Also: the Sisters did lots of covers of stuff that people didn't consider right or accurate for their style of music. They covered Leonard Cohen, Hot Chocolate, Gary Glitter, Kylie Minogue... I guess it kind of works both ways: they do 'gothic' or rock version of something and someone covers them in a totally not gothic style. And it's OK.

Diane Birch is the real thing. I'm so sick of the formula singers with made up 'street cred' or the bands formed from cattle call auditions. Hey Scott, I'm with you!! I'm a child of the 80's and went out to as honest-to-goodness real record store to look for this on vinyl way back in late 80's after hearing it on radio. Man, it was such a sad day when that record store closed. I also had Gene Loves Jezebel and the Cure, among so many others, on vinyl. Loved the artwork!! As for this song, Diane renders a totally diff vibe from the original's somewhat dark&somber ambience. I'll forgive her, though, bec I've been following her work and see she's a true artist (and a darn good & humorous one, at that).

I'm far from a goth scene purist, but I agree with you. Except on the point that it introduced the music of SoM to a new audience, since the musical composition of this cover is gone. Some of the rhythm is still there, but the melody changed, the actual musical score is gone, just the lyrics and some semblance of the chorus melody remain. I enjoy covers alot, but one is hard pressed to find much of SoM left in this one.
This almost 50 year old punk who worked a few SOM concerts 30 or so years ago likes it...betcha don't like Apocalypica either...or Die Krupps since both groups have done covers of songs in a different style...
