  • Most folks don't realize that Arizona has a fantastic environment for growing grapes. There are several varieties that do well here and today we're starting our Zinfandel harvest. We're also pruning and harvesting our first round of Moringa leaves!

    Thank you for showing the difference in the grapes, I did not know that.

      It can vary a bit with the wine grapes as some of the clusters are not quite as tight, but generally speaking that is a pretty easy way to tell.

    Thanks for sharing about the grape differences. I’ve also experienced that the seeds in wine grapes seem to be much larger. What do you do with the blended Morimga leaves? Also glad to see the working cats get lots of TLC too!

      Very true, the seeds are MUCH larger than your seeded table grapes. We use the moringa in our morning smoothies. It mixes well and the taste is pretty mild for a green like that.

    Kind sir: I started some moringa in air pots 4 week ago. Now I am already seeing roots getting air pruned at the bottom. This is good. I will care for them through winter. And I am determined to get moringa here in SoCal 9b. In future, I will use variety of things: heat, Xmas lights, burlap. Etc.

      You should be good in 9b, which is the same as our Zone here. You said SoCal, so I assume inland desert somewhere maybe? If so and you have any issues with those transplants, I would encourage you to direct seed a few next Summer. That's worked out really well for us here.

    If it wasn't for the orchards, and all the other green things you have growing that place would look like a wasteland . I admire your hard work and the amount of production you have there. The name of your farm is very fitting. Thanks for sharing with us.

    This farm has been going on this site for about 4 or so years now. Seems to be a lot more things to do year by year, are some of the earlier jobs taking care of themselves now? Things like the trees you planted when you moved in look like they require less monitoring now they are growing.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm

      I overall workload is much lower, because we have very few time intensive projects. The day to day is pretty much the same, but is affected by the season. For example, when we have meat pigs, meat chickens and Thanksgiving turkeys on the farm there is a lot more to do each day.

    I'm in Joshua Tree, CA (Hi Desert above PS) & trying to survive the heat. The tendrils of my grapes end up being fried. How come yours don't seem affected by the searing sun? Love watching your content & have learned so much👍

    • @paulm965
      @paulm965 Місяць тому +1

      Same question here. I've got a Zin growing full sun and around this time of year, the leaves definitely start to look scorched. Also, I saw you had one cluster bagged in one of your other videos, but are you not getting a ton of bird pressure on those gorgeous looking wine grapes?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  Місяць тому +1

      This time of year we do have some of the leaves that are crisping up a bit which is completely normal. That's typically what happens at the end of the harvest when the tree is no longer pushing as much sap to harvest grapes. As long as you're not seeing the tips of the branches burn and die back you're ok. How old are your vines?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  Місяць тому +1

      Paul, the only grapes that tend to get attacked by birds around here are the table grapes. For some reason the birds don't do near as much damage to the wine grapes. I can only assume it's the higher tannin content in the skins which can make them a little bitter.

    What would a wine taste like if you used table grapes instead of wine grapes? Would it taste different?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  Місяць тому +1

      We make wine from all of our grapes and the only major difference we can tell is the higher tannin in the red wine grapes. It makes a much darker wine.

    Those few glimpses of the figs..... sigh. I'm still trying to get the hang of the right amount of water to help the figs ripen well rather than the dry leathery things they tend to be right now. I can tell by the look when they are going into ripening, but they seem to dry out as they go. Maybe its just too hot right now? Thoughts?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  Місяць тому

      The extreme dry heat does play havoc with that ripening. Without the monsoon moisture it's really hit or miss with them. Many of ours are doing the exact same thing this year.

  • @1bakerblue

    Question do you check the sugar of the grapes before you harvest them. Or do you just go by color?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  Місяць тому

      We will actually be covering this a bit in next week's vlog, but it's typically by color and we also watch for wilting on the grapes. Especially these later varieties when we don't get any monsoon moisture.
