Great Vid! The only way oil gets into combustion chamber from the valves is a leaking valve seal. That is the purpose of the seal :-) Carbon build up around the valve and opening can cause compression issues. Going thought this now on my 87 XR/XL600 rebuild.
lol I'm watching every vid!!! my yz250 has been fouling plugs left and right I was almost defeated but I got it fixed. videos like these give me faith cause I was so ready to say I'm going to just sell it!
A trick I like use when putting the valve keepers in is put some grease on a screwdriver and put the keeper on the grease then install. The grease will squirt out the top and you can wipe it off. It won't hurt anything. One thing I saw was that you didn't reseat the valves. You had them out probably should of.
Fix it, there is not a limitless amount of these and the cost to fix it up will at worst be a few hundred. The time you invest in figuring out what is causing the issue is just adding up to your knowledge/experience so you are doing the right thing there (even at some times I can say that I do think huh, how could he miss that, but as you are learning that is what you are meant to do) . I like that you got the bb kit, that is something (add a hot cam as well) that wakes these bikes up really well.
its funny were actually doing very similar things to our quads at the same time. you got a much better deal on your quad then I did and mines ended up having only 10psi compression and I purchased mines for almost 2x price so your winning in my books. its my first quad and I kinda wanted some build content for the channel so im not butt hurt but it would have been nice if the seller had been straight forward about everything . keep it going man. maybe one day you can have a subscriber meet and ride some trails or something!
Not a bad machine for the money . U def have a 2nd gear issue that gonna require a tear down to diag before it before it causes a serious problem . Also with it having a hot cam it could stand for some more main jet . I'd play around with that . As I've stated in some other videos normally smoking under throttle or load is caused in the piston / ring area . My guess is they rebuilt the top end and did not set rings in correct orientation / possibly scraper pointed up instead of down. Looking forward to the 440 build on the other bike . Keep pushing love the vids.
Usually the most common part to go bad with the 400ex's that has to do with the spark is the cdi box and stator i chased a problem where the 2004 400ex would fire right up and run great and then after it got warm it would take more than 1/4 throttle and it would bog down replaced coil and stator etc and finally what fixed it was the cdi box haha it was a pain cause usually they never go bad its mostly likely the coil normally.. some machines just have the weirdest of things that are the problem haha
@@2vintage Looks like your getting things sorted out nicely and will have a pretty decent quad when its all said and done. Whats next figuring out that second fear noise? Shift fork issue?
The water probably came from the vent tube and condescension in the tank. Water sinks filler ur bowl. Be my guess. Valves not closing will have no effect on smoking. Only the smoothness of it running. You can't know for sure the rings are worn without checking end gap and thickness. Even with a perfect bore. The rings can be worn. That's why they smoke first to let you know. I would of used a welder and a 1/4 rod to get that stubbern bolt out. A drill a mandrel a tube and some Polish for metal compound you can do a poor man's valve lap job. Good job man. Learning, riding and living.
Yeah my 2005 Yamaha Raptor 350 had a little metal plug that I had to drill through to reach the screw. Makes no sense that they started doing that. Manufacturers act like the only reason it gets used is to run rich and gain power but that's not always the case. Maybe that's the case with this Honda because he did say it was fully seated but that wasn't the case with my Yamaha. After I drilled through, my screw was 2 turns out.
First... camshaft cannot be 180 degrees off, you just have to turn engine once more and then its right :D that is very stupid thing to say. Second... Valve seats have nothing to do with engine smoking, if they are bad they just let the air through, blue smoke comes when oil gets inside cylinder.
2vintage you said it multiple times that “maybe the timing is off” if it were “180 off” it wouldn’t run and it wouldn’t pop over like that if it were off
Between the 250r/330r -400ex-450r ... which was your favorite in order 123 and why ... I'd bet alot of people would like to know ... and informative vids are great like the detailed video best cause it helps people 👍
Those are called helicoils they use them for when they strip thread in aluminum instead of tapping the hole a size bigger for a new bolt.. those valve cover bolts have a specific torque so they don't strip like that ones did
Always wanted a bug eyed 400ex since I was like 10 and first saw one but kinda always picked different atvs I don't really like buying used but I just ended up trading my dirtbike for one and finally got my hands on one super happy running lean and carb leaking fuel but got a new carb on order with some jets and got a big gun exhaust coming to I just don't like what's on it now.
I told you guys him buying a second one was just gonna be a bunch of the same stuff he did on the first. Now he has 3! Lol oh well if you like something then why not have multiples 🤷🏼🛠 😂😂 jk bud love you and all you do keep on doing what you do. Maybe move away from quads and dirt bikes?... do like a buggy or go cart/ cross cart? Car, truck? Power wheels build?...

Those gaskets have a squish range and then they are junk so just because its in one peice doesn't mean its good and that cam wouldn't have the decompression lever if it was aftermarket.. so either the decompression lever isn't actually in it or its the stock cam which its not so that means the thing you thought was the decompression lever wasn't that at all.. lol because when you took the cam out it would be on the cam...
I used to have one of those in that quads and let me tell you it was a good quad I had it for about a year-and-a-half and beat the living crap out of it
I got a 2005 trx450 an it won’t start an went i took the spark plug out an kicked it over it with my hand an it still has a bunch of compression what do you think the problem is ?????
hello i am a new sub enjoy ur videos a lot if i was going to buy a 4 wheeler i would buy it from u do a great job going though everything i would like a longer video
The issue was that there was water sitting in the bottom of the carb bowl i seen the water sitting on top of the fuel when you took the bowl off and it was sitting on the cardboard
Always use starter fluid never go through everything you went through without using starter fluid it's the 1st thing you do if starter fluid works.that tells you it's the carburetor

Make a trail, race and dunes quad out of the 3
Edit love the Honda type series that you’ve been making
12:44 that is straight up water that came out of the float bowl
Yep! I missed that! That's why it wasn't starting! I even drained the old gas out...hmm very weird
@@2vintage could be from pressure washing it
@@ricerneon399 I didn't wash it before the carb clean
Water gets in weird places... trust me I know. Had the same thing happen to a scooter lol.

