I Drove A Toyota Camry Across THREE US States To See Why It's Been The Best Selling Car For 25 Years

  • The Camry has been a best seller in the US for the past 25 years, only in 2001 did it lose to the Honda Accord. The thing is, the Camry seems to have a reputation of being boring. Maybe that's only natural when you see so many on the road. Well to find out, I drove one I picked up on Turo across Florida, Georgia and South Caroline to see what all the fuss (or lack of) is about.

I would love one, the Camry is a bulletproof car that can go on forever. With even minimal servicing this car will last forever...

Great video as always Luke, my best friend has one of the few XV70 Toyota Camrys which were sold in the UK. He loves it and I can absolutely see why, I think it's a really nice car. It's a shame more weren't sold here, but considering current trends, I can see why they've unfortunately not been a popular seller

It’s a shame because I’d like to see more of them on the UK roads.

Great video Luke. I've been tempted by an imported Vellfire or Alphard in the UK. I don't do many miles and having a car so versatile and reliable seems really appealing.

I know exactly what you mean. I was looking at how versatile the minivans (Dodge Caravan) is as my friend has one. It’s quite impressive. Put some Toyota reliability into the mix and you’ve probably got all the car you’ll ever need.

Three entire states ?! For those of us who live here, that's just a warm up for a long road trip 😜.
Just kidding: it's great to hear another perspective. They really are excellent, comfortable and ultrareliable cruisers (if unremarkable) that will easily last 200-300K miles with routine maintenance. Ask me how I know - we have three in the family currently. Cheers!

Hahah it always amuses me about the different sense of scales Brits and American’s have. Most Brits think 2 hours is a long trip whereas it’s just around the corner for most Americans 😂 that being said, your roads are much better suited to long distance cruising.

I'm sure the Camry is one of the first cars you can get on the original Gran Turismo, along with the Demio ASpec.

I remember the Demio but not the Camry unfortunately. Wasn’t the Demio the first car you used for the first licence test? I still have my copy with my PS1 from 1997.

In my mind, in Europe the problem with these is that they are too expensive. They currently start at around 40k euros whereas the Avensis they replaced used to be around 20k. At this price they don't compete anymore with the Passat, the Mondeo and the Insignia as they should, but with cars like the Giulia, the 3 series and the C class.

The new camry is a close match to a lexus ES.

That’s a real shame. Yeah it shouldn’t be competing at that price. It’s certainly more of a competitor to a Passat or Mondeo.

I believe the UK-market version of this is the Avensis? They’re great saloons as well. I studied in Dublin and saw quite a few of them as taxis.

The problem with it is mpg. The usual engine in these is a V6 petrol. Terrible economy, especially in a UK city.

This was a Turbo 4 cylinder. I got 49 MPG (imperial) over 800 miles.
