As a person who grew up in a post-eastern bloc/Non Aligned country (Yugoslavia), I can tell you that Jalopy perfectly encapsulates the way we used to live during the Cold War, and especially after the fall of Yugloslavia. The only problem I had with the game is that it oftentimes felt unfinished, but, honestly, so did the Eastern Bloc. The other problem is the map, it did pull me out of my immersion, especially in Yugoslavia. Don't get me wrong, the map is beautiful and it is trully well designed, however, the Bulgarian border being right after Dubrovnik (literally oposite sides of the country, some 1000km apart) truly doesn't make sense. Apart from that, this is the only game that made me feel as a child due to how well it was designed in terms of artstyle and vibe.
It's a beautiful expression of a game; an amazing concept, but lacks any real content. Wish it was qas fleshled out to be a proper game. It's basically a simpler Death Stranding.
I gotta agree with you for the most part, the game is an abandoned buggy mess, in my Steam review for the game I mention that it's hard to tell if the name Jalopy is referring to the car or the game. I can't imagine the game working much longer as PC's continues to change over the years. As for other driving/car repair games I'd recommend The Long Drive and My Summer Car, review them? Wink wink. Now I gotta get personal, I enjoyed Jalopy way too much for what it was, ever since the Steam greenlight trailer came out I was sickeningly obsessed with it probably because I was so poor I couldn't buy it, you always want what you can't have, but I was also longing for my own first car and freedom which was way more unobtainable. Anyhow about 3 years later I bought a used PC off craigslist threw in a 750 ti and eventually remembered the game, played it and soaked up every minute of it. After fully upgrading the car with HSK parts, they're the fastest ones, durability doesn't matter because the vanadium wrench repairs them for free. I had the ultimate car but was left feeling empty. 5 years after there's a Trabant 601 sitting in my garage, I press the brake pedal everyday to prevent the wheel cylinders from seizing. I'm waiting for the first spring rain to wash the corrosive winter salt off the MN roads, just so I can hear that beautiful 2-stroke exhaust on the country freeway one more time.
Great vid thanks. I agree with a lot of your points having played it. Landlord Super was enjoyable and had good character, would be cool to see a review of it.
Uncle's words are really misleading when it comes to how you actually have to play the game. The odds of successfully making the trip from scratch are infinitesimally low. The road really will never give you the money to progress continuously, BUT you seem to think that resetting is a horrible thing. It really isn't. Starting the trip over doesn't reset your car, its inventory, your money assuming its above baseline, or any of the upgrades you purchased. Its not a roguelike, its an RPG. You need to grind a bit with the free parts from uncle's garage that you get every reset to earn the money to really make an attempt at the trip. Ideally you earn enough money to buy level 1 or 2 of the tool rack for you car, which has an unlimited use repair wrench before you really make a go of it. IMO the best way to make money is to repeatedly grind the first leg, taking the spare tires to sell, and picking up any medicine and wine from the road, or from the gas station if its marked down. When you roll a day where the medicine or wine is expensive in the first leg, you sell it off to the station for all the cash on hand. A few selling days worth of money should be enough to make a good attempt.
The game has some issues but until pacific drive drops there isn't really any other road trip roguelites out there. My Summer Car is some sort of survival life sim, and Long Drive is an asset flip shitpost. I personally enjoyed trying to figure out how to crack the nut that is its gameplay open but that might be because I took a different approach of purposely doing failed runs in order to save up for upgrades, the trunk kit especially frees up space for loot and gives you an unlimited wrench(its can't fully repair parts, but still it saves a lot of cash).
I think that it is a good game, just it is half-ready. The game content is too lean. It is great that I can leave to road to explore, but there is so little to explore. And what if I reach Istanbul? Nothing, I can drive back. What if I reach Berlin? Nothing, I can drive back... Money is only problem at the beginning. You can earn a lot by smuggling illegal goods. At that time this was very typical in Eastern Europe. About the upgrades, the roof rack is a must have, the rest are only nice to have. The ridiculous reliability of the car is not a flaw, it is a major plot element. This is a jalopy after all.
