I really like and enjoy your tying videos. When I first started tying around 10 years ago the premise was “simple but effective”. Sometimes I feel like we have gotten away from that as there seems to be a new material marketed every week now. When it comes to streamers I got sucked into the fancy patterns and the “bigger is better” frame of mind for a while as I think a lot of us did. For a while now I’ve been going back to a lot of my simple patterns in smaller profiles and in my local fisheries, they seem to be more effective. Videos like yours, Kelly’s, and some of the stuff Russ did are a breath of fresh air in the social media generation where everyone just seems to be slapping a material on a hook for no reason. With streamers I’ve always felt like every material needs to have a function or it’s a waste. Keep em coming! I enjoy the fishing videos as well!
Thanks Mark. Hard to sell all that new fancy stuff if you keep it simple. That being said, my next 2 tying videos are big flies and a little fancier. I think the thing Russ, Kelly and I have in common is that we all guided a lot and understand that a fly needs to be fish able (casting and retrieving) for an average client to be worth anything
Cool egg yarn head! I'm really enjoying the rescent tying videos of the smaller stuff. Thanks for sharing them. I, too, have lost some bigger fish to the smaller hook theory. So whenever possible I want the bigger hooks as well. You're right. The big ones do eat the small stuff, too. Very much more, about presentation over size here. Thanks again for ALL the new videos. They are great! Would you have a favorite small crayfish pattern you might be willing to share. I see lots of small parts when pumping bellies. Thanks again Alex!
I'm gonna work on keeping em going. I've got some bigger streamers and a couple of boat fishing videos up next. As fas as a crayfish pattern, I really don't. I always thought they ate the pats rubber leg and jj special for it, and I see Montana Fly Co is now tying a jig jj special, which would probably be perfect. Another one the guys run for smallmouth in the Ozarks is the hada Creek crawler. Might check those 2 out.
Im really enjoying these videos, learned so much from the older ones, and so glad you're having a good time making new ones, Im learning a ton once again, so thank you so much! What are the differences in the B10s vs TP shred hooks and why you like one over the other? is a size 2 B10s bigger or smaller than a size 2 ahrex TP? Thanks in advance and if too annoying of a question, please feel free to ignore!
I go back and forth between the two. A lot of it depends where I'm fishing. If I'm expecting the upper end to be 21 or less I don't mind the smaller gap on the tp. If I'm in an area with a more 22in and bigger fish, I typically prefer the bigger gap the B10S provides. A lot of times I'll still use the tp for marabou tails on bigger flies because it seems like the marabou fouls less on the straight shank vs the stinger hook bend. I actually tie a bunch of patterns on different hook platforms depending on where I'm fishing. I might just he paranoid but I do find the bigger hook gap works better on big fish but they do damage smaller fish.
Good stuff Alex, I really enjoy the material you are putting out. Question: you are tying a lot of these small or low, clear water flies in solid colors...do you find you prefer that over two-toned or using variagated/barred materials? or it doesnt matter?
Not necessarily, im typically just filling holes in my box. I run a lot of olive/yellow, olive/white, olive/ginger, yellow/tan, gray/white, chat/white, brown/tan....and the list goes on.
@@alexlafkasfishing I noticed you are tying a lot on the Ahrex Trout Predator. Do you prefer the standard over the Trout Predator light? Do you find the TP vs TP light effects the action of your flies or your ability to hook fish?
Why just not just palmer the marabou at the end to cover more of the body? Tie the larger end of the marabou and tie off with the shorter end and get some taper out of it? Or just whatever! 😆
I do that with sculpin patterns at times, but small minnows really look like nothing in the water. Could probably even have less material and it might work better
that's an old bag of dubbing right there! I'm a more flash than less type of tyer because most of my fish are rainbows or brookies.....I don't have many weary browns that'll get turned off (and the ones I do fish over I just euro nymph) because they are wild and don't get very big compared to Michigan rainbows love flash- the best fly i ever fished growing up when I was just starting ff was this minnow from cabelas catalogue that was like a ice dub flash baitfish in this hideos silver and almost metalic blue. It was heavy for a trout fly- but they couldn't stay off of this thing. We were kids so between me and my fishing buddy we maybe had 2 of these things....and we ended up fishing them hard and losing them. Can't even find a picture of this fly anymore....

Agree- I like that your bring a workmen’s approach to your channel. I’d rather have a full box. Good stuff Alex
Great name for the trout candy variant 👌🏼 💯
I told a 25 year old kid the name, and he had no clue
Another great simplw pattern. Thanks Alex. Enjoying these videos.
I live by simple! Thx
Great pattern and you explain it great. Thanks for taking the time to do this
Thanks!
Awesome, love it.
Good to hear! I tend to tie out of need, and I needed a fly just bigger than a black ghost smaller than a peanut envy. This worked and does work
@alexlafkasfly-fishing9088 Fantastic. All killer, no filler. I personally enjoy tying, however I'll take exploring and fishing first every time.
Nice productive fly now that’s worth my time duplicating thank you good work
I tend not to overthink it

I'm not sure I've used the trout predator light yet. I do like the Aberdeen predator but I'm not sure how small they make them
Great looking fly m8.
Have you ever used the Hareline Ice fur or Lazer hair " upfront" on these???
I haven't. I'm still using stuff I've got tucked in my drawers from years ago. Not sure if I'm cheap or just lazy
