If only 19-30 are allowed, do they retire at 30 with a shitty pension? (consequence of the low salary) or do they move on to other security jobs?

Years ago we took my five year old daughter to the Louvre. She kept going up to paintings saying “that’s a Leonardo, that’s a Donatello”. Everybody was looking at her as if she was some kind of prodigy. I kept saying, “ It’s turtles”.
Don’t let their clownish uniforms fool you. These guys are real Swiss soldiers. And yes, they do conceal automatics and gadgets like pepper spray underneath their uniforms
I like the uniforms. Yes, I'm a sucker for tradition. As you and Thoughty have pointed out, the colorful garb is mainly ceremonial and these guys are tough, serious soldiers who do a lot of their work dressed quite conventionally, and who can give you a very bad day if you mess with them. My question is why is their pay so low? I mean, given the cost of living these days, their salary is rather tiny. What don't I know? Do they also draw a Swiss government salary? That assumes that it is the Vatican that pays their base salary.
@@kennyj43cost of living doesn't matter here cause their costs of living ie food housing and basic amenities are covered along with the salary. So it's basically money for them to spend/save/invest
I recently found out that the reason renaissance mercenaries dressed in pieced-together bits of wildly clashing colors was advertising. Every time they prevailed in battle, they took a bit of their opponent's livery or flag to sew into their clothing to put their victory on display for the next guy who might hire them. The more motley the mercenary, the more deadly.
That actually makes sense💯🤞👍
Calling them clowns wearing pajamas is extremely insulting.

I'd say that Swiss neutrality is a testament to its ability to defend itself.... Nobody has wanted to bother climbing that mountain for the consequences it brings with it.
Just to get shot by a clown.
@@highcountrydelatite Apart from the richest gold reserve in Europe, I think.
@@highcountrydelatite I wasn't talking about mines. I was talking about banks.
the Swiss neutrality is actually based on our country's history of exporting soldiers. the leaders of the early Swiss communities swore unto each other to ... never fight each other and never swear fealty to or get into an alliance with one of the powers surrounding them (Habsburg, France, whoever) which might endanger the others... but to let each of them export their young men as mercenaries to the highest bidder. Which created literally centuries of a flourishing business. It was only by the middle of the 19th century that we stopped exporting our sons as cannon fodder (except for the Vatican) and just kept exporting weapons. to whomever payed the most. Unless they are actively at war because then we couldn't sell weapons to their enemy at the same time. That's the Swiss neutrality.
Apart from their courage and military prowess, their unshakable loyalty was always and is beyond question...

Mercenary outfits of the age also favored bright colors because they were easier to see on confused battlefields. Gunpowder weapons were starting to be used, and produced huge amounts of smoke, making knowing friend from foe even more difficult, which probably helped with the retention of the colorful uniforms through the centuries. And England's own red coat uniform would be adopted within the 16th century, give or take.

That line, a 5 yr old on acid! Absolutely killed me lmao!
“Strange, clown” outfits?….not at all. It reflects their history and tradition much like what the Pope and the Catholic Church is known for. It’s as unique and historical as the kilts of the Scottish highland regiments, the Beefeater guards at the Tower of London, or the white skirts and stockings of the Greek Evzones presidential guards in Athens. Their Renaissance-style colorful outfits, helmets and traditional weapons are for ceremonial purposes but they have completed the required Swiss army training. In their papal protection duties, they wear suits and carry modern firearms (pistols and sub-machine guns) similar to those of the Swiss army. So, beneath that colorful costume is a well-trained professional soldier who takes pride in the privilege of being a member of this historical military unit.
Sabaton made a great song about the sack of Rome called "The Last Stand".
I used to work security many years ago. During my time working there the pope came to the resort for some ceremony. He had his guards along with secret service and deputies from the county. The popes guards were pretty cool, and had their outfits for the ceremony but otherwise looked like normal police officers

