Stick Trick, Turtles drummer, Johny Barbata

- This video was intended only as a “first draft” for an idea I had to show a cool Johny Barbata stick trick. I learned it from watching a 1967 video of The Turtles performing ”Happy Together.” Often I will shoot a rough first to see what might work and then re-shoot the final. This one needs some work to tighten it up, the focal plane is not right and the audio is thin because it was recorded using the built-in camera mic. But it conveys the message intended, I would not change the explanation, and I am feeling too lazy to do it over. So here it is, flawed and imperfect but I hope good enough for you to enjoy learning this fun stick trick. Thank you.
R.I.P. Mr. Barbata. A magnificent genius.
Nice! My 3 favorite all time drummers are Hal Blaine, Johnny Barbata, and Bobby Elliott of the Hollies....
No love for Dino Danelli?
Just kidding. I've always liked Bobby Elliot also.
A couple of my other top favorites are Garry Peterson and Doug Clifford.
Dear Mr. Flack, What a drummer you are, I never seen anything that clean before, great, great job...
That's exactly it. I'm not a drummer (I can't even walk and chew gum at the same time), but I always enjoyed watching Barbata's stick tricks.
Sugar foot do some that are cool to watch, I think he do it when he gets featured on drumeo
Give it a look if u wants
I saw the turtles at the Target Ballroom in Burien in 1966...Johny's drum solo was memorable.
I bet that was great!
Dino Denelli and Barbata, my fave two drummers,
Dino was always a favorite of mine too.
There's a fantastic organization here in my home state, the All Ohio State Fair Band, and without delving to much into it's history, this stick trick has been done by the drumlines there for years upon years.
And funnily enough, last year, the All Ohio State Fair Youth Choir, of which I am a member, performed Happy Together. It was one of our male feature pieces, super fun to sing.
That’s great! Many thanks
SLICK - STICK - TRICK ......... THANKS DUDE !
Totally cool. Thanks
Very nicely done!
Hey Ed, that's really slick man. I'm challenged when it comes to stick tricks. Thanks for sharing.
That is cool!!
Ed, I have been watching your videos for quite some time now and I must say that your playing style is second to none.Your Bobby Thompson grip is amazing to say the least. Lots of power in your strokes. I am learning to use that grip also.I have to mention also that I love your Rogers drums. I have a 1963/64 Rogers 5 piece red sparkle set that I got when I was in Jr.High School. Keep up the great work and thank you for your inspiration. One last comment........Your Valentines gift was great!!
Thank you Kyle. You just can't beat those vintage Rogers drums. Oh wait, yes you can beat on them (you know what I mean.)
Way cool. Hmm I love turtles!!
Wonderful and charming video! Thank you for the stick trick. Nice idea with the mesh heads and low volume cymbals...but I would try flowers and a bottle of wine next valentines!!! 😄😄😄 Cheers!
Now you tell me about the flowers and wine! Haaa! I made it up to her, did not have to sleep on the sofa.
You make that look so easy! Thank you!
That's pretty cool Beavis
that was straight up awesome. thanks. Im gonna try it out, but
Im gonna wear some safety goggles as Im getting a bit old. rock on. LoL
Nice
That's great Ed. Thank you!
def one of my fav drummers
Top shelf. Much respect ✊
“ I would love to see a drummer cover Johnny Barbata’s performance on drums of the song “Me About You”. This song is also on the 1967 ‘Happy Together album’ . It is such a great track”.
That is a good song. I love the Turtles!
sweet stick trick!
Fab. Can you do the trick which Gene Krupa used to do which was to hold one stick on the sbare & do a roll on it with the other stick
Thanks, Simon. I'm not sure but you might be talking about a stick trick called "walking the dog."
Good job. On the Johnny video, he actually drops the stick and picks up a new stick without missing a beat. As good a drummer as he is, it bothers me, that he was not faithful to the Turtles and did not remain with the group. He could have written songs for them, as he does with his wife now. Many drummers write music and are the leaders of their group.
Awesome Ed!
Thanks Rob!
Nice video
Ed. I had to subscribe after your humorous quip. I got those same cymbals for my wife too! Your right, it doesn’t work.
Cool trick, not for me though. I’ll show it to my students. Thanks.
Live and learn, right?
For entertainment try looking up "Steve Moore the Mad Drummer". Check out his antics.
thats amazing, Im not a drummer but thats cooooooool!
Thanks!
Johny Barbata is so underrated
trying to find a drummer that can play this stuff nowadays is near impossible, my project has been trying drummers and everyone want to be Bonham, Peart or Dave Grohl, banging and flailing away on the crash and ride lol, wheres the love for Ringo, Watts, or even Hal Blaine!! Drummers under 35 have no idea
nice
Can you break down how to do the twirl? My stick twirl is terrible.
Could you explain “spin”, please ? It happens so fast that I can’t follow it !
I wish that I could just do that spin ! 🙄
Buahahaha.. "....no.... no, it's not a good Valentine's gift".
0:30 I heard 4 way street but I didn't know who the drummer was. Joey Covington was the second drummer in the Jefferson Airplane he was suing the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame because they didn't induct him I asked DJ Norm N. Night if he was suing you he laughed I told another DJ Bob Brainenen from FMU and he said do you know what Joey Covington looks like a burned out candle
show the spin
I hope your wife didn't keep you in the doghouse for long😂❤
Its Happy Together not So Happy Together its Bar Bay Ta not Bar Bah Ta
Thanks, if I could afford an editor, you'd be hired!
Art Blakey would get fancy at Newport by crossing his wrists over each other
Trap for young players . . . Valentine's Day and drums don't mix. :-(
Now you tell me, lol!
