Alex Honnold's Welsh slate climbing experience

  • While on his "Flying Solo" tour, we took Alex Honnold to the Welsh slate quarries with pro-climber Hazel Findlay and legend Johnny Dawes.
As Alex says about slate climbing, "For the real connoisseur of world climbing I feel like it's a must-visit". But which route do you think he found to be like "normal" Yosemite climbing?

Love how every time Alex is being interviewed he looks like he's just about fall a sleep. Like he's almost slurring his speech. He must get no excitement or fear from anything else but climbing.

Remember seeing some English guy, who was one of the few true samurais left, cant remember his name interviewed and he had very similar eyes, cant really interpret the look but it seemed to reflect great self control and alertness coupled with a fearless quality. He was very dangerous and one who one all tournamenst of the samurai martial art.

Nick Lozica - A comparison to Bear Grylls is still an insult. Alex has been called the world's best free soloist by many an expert. What I like best about him is that he seems to have no idea how famous he is...😂😂😂

    • @DeathBringer769

He was one of the youngest to ever summit Everest. Grylls is no slouch even if people give him shit. He's not a free soloer like Honnold though, and Honnold is the best in that category for sure.

This dude changed my life. I broke my back climbing in 1995. I didn't work out again until this year. I saw his climbs, got off my ass and have not only climbed up 150 feet, but climbed down the same. Just inspiring. Thank you Alex, Vivian, and Johnny. Joined my local climbing gym and have already lost 13 pounds in 8 weeks too!

Squiggy Wigginz bro good job man! I have played extreme sports for over 20 years and broken so many damn bones. My knees are the worst and have very bad TBI. Anyways last year I could barley walk 3 blocks down the road and at that time I haven’t played sports for a few years because of how much pain I was in. Then I moved to South Dakota and my fiancé’s showed me climbing and I been addicted ever since. I kept having flash backs of my 20Ft + high falls and was like no way I’ll ever be able to climb. Well I can tell you this my fear of heights is defiantly gone lol and I can now do pistol squats on each leg. Mind you it hurts like hell, but climbing is the most freeing thing I have ever done. Hope your back feels better man, I have 5 bulged disc and multiple pinched nerves. I can’t feel my right side my neck anymore blah lol. Oh well need that adrenaline !

@@ProDMiner You sound alot like me. Bad knees from catching baseball, broken fingers that aren't straight, broken gave that tingles from hitting a tree on a dirt bike that's throttle stuck, painful feet, etc, etc. Climbing, even in the gym gives me a new found strength again. I used to climb from birth until 25. If it was only a sport back then like it is now! But now, new found love for sure. If you're ever near Cincinnati, Ohio hit me up!

    • @ProDMiner

Squiggy Wigginz oh for sure dude! I used to live in south bend IN I been there for the skateparks. And ya man my finger hurt so bad all the time it blows. But now I found that I stretch daily man and put my hands in some warm water and that helps. My name on Instagram is leadthewayblake.s you can follow me if you like and when I go back that way I’ll hit ya up and we can go climb :)

Ehouse, check out some of Dawes work when he was younger and fit, makes moves you would never think possible.. polar opposite of Honold, mind you Honold approaches the climb like he's going to do it sans ropes, so he's methodic, flowing and fast.. you can only climb so much till you gas out, so energy conservation is paramount..
If you can find Dawes doing some no hands climbing, or jumping across faces it's well worth seeing.. goddam spiderman shit

Chiefs Kingdom that’s what most people do when they are on camera or in a group conversation. It’s only actors that maintain a certain character 100% of the time. I find Hazel’s response much more natural. Her expression changes because she’s paying attention to what’s being said without intruding on the other person’s conversation. You’ll see her interject at various points during the interview and her face goes from straight to smiling as she does so.

He was at the top, or end, of the route- at the final anchor. Since he will be relying on only those bolts to make his way back down the route (rappelling or being lowered), they are doubled up for redundancy.

Whether they're ex-lovers or just platonic friends, Hazel and Alex have shared-in and been on some pretty deep excursions together: Eurkea Wall, the NAT GEO thing where they went to some fjord off the coast of Africa, and this. If anything, they have a deep bond in friendship revolving around this art-form called climbing which in many ways could lead into a kind of deep-seated lovey-dovey relationship down the line as the cumulative emotions and memories would be too great to ignore.

Climbing relationships can go really deep. The trust level is intense, you see each other at your best and your worst, and it can take years to find the right person and longer to merge your skills into a strong partnership. I've climbed with partners male and female, and the connection is the same. Sometimes it turns into more than that, but really, it doesn't *need* to. One female partner said our relationship had everything but the sex, and we both agreed sex would just complicate what was a perfectly good thing. You can get laid anywhere; good climbing partners are rare. :)

Hi Robert, do excuse the late reply, must've slipped through the cracks, thanks for the thoughtful and insightful reply! That is a very interesting on what you described as the levels of intensity that can develop in climbing partnerships.I'm not a climber, though it doesn't take much for the imagination to simulate an idea of what it might be like when you've got 4K/ HD video coverage shadowing these incredible athletes as they demonstrate such prolific feats of human endurance and precision. I can only assume that the closest similar type of partnership in comparison, would be soldiers, like in war, soldier's are presented with life and death situations that when survived in a mission, it bonds them for life.
With something like climbing or even free-climbing where it's voluntary, considered a sporting activity, every step, every hook point, you're presented with something that could be life threatening, where your partner may be the only option to bail you out. That's intense! So I totally get where you're coming from when there is an agreed upon act of omitting sex, as it could interfere with the constant balance in your state of mind (even off the mountain) and thus, maintaining an equilirbrium of your consciousness in order to keep consistent and on top of your game.

Doubtful. Just a platonic relationship built out of trusting their lives to each other. I have the same thing with my regular climbing partner. I could never date her due to ideological differences (shes dating another guy that we climb with regularly) but we get on rock and things just click with us. We know when to push each other and we know when to back off and let the other regain their headspace or just when to just lower the other to the ground. We know each other's idiosyncrasies with climbing too. I think it has something to do with the fact that I was her first trad lead belay and she was mine (both about 6 months apart, with me being the latter).