@@polskabalaclavaI’ll help him out - the video is poorly researched, his complaints are unreasonable and it just seems like he’s trying to turn his own opinion of the game (which is completely fair, it is not really the crim de la crim of video game experiences out there, that’s for sure) into a general critique. Maybe he would’ve preferred to drive an f150 or a mclaren through the italian countryside, but the point of the game is that you’re in east germany in a car you barely put together in a scrapyard trying to gtfo from the soviet bloc. It was BAD back then and the jalopy (clearly based on the irl east german trabant btw) is supposed to suck ass. You’re meant to see same-ish scenery (until you get to yugoslavia which I found to be beautiful) because that’s what it is like. The whole point is that you’re kinda desperate for money and your car keeps breaking down and while everything is actually cheap, so is your wallet. It is more of a weird trip down memory lane reliving memories from the soviet union and obviously, that’s not for everyone, but many critiques were surface level or on subjective things or on things that I, for example, overcame rather easily. Parts keep breaking? save up for upgrades. Car getting beaten up by the road? Drive more carefully. Game not fun? Refund it. Complaining about car repairs taking up a majority of your budget without trying the rather obvious “maybe parts that I bought from the manufacturer instead of found lying around in a trash heap are better?” is just disappointing. Let’s be honest, he just forced himself to play through a game he didn’t really like and that was designed with a different audience in mind and decided to make a negative review of it. This is sad because he just wasted his time and money on something he would’ve refunded if the point was for him to enjoy the game and that is very frustrating, but I would recomment giving the game an hour, maybe an hour and a half and if you don’t like it, refund it. I actually cut going into detail about the Trabant from the video because I felt it was a bit tangential to the point I was trying to make about the gameplay. Having your shit significantly degrade just from driving from one city to another isn't very fun.
@@Tymptra But it’s not meant to be fun - that is just how bad the piece of shit was. My issue on this comment was your use of the word “realism”, because that is exactly what was achieved by the car breaking down every 5 minutes, not having enough stuff to fix it most of the time and not being able to fix the issue at it’s core by replacing old parts with new ones. That junkyard that the game starts you in had better quality control than your average Trabant factory. I know it sucks, but that’s just how it was.
there was an arguement with the publisher and the devs where the publisher (excalibur games) wanted to call the game done, while minskworks wanted to still work on it. they then procceded to literally release the game when it wasnt done fully completely. now excalibur still holds the rights to jalopy so minskworks cant do anything to the game or even make a sequel to it. its pretty much left to rot now
This video should had been called " imo i didn't like jalopy and heres why " and not recommend the game because hes own experience was not a good one. The game had decent reviews for an inexpensive game. And this game is a driving game , not a story game. It can be said that its less story more gameplay. It's not supposed to be a metal gear sold game where cutscenes are longer than the game. People would probably take this video different if the title was different.
i played the game on xbox and one time i got stuck in the middle of nowhere so i walked i think like 40 mins to the next city to sleep so my car would tp to the motel but all that was there in the morning was the engine components and another time the car just flung away from me out of nowhere and i was like 4-5 citys in and i just got so pissed i uninstalled the idea is good but the exaction is dog water and dev cant do anything about it sadly
God, this game was a disappointment. On paper, it seems awesome: I like the idea of tinkering about the car on a regular basis, trading things, managing the inventory and even driving through long stretches of practically nothing. But boy oh boy they managed to turn every aspect of it unwieldy, finicky busywork. It's not boring, it's infuriating. And the worst of all is the driving model. The Laika just doesn't handle like an automobile. It feels like a sinking bumpercar in a funfair hit by a flood. And the bugs. My progress got corrupted twice and I had to start the entire game from the very start. There's a great idea for a game here, but the execution fails even as a proof of concept.