Your carburetor has a water in the float bowl.
I noticed that as well. @12:51 you see the distinctive water beading on the cardboard. Theres your problem right there.

Hey Joe, new to the channel but binge watching 👀 you and enjoy the content, keep'em coming thanks for sharing and as always "Howdy from Texas "!!
You could also lap the valves a little before puttingthem back in it will seal really good
He doesn't lap valve's..will do a top end build and never even Check to see if valves leak or at minimum hold water ..
@@n2vxc ...... or use a little bit of brake clean and compressed air and clean the parts off before you work on them.......

Good job man! Do you think it can keep up with the 450 since it has that cam? Maybe Chuck needs to revisit.
The air fuel screw was not stripped they are like that from 2000 and up so you can’t mess with them do to emissions

Joe the timing doesn’t just be “off” all the time jeepers creepers I just love watching this dude “work” I mean hack
I never said ot was off? I said it possinly skipped a tooth. A common problem for these 400ex is timing off on them.

Well done on the rebuild, nailed it
Sound like the chains slappin that might be the noise Honda’s like to chain slap bad
Nope, Thats piston slap. Typical in the 400EX, hence the reason is smokes so bad. Rings are shot.

The jets are stock but the pipe isn't might need to go a little bigger on your main
It's a HotCams Stage 2.
... `intake: .354 inches / 254 deg` | `exhaust: .350 inches / 248.5 deg`
I had a 440 and it’s totally worth it you can do 4 gear wheelies all day.
Make a video on how to put new valve seals in
It sounds like the chain making that noise. My 450r does it some times too.

When you opened the carburetor float bowl water came out. You could see it clearly over the carboard.
I'm a little late, do I? 😁
Did you extract that broken bolt?
The only way oil would get past the seats is if it had bad seals
Guy honestly doesn't know what he's talking about half the time
alex morrell I’d say more than half the time
Why did u adjust the idle with the airbox off? Its sucking in air then so it will probably die when you put it back on

When you took off the float bowl, about half a gallon of water came out...did you ever figure out the knocking sound in second gear?
quad rental business in the making
I don’t think you are supposed to run the stock pilot and main bc you have a slip on aftermarket exhaust
Ya only need to re-jet if you change out the head pipes. Not required for a slip-on muffler.

I used to have one of those in that quads and let me tell you it was a good quad I had it for about a year-and-a-half and beat the living crap out of it
My 2007 has a weird knocking sound in 2nd gear too. Never could find out what it is.
You should try and find a lt250r again. Those are pretty fun.
Love seeing the sport quads man👍
That metal ring with the air mixture screw is supposed to be in there it lets the spring ride on it instead of the housing
Dude the cylinder was full of oil from you taking the head off so of course its gonna smoke for a bit after its together
How do you find all these good deals on these dirt bikes and quads, do you look and Facebook market or something else?
I got a 2005 trx450 an it won’t start an went i took the spark plug out an kicked it over it with my hand an it still has a bunch of compression what do you think the problem is ?????

You can afford a top end gasket kit and valve seals but not the 5 dollar brake reservoir cap runs smooth clack clack clack...
Bad ass video bro !!!
Definitely should have put a set of rings in it especially as cheap as a set of rings are
Definitely need an ultrasonic cleaner for the carbs
Id honestly sell that one and the black one. Keep the first one you had.
Yeah that's what I'm thinking
2vintage keep the first one and the gray one
Word Joe, I love the ex you fixed the death wobble and redid the top end. That quad will last forever
Do you need grip glue for new grips?
Im thinking you have a bent shift fork or its damaged why it makes those sounds in 2nd gear
Carbon will raise compression numbers.
You should put a Cr 500 motor on it like if you agree
Maybe on the 450. The wheelbase is too short on the 400 and lifts so easily. Plus the 450 is already outfitted for the cooling system.
Any recommendations on how to get a sport quad under 1500? I am a teen so I can’t really buy anything that’s too much money.
The 17 dislikes don’t own a quad or dirt bike ‼️‼️
How did you get the valve cover hole nut off..vise grip?
Well you have 3 now but i mean these quads aint gonna be built ever again if you got funds and dedication just keep it and hand it down the family just a thought 💭
Hello, do you sell used quads or these parts?
You need to put the red hubs off this one on the good one and the chain and that cam haha
If u keep it dont do the hotcams unless u plan on changing the crank keep it stock..
By the time these few 400Ex's are all together and running you should be a 4hundo yoda LoL
You should do a quad givaway
Dude carbon on the valves will not make it smoke? You blow my mind sometimes man..I like your videos but some of the stuff you say and do is mind boggling
For aftermarket cams I don’t think you need the Decompression valve
No I don't think you do
Water man lol I guess it's been a year ago but soon as I seen the puddle on the cardboard I could tell it was water
If your going to change the valve seals why not lightly lap the valves while your at it to give them a fresh seat
Bro let that thing ride ! If second goes she goes I had a xr70 that did that In first for years ! Something in the gear box
Its smoking cuz of the exhuast...it wasn't jetted for it. So it killed the valves seals
I see a lot of water in the fuel that came out the bowl when you cleaned the carb
Did you ever put the timing chain tensioner back in? Wtf....
12:43 alot of water in the gas from the float bowl
I was thinking it was the air screw considering it would only fire on full throttle
