  • Join me for a scenic drive from my hometown of Scarborough to the resort of Filey. It was a beautiful sunny morning to visit these two seaside towns on the North Yorkshire Coast of England.
I started at Scarborugh's North Bay, and drove around Marine Drive to the South Bay. I then took the coast road to Filey, Scarbrough's sleepy neighbour.

    SCARBOROUGH
Scarborough is a seaside resort on the North Yorkshire coast. The town is divided by a rocky headland, with the South Bay and the North Bay on either side, each offering its unique charm.
The South Bay is the more commercial area, home to the bustling harbour, arcades, a long sandy beach, and the iconic Scarborough Spa.
In contrast, the North Bay provides a more tranquil setting, with its wide beaches, Peasholm Park, and the North Bay Railway, ideal for those looking to spend quiet time by the sea.
The town's history is vividly displayed at the Scarborough Castle, which dates back to the 12th century and offers panoramic coastline views.
The town is situated on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, providing easy access to miles of stunning countryside and walking trails. For example, the Cleveland Way National Trail offers breathtaking cliff-top walks starting from Scarborough, presenting an excellent opportunity for outdoor exploration.
Culturally, Scarborough is vibrant and diverse. The Stephen Joseph Theatre, known for premiering the works of the famous playwright Alan Ayckbourn, is a cornerstone of the town's cultural offerings.
Scarborough's appeal is further enhanced by its culinary scene, which includes traditional fish and chips shops along the seafront and fine-dining restaurants offering fresh, locally sourced seafood.
    NORTH YORKSHIRE COAST
North Yorkshire’s coastline is a stretch of natural beauty that spans from the Tees estuary to the Flamborough Headland. This part of England is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, long sandy beaches, and picturesque seaside towns and villages.
The coastline is home to the North York Moors National Park, where the moorland meets the sea, creating a landscape of rugged beauty that is both tranquil and awe-inspiring.
The area is dotted with historic sites, including the ruins of Whitby Abbey, and picturesque villages, such as Robin Hood’s Bay, with tightly packed houses tumbling down to the sea.
The coastline is also celebrated for its natural wonders, such as the Bempton Cliffs, a breeding ground for seabirds, including puffins and gannets, offering spectacular birdwatching opportunities.
The area's geological features, including striking cliffs, caves, and fossil-rich beaches, make it a fascinating destination for geologists and fossil hunters.
Meanwhile, the coastal villages and towns, with their unique character and history, provide a deep sense of place and history.