Some people here said "skill issue" and they aren't really wrong. But didn't explain why. The game is a lot more fun when you realize the price of the goods change if they're banned or in short supply the prices go up and you can earn ridicolous money with that. Wine, meds (and coffee to a lesser extent) can make you a lot of money, and the upgraded parts can be more reliable. And from my experience longer more dangerous routes have more loot in them which makes the risk often worth it. My biggest issue with the game is the lack of polish, which is not the fault of the devs, but the pos publisher. The game never got truly finished.
That's actually a major part of how I completed my playthrough, so no skill issue thank you, but to your credit I didn't mention that in the video so you couldn't have known. I ran into a bunch of medical supplies at the start of it, which just turned out to be higher in price in the next town I was going to. That gave me a good cushion of money to work with for the rest of that run.
Its a good game, it just needs more content. The let down is the abandonment of the game. Im sure you wouldve had a completely different mindset if the developers never abandoned the game and added some things. I still play the game often, but its a shame nothings been added since 2019
these types of games are streamer games. only really fun when watching it being played with a lot of interaction and humor or when youre streaming it for/with a bunch of peoplewho then buy it themselves "because it was so fun watching it" .. and then when you play it yourself the vibe of that stream fades and youre left with a boring stale and flat game and then you never play it again.
for me, the game makes all the wrongs up with the VIBE Driving this old ass car, worrying that it may break, depending on finding stuff, you actually have to WORK hard for your car to run, and the music... mmmmhhhmmm thats just pure vibe

I like the way the car components are made. Its like an entry to my summer car.
there was an arguement with the publisher and the devs where the publisher (excalibur games) wanted to call the game done, while minskworks wanted to still work on it. they then procceded to literally release the game when it wasnt done fully completely. now excalibur still holds the rights to jalopy so minskworks cant do anything to the game or even make a sequel to it. its pretty much left to rot now
Other people call this game boring, but this game brings back soo many great memories for me
The newest jalopy is buggy including the speedo.Try the older version like 0.9
This video should had been called " imo i didn't like jalopy and heres why " and not recommend the game because hes own experience was not a good one. The game had decent reviews for an inexpensive game. And this game is a driving game , not a story game. It can be said that its less story more gameplay. It's not supposed to be a metal gear sold game where cutscenes are longer than the game. People would probably take this video different if the title was different.
MY SHIT CAR AINT HEARING BRUH
i played the game on xbox and one time i got stuck in the middle of nowhere so i walked i think like 40 mins to the next city to sleep so my car would tp to the motel but all that was there in the morning was the engine components and another time the car just flung away from me out of nowhere and i was like 4-5 citys in and i just got so pissed i uninstalled
the idea is good but the exaction is dog water and dev cant do anything about it sadly
There's a great idea for a game here, but the execution fails even as a proof of concept.
your opinion is not valid sir
One time i fell through the map in my car its a glitchy mess.
Es el mejor juego del mundo
Never got past the seconde border, bc I allways had some game breaking bugs :(
I actually quite like the game, I just wish it was still updated.
I could make a game more interesting than jalopy if I learn how to make one. I have huge ideas.
If you do, let me know and I'll review it ;)
Its a good game, it just needs more content. The let down is the abandonment of the game. Im sure you wouldve had a completely different mindset if the developers never abandoned the game and added some things. I still play the game often, but its a shame nothings been added since 2019
Each time I’ve tried this game I’ve ran into major bugs
these types of games are streamer games. only really fun when watching it being played with a lot of interaction and humor or when youre streaming it for/with a bunch of peoplewho then buy it themselves "because it was so fun watching it" .. and then when you play it yourself the vibe of that stream fades and youre left with a boring stale and flat game and then you never play it again.
its ok if your stoned, thats about it
this game is all about the car being absolute shit and testing how far your patience, determination and greedness can get you
OP never got the golden spanner and it shows.
They're rereleasing jalopy
I agree with the other dude skill issue
thank you

for me, the game makes all the wrongs up with the VIBE
Driving this old ass car, worrying that it may break, depending on finding stuff, you actually have to WORK hard for your car to run, and the music... mmmmhhhmmm
thats just pure vibe
