This was great, but... If you ever saw Popper live, you know he was seriously holding back here to let Akroyd shine. Which he did. I've been a musician for 50 yrs, and some of the best I've ever seen...are the ones who make others look good. Good work by both here.
Dan Aykroyd is a good harmonica player! But you're right he's no John popper on the harmonica... But then again Dan Aykroyd ain't afraid of no ghost lol.
I think you are right about this. There are harmonica players which Dan aykroyd is a great harmonica player. Then, there is John Popper. So, for him to hold back was very classy.
Best part about this performance: Aykroyd and Popper having fun. These guys have great respect for each other and it shows. Too bad John couldn't be there to see just how many people he and Dan inspired with their SNL band.
Popper credits Dan (Elwood) as one of his inspirations for picking up the Harmonica or (harp) as many blues musicians call it. Grew up on the Blue's Brother's, and also picked up the harp because of Dan. Love this clip.
John Popper reflecting on this: I remember the intro Elwood gave me that night..."...a man who can make 4 inches of tin, plastic&brass sound like a symphony!!"....I got tunnel vision when he said that...I was outside myself...He's really why I first put a harp in my hand...&w/in 13 years of hearing him,I was playing w/him...😎
You know that feeling, when you watch something great that you thoroughly enjoyed but it's over. Then you rush to the comments to prolong that feeling just a little bit longer by reading the comments and sharing the experience together. Yeah it doesn't happen often for me, but this sure did it. Amazing talent up on that stage man. The way John Popper was looking at dan Aykroyd letting him shine was beautiful to watch.
😄 I began reading your comment in a thought it was going to say “…that feeling you get when the band hits that groove; the people are dancin', and shoutin', and swayin'; and the house is rockin'!” 🫶👍
Dan Aykroyd is certainly impressive on harmonica, but John Popper definitely holds the crown. You can tell both guys are just enjoying jamming out, and anyone who has seriously listened to John play knows he held back throughout most of this performance so as not to outshine Dan too much. Class act
Can't believe I found this. Was in the crowd for this show. Such a night...good times. Ran into Dan outside walking to the show unaware of what was in-store. Thanks for posting this...also worth noting that Popper credited Dan as inspiration for him picking up the harmonica before welcoming him to the stage.
Blues Traveler doesn't get enough credit, they have played with some of the greatest of all time not including Dan Aykroyd. If you haven't got a chance go and check out some of their music, it's really good.
I read a comment saying this was a Jimi Hendrix song. Hendrix covered this song and played the hell out of it, but B.B. King first released this in 1964. And played the hell out of. Saw B.B. play last year and he still rocks it at 87!!! Truly the King!
If you liked this video, check out The Blues Brothers concert live at The Winterland ballroom in San Francisco. The full concert is on UA-cam. It's the original band with John Belushi and Paul Schaffer from The letterman show on piano. Great music while in their prime.
It always drives me crazy how much Dan shortchanges his harp-blowin' abilities. Yeah, Johnny can play faster (& he is excellent, no doubt about that), but not every song needs it to be fast, & Dan can blow a mighty fine harp & go decently fast when he has to.
I believe that this style of music can cross boundaries of class and believe and the world would be a better place if the politicians of the world would listen to some of this before they sit down and decide our future,,,,,
Rarely is a truly accomplished person accomplished in only one way, since the discipline required to accomplish is the same in any field. I am reminded of Huey Lewis, who said he was surprised by how wonderful Gweneth Paltro's singing voice is, in the making of the movie "Duets". And, for that matter, when John Goodman sang along with Blues Traveler in an episode of "Roseanne".
now that was the best dang harmonica do duet I have ever seen specially if you have Blues veteran Dan Aykroyd helping out with an equally good Johnny popper it's always nice for Dan Aykroyd to appear and different rhythm and blues groups
@@craighargrave5297 Agreed! I love Dan Aykroyd, but this was just a fun jam. Truth be known, I believe Popper was doing what a true musician would do who isn't on an ego trip. He was "blending" and being respectful to Aykroyd....and just having a good time!! I never heard anyone who can whale on a harmonica like John Popper!
This aired live back when I was in college, when my fraternity was having our spring house party in Myrtle Beach. Some of us crowded around a TV to watch it and were blown away. Good memories! Met John about 10 years later; great guy and a great band. Buy their latest album!
This was great, but...

