It is pretty good. Just not what it could have been if it was given proper attention. I like it, it’s fun, just not FUN FUN- also I did make a 3 and a half hour video saying why I liked this game, this was just a small “complaint” if you even want go that far 😂 thanks for comment tho brother
Something that really exposes how much better the combat could’ve been is mods. The vanilla combat has so many bullet sponges, including yourself, and enemies don’t even react to getting shot. With a few mods such as PDO, bloodlust, and WERO the combat is so much better. You bullets actually do damage to the body and enemies react to it, but at the same time you take more damage to balance this.
Not sure if you’ve seen the NakeyJakey video revisiting this game but he also says the same thing you did here, but also when it came to other game mechanics like the bounty and clothing systems
It’s a really weird part of the game, it’s really immersive in terms of the rest of the game but it just feels like it could have been a bit more fluid I guess? I’m not sure, probably didn’t word it too well in the video 😂 definitely need to play it on PC with Mods to see how much better they make it at some point
I found it a bit clunky I'll admit, but i more or less just shrugged my shoulders and got on with it, and if anything the minimal effort on the combat meant I could focus more on the other myriad gameplay elements and the amazing story, so I guess if that's a trade off, it was one i could live with 😊
Oh yeah definitely, I mean combat to me in this game is the least of my worries- the gun play is awesome and the rest of the game is perfect, I love rdr2 so much, sunk months of my life into it, if the combat being clunky is the worst of its issues, I’ll take that trade too! Thanks for the comment man! 💙🦇
i have to respectfully disagree. the combat is great in this game. I've been playing since day one. i would say the melee combat is the best melee combat in all of the HD rockstar games. and second best out of all of their games. (bully is a little better.) sure it's nothing fancy or in depth. but i play video games to chill and have fun. i have played some of those in depth melee games like spiderman and god of war. and i got so confused with a lot of the different moves and abilities. yes rdr2s melee is simple. and not complex but it's better than a lot of others in my opinion. and i have seen some people die at fist fighting in a few let's play walkthroughs. so it's certainly not easy for everyone. same with the gunfighting. i have seen plenty of people die in gunfights that are super easy for me. not everyone is great at it. but i really enjoy the gun battles. the guns sound great. and getting kills is satisfying. it's never gotten old even after 6 years of playing. i never had a problem with the cover system or using the guns. the cattleman is one of my favorite guns. it's easily better than the double action. you can upgrade the guns to have better range and damage. pvp in this game is a lot of fun. overall i think combat in this game can be a lot of fun. yes it's not super challenging or advanced. but not every game needs to be. also i have a question. what do you think of the killcams in story mode? that was the one combat thing that you didn't mention. and if you had to give a rating out of 10. how would you rate melee and gunfights separately.
I think the killcams are really fun, always enjoy seeing them pop up whenever I’m in a gunfight, I agree with most of what you’ve said there- it’s nice to have a more chilled out melee experience with less stressful mechanics like the Spiderman, GOW or Arkham’s games. If I had to give melee a rating out of 10 I’d say a solid 7.5, like I said in the video, I don’t think it’s awful by any means, it’s fun, brutal and immersive but I feel like there’s a lot of room for improvement. If I had to give gunfights a rating I’d say a 9, I LOVE gunfights in this game and the historical accuracy of the weapons is incredible, don’t think that’ll ever get old for me😅 Really enjoyed reading this comment though brother, thanks for sharing it💙
RDRII is my favorite game. And I agree that its combat and mission structure is flawed. That being said, it does immersion, story, and character better than anything else I’ve ever played. Rockstar usually prioritizes those things over gameplay, which I hope they tie together better in their future games.
>Rockstar usually prioritizes those things over gameplay That's not true at all. That's an exclusively MODERN Rockstar thing and has gotten progressively worse with time - the PS2 GTA games were extremely focused on emergent gameplay.
Ohhhh so we're rage baiting now? Listen I think the dynamic of something like Arkham Knight is better but comparing gunplay to an action game makes zero sense, sure the gunplay is pretty basic but bad? Not even remotely still something like TLOU Part 2 did way better on that front
I believe that there is a lot more to red deads combat than Arkham knights combat as in Arkham knight you spam buttons and the game pretty much plays itself the only problem I've ever had with red deads combat is that the lock on might be a bit to strong at times which makes shots that should be very satisfying just feel scripted in a way and that at times there is a over reliance on dead eye which always slowed down the gun fights in my opinion, maybe it could do with a better enemy AI maybe enemies that can also take advantage of things like dynamite and molotovs and had a better understanding of cover but I can't name any open world story game I've played that has ai that can freely function that well but maybe GTA 6 will change that
Freeflow Combat was revolutionary, RDR2s hand to hand combat is basic in comparison. I get where you’re coming from though, better enemy AI who use weapons more intelligently would be absolutely amazing. Really hope they make the AI in GTA 6 more intelligent while keeping that same weighty feel of RDR2s combat, I love the fist fights in RDR2 but it left alot to be desired. Thanks for the comment man 😁👍
Honestly I think RDR2s combat on the surface is good- it’s just not very deep. It’s great visually and it’s fun as hell if you get good at it but in terms of depth- it’s lacking in my opinion- but again that’s not to say I think it’s “bad” or that I’m “hating” I’m just pointing out its lack of real depth compared to it’s competitors
Agreed, this was more of an opinion than a fact, I do like the combat, I’ve put hundreds of hours into RDR2 and felt like I’ve used the combat enough to justify the opinions in the video. Definitely agree with what you’re saying though, it’s fine- in fact it’s fun, effective and nice to use, thanks for the comment man!,💙🦇
I'm sorry, mate, but the combat isn't bad at all. With the melee combat you could drag people and throw people. If you can't get into it don't bother playing the game. If all of your videos are based on very nitpickey complaints it's no wonder people don't subscribe.
I’ve 100 percented the game twice, it’s my favourite game of all time and thus I’ve played it enough to pick up on this sort of thing- personally I think it’s a weaker part of the game, not bad, just not great and you’re right there are a couple of bits I missed. Fully get where you’re coming though of course, still new to this sort of stuff so I’ll take on board the feedback for next time, cheers man 💙
It's not that bad but definitely room for improvement. Let's just hope GTA 6 and future projects will have better combat I've seen worse and the most important thing is that the combat does work (for the most part) it's serviceable. It's not broken or anything.
@@DefiniteHD Id persoanlly say RDR2, it's more brutal and despite it's lack of real depth it's still more fun and deep than GTA 5 and I do love it more than GTAs personally :)
@@CharlesCardy Same but both combat are perfectly fine in my opinion. I guess RDR2 combat is more refined and slightly better in certain aspects than GTA 5 combat. Especially the hand to hand combat. GTA 5 was a let down and a downgrade compared to GTA 4 hand to hand combat in my opinion.

Player movement in RDR2 is terrible in general. The terrible combat is just a subset of that.
