    Dusty is the greatest female singer I've ever heard. The emotions she brings into her singing is on par with Roy Orbison. It's so believable. You can feel it. The pain, the hope and joy. Beautiful.

    I'm 67 now, Thank You Universe, and I can remember the first time I saw Dusty on TV as a 12 year old boy in 1964 as though it was last night. I'll tell you honestly, I was simply mesmerized. Transfixed. And I still am. She's like Jeff Beck in that that there's two categories of female singers... 1) Dusty Springfield and 2) Everybody Else.

      She truly admired Motown. Brought acts over around 1965 to her show and introduced them to British audiences, who embraced them. I think Dusty as a bit early for positive changes happening later, when females were "allowed" or more accepted singing all kinds of music, not just pop (pop is fine, just sayin') Dusty used influences and her own smarts to be Better.

    A really great assessment of Dusty's singing and how she sang. However every syllable she sang had to blend into the music and mood of the song, which she would work on to make it as perfect as it could be. She was a perfectionist after all. It is her caring about all aspects of her performance that made Dusty, Dusty!! Great job..

      Yes, I think most "genuises" were perfectionists. I watched the bio video on YT and learned a lot (the longer one). She could be taxing trying to get everything perfect, but most agree it worked out well ! Always hardest on herself. Gone too soon. I hope to pick up a good biographical book on her.

    Dusty was awesome. She was successful in both the UK & USA. Dusty championed the Motown Sound in the UK recording many Motown songs and she presented a TV special edition of Ready Steady Go in 1965 that featured the Temptations, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, Smokey Robinson & The Supremes. Sadly her career tanked at the end of the 60s due to drug abuse and backlash after she was outed as being gay. Very different times! Elton John wrote "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" to record with Dusty as a duet but that fell through... The Pet Shop Boys would eventually provide the material and support for her comeback in 1986. Dusty is a massive gay icon. She died aged 59.

    Such an emotive voice, she just had the vocals and the style. Her fave writers were Burt Bacharach, Carole King, Carly SImon, etc. She adored Motown and brought some acts over from America to be on her show, something Brits had not seen, but soon embraced. She also refused to sing to a segregated audience in S. Africa, and was booted out of the country - probably the first artists to stand ground on that and lose money for it. SO many hits, and all showcase that incredible, God given talent (her belief). She was ahead of the times, probably would have done more blues, etc if she'd hit later. But, she is superb in any case. Sorry for long post, but I was a fan from 1967, in high school ! Thanks, your'e opinion is especially important and worth while.

  • @timsmith1278
    @timsmith1278 5 років тому +3

    Well before my time, but clearly a great voice, as demonstrated here.... I remember her doing NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVED (along with those other PSB collaborations), and have been trying to find a live vocal of it, but all the ones I come across, tend to be those mimed versions like from Top of the Pops appearances - anyway, a great song - very dreamy and sombre, and therefore sang in such a hushed tone.
    As for looking at a male voice (or voices) sometime, I recommend the rock band, THUNDER - not a heavy metal band at all, but more bluesy rock, in the vein of: 'Free', 'Bad Company, 'Deep Purple' and dare I say, the Rolling Stones' (but much better!). Performing 'WONDER DAYS at The 100 Club in 2016 and A BETTER MAN, Live in London -1997, are two contrasting songs that I feel are interesting examples, obviously with emphasis on singer, Danny Bowes.

    • @jeframp3805
      @jeframp3805 4 роки тому +1

      There is one almost "live" vocal of "nothing has been proved", which is Live at the BAFTA awards 1989. It is mimed, but to a raw and recorded version she had done earlier that day especially for the show and it sounds incredibly good and has a very "live sound".

    I must add that many vocal coach reactors fail to score singers on their stage presence like their body movements and hand gestures. Notice the line "Takes my breath away" and how she uses her hands to express that "take away" line visually. Here Dusty has these smooth hand gestures to give a visual effect to the lyrics, rather than stand still. The movements suggest the meaning of the lyrics in spots, key word here is "suggest" not "take away" from or interfere with the vocal performance. This shows Dusty was a complete pro onstage. The opposite of this is some reactors who are NOT vocal coaches, the body movements are the first thing that comes out of their mouth, rather than the voice. Why? Because they have been weened on "Music Videos" for decades...they are used to "seeing a song" first rather than hearing it. the expect a dance/dancers on every tune and fast cut edits for the sensationalism they have been sold on, turning music into physical sport competition. Another one that kills me is "oh, darn, it's black and white," not realizing that there was a time color TV programs were rare....Color TV was not affordable to all and most shows were done in black and white because practically no one had Color TV sets. Dusty was a favorite singer as I grew up as a kid in the 60's, you just KNEW it was her on the radio without being told.

    Oh, Dusty how you are still missed. A real class act - lots of these young singers who insist on prancing about the stage, surrounded by dancers and distractions, should watch this and take notes. Stand at the mic and SING. If you've got a voice like Dusty, you don't need all the lights, the smoke & mirrors, the outfit changes, the shirtless dancers. Let your voice tell the story. Sadly, there's not a lot of that these days.

    I really enjoy watching your videos. I love your facial expressions when someone isn't singing very well. I've loved Dusty's unique sound for a very long time! Thanks for this video. At the beginning of this video you mentioned a video in which you reacted to Donna Summer. I really enjoyed that video as well. It was just recently brought to my attention by a friend of mine that when she first started out, Donna was with the Vienna Folk Opera Company! Who knew? He sent me two links which I'm sharing with you. One is the article about her time there, the other is a link to a live performance in 1979. It's in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the concert that you can hear why the director recruited her to be part of the opera company. Unfortunately, she did not enjoy the experience. Here are the links: www.wqxr.org/story/210118-disco-queen-donna-summer-sang-vienna-opera/ and of the concert: ua-cam.com/video/zAuTw8AzTuY/v-deo.html

    I was told that recording her was a nightmare. She was such a perfectionist that virtually every word she sang was punched (recorded separately on another track, then cut into the mix later, replacing the original word). And of course not a trace of autotuning needed (or available).

    Off course she's a legend!! Just a thought, I've searched for a vocal coach reaction to a Lady who is a special legend, but to no avail?! So this could be your opportunity to buck the trend....oh, by the way, she's British just like Dusty! Who am I talking about? None other than the amazing Shirley Bassey!! Shirley is now in her 80's and can still belt them out....a true legend!!!

    A question Honest Vocal Coach. Dusty had an amazing vocal technique, Do you think she developed that herself or did she have coaching?

    Dusty is one of my favourite singers of all time! If you get a chance, please react to Susanne Sundfør- she’s a really underrated Norwegian synth pop artist who is often compared to Kate Bush. I think you’ll really like her, and this performance in particular: ua-cam.com/video/S1kdI0IygAE/v-deo.html x