definately true, but you still gotta admit that Akroyd is a damn good player and can hold his own
Dan Aykroyd is a good harmonica player!
Exactly! Akroyd was his IDOL!
Popper is very emotional and when he "has a day", just keep watching and listening!
This was at HOB New Orleans btw...
Best part about this performance: Aykroyd and Popper having fun. These guys have great respect for each other and it shows. Too bad John couldn't be there to see just how many people he and Dan inspired with their SNL band.
If you'd ask Dan Aykroyd, he would tell you James was there that night.
John and Dan ONE MORE TIME BABY!!!
Popper was so GRACIOUS to his idol :)
I for one had no idea that Akroyd was that talented. Man he can hold his own with the best of them!
He did it for years! THe Blues Brothers was not a fake/joke band
If you dont know Dan Akroid was
"Elwood Blues" you're were born after the Blues Brothers
MR Elwood Blues. Laying it DOWN!!
Popper credits Dan (Elwood) as one of his inspirations for picking up the Harmonica or (harp) as many blues musicians call it. Grew up on the Blue's Brother's, and also picked up the harp because of Dan. Love this clip.
I grew up watching the blues brothers and didn't hear any evidence of Dan Akryodes virtuosity until watching this video
Dan Akroid is VERY talented.....plays a mean harmonica.......I really miss John Baluchi....they were great together
John Popper reflecting on this:
I remember the intro Elwood gave me that night..."...a man who can make 4 inches of tin, plastic&brass sound like a symphony!!"....I got tunnel vision when he said that...I was outside myself...He's really why I first put a harp in my hand...&w/in 13 years of hearing him,I was playing w/him...😎
Thanks for sharing. They weren't called Blues Traveler for nothing.
Absolutely love this! Dan/Elwood is the reason I (try to) play harmonica! I’m no John Popper though, more like a noise polluter in comparison!
The Elwood Shuffle... iconic.
That lady's and gentleman is Elwood Blues !!
Ladies
Still miss Jake

@@HM2SGT It very well could have! Cause your description is dead on accurate. Cheers!
Surprised I never saw this before. Excellent.
Ahh, the 90's were so great! If only we realized how good we had it then.
The 80's would like to have a word with you, but you'll have to try back later.
They are out, and their ain't any cellphones handy just yet.
No smart phones or social media!
Whoa, Dan Aykroyd and John Popper are killer. Big blues brothers.
This is still one of the most energetic performances of all time. I’m surprise the house of blues is still standing after this song.
So cool!
Dan Aykroyd is certainly impressive on harmonica, but John Popper definitely holds the crown. You can tell both guys are just enjoying jamming out, and anyone who has seriously listened to John play knows he held back throughout most of this performance so as not to outshine Dan too much. Class act
I don’t think he held back. In fact, I think it would’ve been disrespectful to hold back.
I think he did a little so it works and let elwood shine. Beautiful
Dan was John's influence and motivation to play harmonica in the first place
Popper is the GOAT
Cool to see this clip with him and Aykroyd
a grammy award winning artist once told me 'sometimes its more about the hustle than the talent"...dan works the stage and the crowd. nice vid
-Man, I Love Dan!
Dan is the man he is the truth a true blues man
Upset to not see Mighty Mack here, Jake and Elwood had the true passion! Long live the true blues!
It's not many that can stand up there and hold their own with John. I tip my hat Mr. Blues
Dan the man!🎷
Interesting that they got their name, the blues traveler, from Gozer the traveler on Ghostbusters.
Elwood is more classic in his style of playing, but Blues Traveler is bringing in some new style solo's. Brill combination!
Dan is possibly the only celebrity I
would absolutely love to have a few drinks with.
Two iconic Blues musician's together on stage. Two iconic Bluesharp player havin fun! Just great!
I absolutely love, love Dan Akriod. He is the best!!!
That rocked my face off. Goodbye face.
For some reason, I read that in the voice of that rock guy from Thor: Ragnarok.
When face met rock.
This is REAL music
THe Blues Brothers are why we have Blues Traveler, this is amazing.
Can't believe I found this. Was in the crowd for this show. Such a night...good times. Ran into Dan outside walking to the show unaware of what was in-store. There are no words for how awesome this is. Oh my fucking god. And I had no idea Aykroyd could play like that! DAAAMN!!!
Blues Traveler doesn't get enough credit, they have played with some of the greatest of all time not including Dan Aykroyd. If you haven't got a chance go and check out some of their music, it's really good.
Blues Traveler is a group of phenomenal musicians. Some of the best out there.
Have been a big fan of Bues Traveller since i saw them at the HORDE fest in the summer of 1994, or could have been 1996. either way they freakin rock.
Been a fan for decades; phenomenal music!
What do you mean? They’ve won Grammys, world tours, countless awards shows, etc… they literally couldn’t receive any more credit.
The Red Rock Dvd concert is outstanding
This is so awesome it's almost ridiculous!
And that ain't no overstatment brother. What a moment, made me feel like a kid again.
You got to love it
Anybody who can play and sing the blues like that and do the movie conehead is definitely an acid freak
Love Blues Traveler.
Absolutely some of the best harmonica playing on the planet.
Elwood Blues is such a legend!!
"THESE ARE GOOD MEN!!! GOOD MEN RIGHT HERE!!"You gotdamn rightthese are good men!!!!
This fabulous tune has got me moving....absolutely loved it ✌️
Great collaboration of fine Musicians.
The early-mid 90's were awesome.
ThrawnTheater that was the last time we had real music.
Five Stars.
Man Dan Aykroyd you'd the man. Blue Traveler poppin !!!!
How the F am I only finding this 18 years after the fact? How awesome is this?!
BEST CLIP EVER L0L CRAZY
Awesome!! Great harmonica "battles"
I am watching this for the first time and my MIND IS FUCKING BLOWN AWAY.
Popper is, in my estimation, a virtuoso on that harp... Single greatest blues harp player alive today, if not of all time.
That's a bold statement, my friend.
I do ADORE some Popper, but I will put Toots Thielemans up in this rarified air as well.
I read a comment saying this was a Jimi Hendrix song. Hendrix covered this song and played the hell out of it, but B.B. King first released this in 1964. And played the hell out of. Saw B.B. play last year and he still rocks it at 87!!! Truly the King!
Damn it is so good to hear from Elwood again! Cuz that man can really play a harp! RIP Johnny
Dan Aykroyd is the man ! And so is John Popper ! Play that thing !
I would love to see them both live..this is the best..Dan's got some moves and yes the blues..nice!!!
This is literally one of the coolest things ive ever seen/listened too!
Aykroyds laugh at 5:26 ....Awesome

