This report wasn’t meant to come out today and I explain why in the video.
I have done quite a few Virgin Trains videos and won’t be making any for a while, so I can focus on more variety next year (if you want to know my plans, look at the Community tab in my channel, or your notifications, I posted a post about them yesterday!).
Overall a fairly standard trip with Virgin West Coast. However, Virgin should be under no illusion that what they serve on board is NOT a dinner. The purpose of them serving hot meals on board is because their morning and evening trips cross breakfast time and dinner time. This gives busy people the opportunity to eat their meal on the train and not have to worry about getting up early for a breakfast, or make a dinner when they get home. There’s no way their tiny third of a fish with one potato and a few strips of root vegetables is a dinner! This was surprising because their breakfasts are quite sufficient.
As this was a night trip there’s not much to see outside so apologies if you feel this report is a bit light on content. However, starting next Sunday, new look Trip reports are coming in 4K HD, so sit tight and I hope you’re looking forward to 2018 as much as I am!

When I travel 1st class with Virgin west coast I have got lucky once or twice and have been given 2 dinners and cleared a whole bottle of wine. Think the stewardess must have liked me lol

nbkcq28 I like plenty of his films but the whole concept of the talking toilets is one of many reasons I can't stand Virgin Trains. They try far too hard to be zany and wacky, and it's incredibly annoying.

The talking toilet was a whole other level of creepy and annoying! And that "dinner" was more of a snack. I'm still shaking my head at myself because I read Stockport as Stockpot at first! Great video! I love your plane reviews, but now that I've discovered your train ones, I'm hooked!

I would be interested about the DFDS trip as we have sent numerous complaints, especially with regard to the carriage of pets but without getting a response. Hope you enjoyed the booze cruise!

Manchester Piccadilly -- I took the train from there to Huddersfield to visit a great aunt several times as a small boy in the fifties. The train shed was smokey and filled with chugging and snorting steam behemoths, impressive at my tender age then. You've not really taken a train ride unless its a steam train in the Pennine Tunnel to Huddersfield. Mother would urgently warn me and my brother to NEVER open the window in the tunnel. Stockport was our weekly shopping destination, and Wilmslow and Macclesfield were mystery towns south of where I lived. Not having a car and not having any need to go there meant I never once set foot in either town!

This is my favourite train journey.
Did a Pendolino trio from Edinburgh to Preston recently and was surprised by how small the food portions have become. But it’s the same on East Coast too. Great report.

Stockport! Wish video was during daylight. In the late 1960s, I spent a year as a Yank foreign student at Cheadle Hulme School (originally the Manchester Warehousemen and Clerks Orphan School) in Cheshire. To visit my granduncle in Birmingham, I'd have to catch the local north to Stockport in order to ride the express south. Still I enjoyed this trip report. Hau'oli Makahiki Hou! I was in the Manchester lounge, the staff said I could see the cab of a Pendolino (390131) It was amazing!
Too bad we didn't get to see the IJmuiden to Newcastle ferry crossing. I am very curious about that, as I will be taking it for my holidays with my family this year...

Nice presentation. I've dined a fair bit on Virgin and I do agree about ''dinner' It's not a dinner but more like a snack although I have always been happy with the offering on To./from Glasgow. and to Newcastle, both from MK or Peterborogh. The best food is in the morning and a full english breakfast. I wonder what wil change if/when Virgin loose the Franchise.

Last time I took Virgin 1st class was probably 7 or 8 years ago, London to Glasgow. The food and service were really good. Looks as if they've gone downhill.

Ref the comment on meal sizes....On Virgin east coast, its the same Paul! its more of a snack than a meal TBH. If only travelling to Pboro/Grantham you only get sandwiches.........unbelievable Jeff! Another great trip report.....
Great report! There is clearly some unfortunate marketing going on with the use of the word "Dinner." However, the staff seemed very friendly, respectful and attentive, and that's really all that matters for me. Cheers!

I was in 'shock and awe' mode with that toilet--does the seat really lock in place? Interesting that the voice is apparently American,speaking to UK residents.As for the food,don't complain,its free! I would imagine if asked politely,the onboard staff would give you seconds.As for the first class lounge,does the lounge attendant buzz you in or what? Don't know how lounge staff can check as to whether food and drink is being carried outside the facility--I'm just amazed how frequent trains run in the UK,I wish US citizens had that range of departures to choose from here--loved that quick scene of the container train zipping by after arrival
The voice is Will Ferrell, promoting a film. The food also isn’t free, it’s part of the reason you upgrade into First Class in the first place. If there was no food, the fare would be cheaper. Inclusive food tends to be poor - that’s why I prefer a model where you purchase your own, even in First Class. As long as the fare reflects it of course. The food is bound to be better and more satisfying if the staff have to present a bill to you after you’ve eaten it.

I agree with you paul the so called dinner was crap.back in the 70s when i was a waiter on the trains (man picc - euston it was silver service and you got soup a main course dessert and cheese and biscuits.
Needed to send a letter to mr Branson about the food and the toilet on the train 🚂

LNER have the best first class I think. The food and service is the best.
I went on Virgin Trains from Euston to Glasgow and vice versa in First Class back in November, it was a very nice journey and one I would like to do again, but yes I do remember finding Will Ferrell's voice annoying when I went to use the toilets, just let me piss in peace for crying out loud.. Otherwise I'd be more than happy to make that journey again :)

I love how you can totally just take dogs on British trains and nobody cares. Dogs on trains and dogs in pubs are two of my favorite British things, because you almost never see that here in the US.
The Manchester United fans would most likely use the tram side when playing at home. Or maybe the FC halt side.

gwr have the monoply from my town to london so first fares are just stupid! the best you can hope for is a cheap weekend upgrade, but i hate that i like to know im in first before i travel, love all tour work looking forward to 2018 on pauls trip reports!

Does anyone else think it’s ridiculous that Virgin charges around £70 extra (pp) for First Class when you can buy your own food for about £15?? In standard Class you still get a charging port (or at least the Virgin train I went on) and it says you get extra leg room but you get hardly any more?? It’s ridiculous the food portion you get on Virgin as well 😏
Anyway putting that aside Virgin trains are very good, high quality trains (apart from the prices)
On the continent, food is not complimentary (and often not even available!), but they still charge you up to 50 or 60% up of your standard journey... Then again, standard fares are not as high, even if you have less reductions for early bookings.
I have taken this very journey a few times in first class, a few years ago. Glad to see that the food is just as poor now as it was then. 🙄 (P.S. Love the Radiohead/Elbow-esque musical soundtrack.)

Maybe you could try Virgin East Coast in 1st class for a comparison. The seats are significantly better IMO