10:37 that's Peters Basilica, the Castle of Sant'Angelo is the other way 😅
Came here to say exactly this!
Pope's earthly dominions were not always that small. Perugians' bid for independence from Papal rule in 1859 was put down in a bloody massacre. Upon Italy's unification troops had to be sent to protect the Swiss guard from vengeful Perugians.
The stand of the Swiss Guard against Charles V's forces reminds me of "The Last Stand of the 300", the famous Spartan engagement. Also, the global perception that Switzerland is a bit of a "softie" could also apply to today's Scandinavian countries, such as Sweden, Denmark & Norway. These countries are seen as peaceful, progressive & civilized. But they, as well as Switzerland, are sitting smugly in the knowledge that they produce some of the most fearsome warriors the world has ever seen - the Vikings. People like that KNOW they don't have to prove a THING. As Pres. Teddy Roosevelt said, "Walk softly & carry a big stick.". I'm sure His Holiness appreciates his OWN "Secret Service".
I live in switzerland and never heard someone say "we don't have to proof ourselves, we already did hundreds of years ago." and it would be kinda weird to do so.
Damn they produce Vikings in 2022? That's crazy.
_idiot_
You literally say "the last stand" and you don't make a sabaton reference. Weak.
Oh also, really? Hundreds of years ago is not today. I guess Americans can be smug in the knowledge that we were cowboys once.
Softie ?
I agree when it comes to the scandinavian countries, but when was switzerland ever considered a "softie" ?
Are you an american who mistakes sweden with switzerland ?
Switzerland was never considered soft, quite the opposite.
The fact that all the european countries bend their knees and do what brussel tells them, while switzerland did go its own way right from the get go as it always did, says it all.
@@MeanApollo In many anglo countries, Switzerland has the reputation of "absolute neutrality" because of a supposed fear of war. That's not exactly true- and as you know Sweden has actually gone longer without being in war, but that's the stereotype and why some might consider the Swiss to be "softies".
Then there's the opposite stereotype of "gun toting money laundering libertarians" which has become more popular recently. In fact the idea of the "offshore swiss bank account" is some mythical, untouchable, extralegal "shady business practice" which the "based swiss" allow because they're not weak, but drawn absolutely to the dollar.
So yeah, while the stereotype of the Swiss being softies might be wrong, it does exist and has for a while.
"How about colorful pyjamas?"

Holy crap! I literally mentioned the Swiss Guard to a friend just hours ago, and then I seen you have uploaded this. The stars have aligned!
Honestly, it must’ve been terrifying to see soldiers dressed up like that.
Imagine, hundreds of years ago the biggest man made construction you’ve ever seen was a farm house, maybe a local church.
But, you bring your newborn to the Vatican. It’s the first one to survive out of 5/6, so you must do all you can to get it blessed and protected.
You see a structure that’s closer to the size of a mountain, than any man made thing. You see stain glass windows, and paintings for the first time. Some of the paintings even look alive.
You’re wearing what you have. You never thought to make it look pretty, or add color. It just needed to work.
Not a single person you’ve ever seen wore the same thing either.
And then you see men, in matching outfits with bright colors. Colors that you only see in flowers and some vegetation. But that color quickly fades.
And these men are guarding that structure, that is too grand for mere humans to have made.
So scary isn’t the right word. Maybe intimidating.
So what Dan Brown wrote about the Swiss Guard uniforms is incorrect, like everything else he wrote.
“And fellow ninja turtle, Raphael.” Killed me 😂

Nah they protect pedos
They guard the rituals they do so the little boys can’t escape. They know what the pope and the others are doing in those catacombs. It’s been a while since the Vatican had a pope that actually worshipped God in it. I remember seeing a creepy video on another website of him reading a speech with a mysterious little girl next to him. The video did analysis saying that child was Satan in disguise.
Do not underestimate people who dress in medieval garb. It may look outdated in this era but a lot of people who wear medieval garb are actually very talented and experienced people and most likely understand how to use the weapons they have military or reenactment. I do medieval reenactment and I reenact the executioner and a lot of people who are not in the reenactment community have said unkind things about what I wear in reenactment. But for me it’s a way of life and I personally love it so much and take pride in my medieval skills and knowledge. I know this video is about the swiss guard and that’s not reenactment but an actual military. Honestly I can tell you in my case I have had people underestimate me and make fun of my medieval clothes so that part I relate with.
This was most interesting! I knew nothing of the Vaticans guard. I was at the Vatican, and I think our tour group missed that ! I love your channel and I think this was my favorite topic yet! Keep up the good work!!

