Did lawn maintenance/landscaping over 20 years and had a business for 15years..all my mowers were side discharge..after listening to you,im not sold why it matters much to have back discharge..if you do simple planning before you mow,none of the things you brought up should be an issue..if you take care of the mower,you can hand down those diesels to your grandchildren..built like tanks..they were VERY expensive 10 years ago(J.D. diesels started at at 12k) .i cant imagine what they cost now
They are lifetime mowers of taken care of. I also did landscaping about 15 years ago and have owned several commercial mowers. Yes you can make side discharge work, but it requires practically no thought or planning for rear discharge. They are much safer when it comes to tossing things at homes, vehicles, into the street ect. Most important thing for me is how clean I am after getting off. Side discharge can't compete with that.
Nice lawnmower upgrade👍. I think its best use when the grass is not too tall. The only drawback that I can think is when the grass clippings dries after you cut it, the lawn won't look as green.
That mower seems incredibly quiet, Andrew. I noticed that you didn't need ear protection when you were mowing. My little JD lawn tractor hearing protection is an absolute must!
Commercial units are pricey, but typically outlast the box store stuff many times over. I've learned my lesson on quality over the last few decades and commercial stuff is worth the money.

It's hard to understand until you ride on one. I don't think I will ever go back to a mid mount mower again.
I wondered if you'd do that after watching the comparison video you did. Night and day difference between the two! I, like you, hate the dust kicked up with side discharge. You have me thinking it's time for an upgrade! lol! Enjoyed it!
Hey Andrew have you thought about using mulching blades on this rear discharge to make the clippings smaller? Yard looks good, but really you know that's Tiffany's mower. She just let's you use it now and then.😆

I've personally bought and owned Kubota and Snapper commercial mowers over the last 2 decades. I also use to do landscaping for a living. Both were leaps and bounds above box store units and cut so much better. In all honesty, those units didn't even come close to the quality and especially the ride of the Grasshopper. I truly feel Grasshopper is a purchase that will be the last mower purchase for most.
The deck lift actuator should be lowered to the stop and left to float under no load, otherwise every bump the deck takes is torque fed backwards through the gear set in the actuator. The small gears won’t last long getting jammed back and forth constantly like that. You’ll blow the gears out way before you bend that shaft. 👊
I do buy a lot, but I'm also sponsored with a lot of equipment. Either way I am honest about it all as I want you spending your money on what's best for you.
That's on their mid mount mowers, it has a 4th spreader blade. I find the 3 blade system with one counter rotation blade in the front mount to spread perfectly.
Hard for me to judge scale and you may have said it... but, is that the 61" or 72" deck? If not the 72", with the acreage you care for, was there a reason you chose the 61" deck over the 72"? Considering one of these mowers and currently run a three point 72" Grooming Mower behind a tractor. Thanks!
I got the 72 inch because we have so much to mow. It's amazing how much time we cut off with this setup. I highly recommend the 1.3l diesel or 40 hp gas of the 900D for a large 72 inch deck. If you went with a 61 inch, other series like the 700 series offers smaller engine options. With that said the 900D is perfectly suited for smaller decks too.
I also ran a 72 inch grooming mower behind my John Deere. There is NO comparison of that to my Grasshopper with a 72 inch deck. The Grasshopper is multiple times faster at mowing than my tractor was. Feel free to ask anymore questions you might have.

But, I've have been looking into the 900D or 725DT for mowing. We have a perfect rectangle of reclained cattle pasture that is now smooth and all grass, 1/4 mile long and 1/8 mile wide. So the cruise control is really nice. Any advice on 725 vs 900? We have a buch of diesel so thought we'd stick with that.
Where did you buy the deck? Have to get it in parts or did it come all assembled? I have a Grasshopper and I'd like to go to rear discharge as well, but don't know where to find out about a complete replacement deck.
Staying clean would be top of the list for me!!!

I have a 1 acre yard, and really dread mowing. The main reason is the dust.
@Bob-Adkins Grasshopper does offer smaller models with rear discharge. A standard mid mount model would be just fine for a 1 acre yard.

That's true, but if you cut often there isn't much clippings. Those are usually gone in 2 days in the sunlight.

A toro grounds master 5900 has a rear discharge. But I have a hard time justifying the cost of one .LOL

It has it's pros for me. Not as clean of a cut, but excells is so many other areas it's worth it.

They are the original zero turn company and make one of the best mowers made in my opinion.

I did mention that in the video. You always want the pressure on the plastic deck height stops, not the actuator.
