someone need to take if they’re interested in this field? what are the requirements for this degree? (does it need master or phd) and is it important for someone to have strong math background? I love science and I’m good at it but math is killing me 🤕
You don't need math per se if you end up doing a BS in MLS. I, on the other hand, started with a BS in Biochemistry 4+1 years to get my MLS degree and certification. I wanted to have a lot of opportunities that's why I chose biochem. MLS by itself doesn't get you further than med labs. With biochemistry you can specialize later in toxicity, forensic chemistry, biotechnology, etc etc. The downside for you could be the fact that it has a lot of math, less than physics more than any biology degree.
Cal 1 2, differential equations, linear algebra 1 2, physics 1 and 2 physical chemistry 1 2 3 etc.
Check your state requirements. In CA you need a degree and certification to be a CLS.
Can you make a video on how was the interview job searching process for CLS? Thank you! ☺️
Yes I would like to! Thanks for the idea
hi Rosa, i just passed the ASCPi, but my laboratory experience was last 1996, i dont know how to start again, is there a program that can teach us how to start all over again? tnx
If you passed the ASCPi you should be able to still get a job. I don't think that should be an issue as many labs need people as there is huge staffing shortages.
NWM worker here as well. I’m thinking of going back school for MLS..would like to ask you some
Questions regarding this line of work!
What do you do there? And what are your questions?
When you are a medical laboratory technician student are clinicals really 40 hour weeks ?
Not for me for me it was about 24 hours a week. It does depend on the program but I wasn’t clinicals for the full nine months.
Hello! I am currently doing clinical rotations during my senior year in the MLS program. For my program, we do have 40 hours of clinical per week. 8 hours a day, and 5 times a week. They started in November and go until June. It seems like a lot when you have to account for the assignments and weekly quizzes we take on top of that, but the experience is wonderful.
@@miyaslobodyanyuk I am a senior student, currently in my 3rd year of study. We do half semester (3 months), 24 hrs a week clinicals, and next year, in my final year of study I'll be doing clinicals the whole year to choose a specialty (elective year) in fields ranging from Medical Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, Haematology, Immunohaematology, Clinical Chemistry, Cytology, Histology, Clinical Pathology, or Cytogenetics. So I think Clinical hours depend mostly on the University/College that you attend and the year of study. I just have a question for @Rosa Perez, how do I become a generalist in MLS? Do I not choose an specialty in my final year of study?
Do you know if it's possible to secure a job as a medical lab technician with just a bachelor's degree in biology (minor in chemistry)? Currently a high school biology teacher being considered for a position.
Love your vlog boo
Thank you I really appreciate it 🥰
hello, i'm an undergraduate student in general biology. will it be difficult for me to take this major for graduate program?🥺
I don’t believe so. I’m sure you already have a strong science background basically you’re taking a lot of classes to supplement what you’ve already learned. You’ll be taking bio chemistry, immunology... etc the list goes on! Have you already looked into programs you’re interested in?
How much Chemistry do you need to know as a CLS? I really want to pursue CLS however I struggled with Chem in undergrad. Gen Chem, orgo chem, clinical Chem… I passed but it took a TON of studying and I’m worried CLS may not be the route for me since it’s not my favorite.
I say, if you’re uncertain about the route, you should not pursue it. I struggled in chemistry as well, but I did not find that. I needed to much of it while working in the laboratory. I say you should definitely go after a career you’re very passionate about and maybe take some time to search within yourself to see what would be the best fit for you. In reality once you think about it, you can always switch careers but you definitely want to do something that is more fulfilling in your life.
Everything requires work, even if you go into another field. Nothing is easy in my opinion.
You made a great point! Everything is work, but you should find something you’re more passionate about and work from there! Regardless everything is difficult, but if you at least have a passion for it, it makes it more enjoyable.
❤❤❤❤
😇
can you explain your educational journey? where should i begin? how should i begin to go out doing things?
Yes, I have a video on my channel that talks about the classes I took during my four years of college
Awesome video. I'm about to go back to school, and I want to do this as my career.
You can do it!
I didn't know you work graveyard! I know there are many labs that close by the evening so we have that option.
Yes I worked that shift and are you in California?
How do medical laboratory technicians communicate with doctors, nurses etc ? Is it face to face or over the phone ?
Both are effective forms of communication :) it does depend on where you work. If you work at a smaller facility it’s probably easier to go and ask questions than a larger one.
Very good work
Thanks!
My dreaming job
🤗
Hi Rosa. I will be entering USA through a spousal visa. I am a CLS too but I have no experience....will it be hard for me to find a job in Nevada?
Hello! Are you saying that you do not have experience in the United States working as a CLS? I am honestly not too sure you may have to start a different type of position before work as a CLS again. I’m not sure what country are from but that is something you would have to do more research on the jobs in Nevada.
@@RosaPerez thanks for the response Rosa. I am saying, I dont have any work experience as a CLS in the Philippines. Since the pay was a bit better as an ESL teacher, I became an ESL teacher after graduation.
@@janadumandan248 OK I understand now thank you for clarifying that. You may have to start off as a laboratory assistant and you might be able to work your way up that way since you haven’t had any experience working as a CLS previously. It would be a good idea to look at jobs that are posted online kind of see what they require as well and maybe talking to someone in the laboratoryas the laboratory manager. I hope this is helpful to you.
@@RosaPerez Thanks again for the response Rosa...your vlogs are very helpful.I'm the type who easily gets worried..so its nice to know what I might be getting myself into...
Hi Rose,
Thanks for making videos. Please give me some useful topics for ASCPI MLS exam.Scheduled on 12th of Apr next mo
Hello, I do not know much details about the ASCPI my apologies.
Omg! I just love your vedios❤️👍🏾
Aw thank you!
Do they train you when they hire you or you just learn all this device by ur self please?
We get trained while on the job. There is some background knowledge that you should already have from school but for the most part you do get a chance to relearn everything until you feel comfortable to work on your own.
Me too same dream
Keep going 💪✨👌
All the best!
I’m sure you have answered this but I just came across your channel haha. What made you pursue this path instead of pharmacy? I’m going to school for pharmacy but this looks really cool.
While working in the pharmacy, the pharmacists I would work with told me they wish they pursued something else. Little support from corporate. Saturation in the job market. Those are just a few reasons but I'm very happy I chose a different path as I am a physician assistant student now. In the future it will give me the opportunity to work with patients directly to diagnose and treat them. I also like the flexibility to switch specialties and I do not feel tied down to just one. I know I am replying years later so I would love to know how pharmacy school went/is going and if you were able to secure a job. Best of luck :)
It was amazing
Aw thank you! So sweet 🥰
Is medical scientist and medical labrotaory scientist are same???
Yes
Do you make good money as a MLS? I wanted to do this long time ago, currently working as a pharmacy tech here in Chicago for 3 yrs approx making $40,000 yearly and with that study will go up around $5000 more which I don't see is a lot very confused...
It’s more than a pharmacy tech
Great video! 😁 I'm currently a med lab student, do you have any tips for clinicals?
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoy this video. Im definitely going to make a video on this topic and how to do well in clinicals but for right now I’ll give you a couple things make sure that you are always on time, you’re willing to learn, and help out as much as you can in the lab. You never know they might be your future employer.
This is a great video, thank you for sharing :) I am wondering - where are the microscopes ?
Thank you :) I'm glad you enjoyed it. I didn't record them but we did have two.
Wanna talk with you and go abroad like Canada as a medical laboratory technologist....
😮😊
Hey girly, so I’m currently a “Medical Lab Technician student” at a community college and with a bachelors degree as a medical laboratory scientist, is it really a fulfilling career in healthcare. It’s my first year into the laboratory profession and I’m still new with the career/degree types.
I know some time has passed but how has everything gone for you? :) it honestly is a great healthcare career and I wish you the best on your journey! Hope to hear an update from you soon!
Hi! Do you still work as a CLS? And would you recommend this career to others? I'm currently interested in the field. Thank you!
Hi! I’ll be making a video very soon regarding where I am currently at in life.
I manifest this 😭
So great!
In this type of career do you mainly process specimens? Is there any research involved as if you were submitting work for publication?
There’s different types of laboratories you can work out. As a medical technologist, you typically do not do any research per se, but you can work at a research laboratory.
Thanks for the video but I can't hear anything youre saying!
Which part?