Bros been making his videos for nearly a decade! Proud of you brother!
Hey Thoughty2, I love your videos! I've been watching them for years and I want to suggest a video for you. Have you ever heard about the blind prophet Vanga? Her predictions are estimated to be around 80% accurate. She lived relatively soon and predicted huge events like 9 11, and currently, her future predictions are quite popular. I really want to see what video you can make.
Vatican City at war:
"Why does those man look.............. Medieval?"
"That's there army man."
I wouldn't say the Strongest, but I'd definitely say the BEST. They're VERY good at what they do.

bishops might be even better at covering up pedophile scandals
Prior to the end of the Napoleonic Wars having a Swiss Mercenary Guard was a bit of a status symbol among European nobility. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars the European powers essentially said "Swiss Guard OP, ban from server" leading to Switzerland's modern-day neutrality. The Pope got to keep his Pontifical Swiss Guard because he was special.

While all you people are busy mocking their uniforms, these soldiers are carving you into sushi with their halberds.
...Or you know, shoot you with a gun. Halberds are great if you charge them with an horse but like any other weapon popular in the 1500s they haven't aged very well.
The style of the 1500s landsknechts were rather unique and the Swizz guard is frozen in time in looks but they are better trained then marines even if their clothes might look silly.
Their ceremonial parades is just a part of their duty. Switzerland also have the second highest number of guns per people after US.
@@loke6664 Dude, when you're facing 40 ambidextrous succubae with flaming pikes in their hands, you'd better be pretty darn certain that the naginata you pull out wasn't forged out of PVR cans by a guy named Jingo in Moose Jaw, Canada...
@@penultimateh766 Wait, why does ambidexterity factions in when they are wielding 2 handed weapons?
And when facing 40 anything you are in big trouble even if they wield butter knives.
I trained with swords, I can take out 2 opponents with worse training then me. Possibly 2 but that require that they are pretty bad.
Someone good can probably take out 5 opponents but anything above that require a plate armor and opponents who doesn't know how to take out someone wearing plate.
So I don't really see how your example make sense.
Halberd was a great weapon in the early 1500s when firearms still were relatively rare, expensive and unreliable while the plate armor technology was at it's top. An experienced soldier can pretty easily dismount anyone with a halberd and it can double as a spear even if it does that a bit worse since it weights more and can't be thrown.
Once the flintlock and wheellock became a thing they became obsolete just like the plate armor.
Not bad, not bad at all! You should do a video on the French Swiss Guard and the Battle of the Tuileries Palace on 10 August 1792.
I just love the fact that the Catholics loved the Halo theme so long ago.
"Uńion disputes have gotten a lot less dramaticin the past 500 years, have'nt they?"Great joke,Aaran.,made me laugh all morning.Cheers.

“Bagsy I’ll be one of the 42 to ferry the Pope to safety!
(Not one of the ones giving their lives to buy some time).”
Not sure I’d be really cut out for that job.
The marked building is not Castel Sant’Angelo, is Saint Peter’s Basilica, the castle is on the other side of the Passetto di Borgo. The vídeo is very well done!
"Fellow ninja turtle". LOL
00:02 thought he was gonna say pope. that would be hilarious. This comment is sponsored by the Pope
4:59 Switzerland to Rome, checked, 829,8 km.
Four months = 120 + days. Dec and Oct had 31, so 122 days.
6.8 km a day, I guess marching 200 together is slower than marching individually.
"one standard issue penis"
what if it isn't standard issue? I mean, if it is exceptionally large or small, does that mean you're out?
This is a good video, really mesmerizing. Never underestimate the Swiss Guard tho, they seem like colorful people, but they are as lethal as modern soldiers.
The Swiss guard use a special style of evasive maneuver called the Swiss roll.