Yea ,& Popper got tickled , you could tell.
..and theclook popper gives hin directly after lol
Wow! What a dream team, and Popper's a real class act, letting Akroyd shine during the dueling harmonicas.
holy shit i have to watch blues brothers again now...
Me too. I thought Aykroyd was just a blues fan but he really rocked it with Popper 20 years ago.
+Mal Milligan

Aicrojd il blues band che spettacolo in concerto con i suoi amici Chicago
Brilliant!. Think Dan should have gone pro!... 🤣 Great sound from all of them.....
These guys can freakin' jam! and what's more they are clearly having fun on stage...
It always drives me crazy how much Dan shortchanges his harp-blowin' abilities.
Yeah, Johnny can play faster (& he is excellent, no doubt about that), but not every song needs it to be fast, & Dan can blow a mighty fine harp & go decently fast when he has to.

Damn! Aykroyd's got chops!
I believe that this style of music can cross boundaries of class and believe and the world would be a better place if the politicians of the world would listen to some of this before they sit down and decide our future,,,,,
dam great music love the harmonicas shit you go dan akroyd wow
This duo makes a harp section that could turn goat piss into gasoline. (If you get it you get it.)

Jesus...Dan and Popper are GOOD together...Go Danny!!!
Nope Dan and Belushi are GOOD together.
Gawd dont be such a party pooper...
Well duh, it’s his IDOL
now that was the best dang harmonica do duet I have ever seen specially if you have Blues veteran Dan Aykroyd helping out with an equally good Johnny popper it's always nice for Dan Aykroyd to appear and different rhythm and blues groups
he played all his own parts in the blues brothers
I wouldn’t go that far about “equally good” Popper is in another league in terms of harmonica skills. But yeah they are good together.
@@craighargrave5297 Agreed! I love Dan Aykroyd, but this was just a fun jam. Truth be known, I believe Popper was doing what a true musician would do who isn't on an ego trip. John Popper and Elwood on the Harmonica Blues at it's finest. RIP John Belushi
AMAZING 🔥🔥🔥🔥
❤ blues brother