hello im Devra from Indonesia, may I ask something? Can I as Indonesian work in there as medical lab tech ? thank u so much
If you have the qualification, then yes, you can work anywhere in the world...No job is given by race or nationality, because that is what you're actually asking...It is given by qualification, skills, and competency!
Nice vlog! ☺️
Thank you! :)
Hey, what do I need to study to become a medical lab scientist, I'm based in South Africa and I'm more interested in Immunohistochemistry and histology.
Is it always so loud in the lab?
Sometimes it is due to the machines
Thanks hey ,l like your videos ,l am also a medical laboratory scientist in Africa
hello mam thanks for your all information
i have 1 question. i have done BSC in MLT degree. in english language and i have already did WES process and i got report as well and they wrote recognized institution. so is it correct report ? do i have to take IELTS exam ?? or if i will study there diploma in mlt for that also we 5 years of experience to eligible for this exam ? my husband is in kitchener and i want to work there so which exam i have to give to work as a lab technologist ?
Hey Rosa is there a way I can get a touch with you? Tengo unas preguntas de como obtener la certificacion atraves de la experiencia
What lab do you work in? Because I noticed you mentioned chemistry and blood bank. Are they separate at your hospital or separate ?
Our lab is small and each department is in the same larger space. It is just separated by walls. I am a generalist
Omg girl and they let you wear nails!😝 I’m trying to get over nails so when I start my clinicals, I won’t miss having them! I’m glad another Hispanic woman is doing CLS! We gotta represent!🤪 so to graduate next semester!🥳
Yes lol I even have them now but I don't get them too long so I can still type and make sure they do not interrupt my work. YESSS I'm so happy you are in this field! I wish you the best in your last upcoming semester :)
@@RosaPerez I'm currently doing my Bachelor of Health Science in Medical Laboratory Science (Honors) and next year, in my final year (4th year), I will have to choose a specialty, and the thing is...I want to be a generalist (like you), not specialize, because I like all of the different fields in MLS, and can't make up my mind on what to specialize in...So, I would appreciate it if you could make a video on how to choose a specialty in the field of MLS. My specialties range from: Medical Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Clinical Pathology, Immunology, Immunohaematology, Cytology, Histology, Cytogenetics, and Virology.
Is there a community for undergraduate medical laboratory std?
Hmm that’s a good question I am not too sure
I am wearing glasses since 11.is it gonna be a problem for applying biomedical science degree.
I dont think it would be a problem
Did you have to learn new things for the covid testing or is it just the same as mrsa and the flu test

Do you have to do phlebotomy?
Some jobs do require you to do phlebotomy while others do not. I hope this was helpful :)
I am possibly going through a career change. I am wanting to do pharmacy tech, but I am interested in the MLT programs and wanting to also be in that kind of environment. Any tips how to start? I already have a Bachelor's degree.
What did you get your bachelor's degree in?

Are you still considering a career change to work as a MLS?
@@RosaPerez Yes or even just an MLT. But where I live programs for it aren't really around. My school has nursing programs as well as surgical tech, but as an MLT hard to get in.
Would you consider moving or do you want to stay in the area. If MLT is difficult to get in I would say nursing is a better option.
