Can you do a more in depth review of the second edition of the Greek and Hebrew Reader's by Zondervan? I'm curious what they've fixed from the first edition. I'm mainly curious about the Hebrew lexicon. It's layout was terrible in the first edition, going left to right on the page, but with a right to left page order. This inconsistency somewhat ruined it for me, along with the cheap flimsy cover. Glad to see they've replaced it with cloth over board.

Hi there! I’m just getting ready to start learning Hebrew, and I’m checking out resources, including readers editions. For Greek I have the Tyndale Greek NT readers edition published by crossway as a physical copy, and I have the NA28 on accordance. I noticed that crossway is coming out with a readers edition of the Hebrew Old Testament that looks to be along the same lines as the Greek New Testament that I referenced above, and it comes out in October. Obviously it’s not out yet, but I was wondering if you knew anything about it or whether or not you would expect it to be a reliable resource based upon text critical issues. Basically, I’m wondering if I should get the new one to match my Greek NT, or if I should get the BHS. For the record, I am planning on getting the BHS on accordance anyway. Thanks in advance!

I don't understand how a text closely based on BHS (and therefore closely based on the Leningrad Codex) can call itself a reader's edition. The reader/student will see all sorts of peculiarities of L and be confused. The reader will even run across a few peculiarities of BHS that are not present in L! Perhaps if you don't care about accents, which few Christians do, then the number of peculiarities is acceptable. For many Jewish uses, we certainly DO care about accents, and perhaps accordingly, the equivalent of a reader's edition oriented towards Jewish use is NEVER based closely on BHS.
It is almost as if by "Masoretic text," Jews and Christians mean different things, by and large. Jews, by and large, mean some kind of consensus that certainly relies heavily on L but takes other manuscripts (and even the printed tradition) into account. Christians, by and large, seem to mean only L, and even within L, only BHS! Dotan's BHL seems to be almost unknown among Christians. Thanks so much to Hendrickson for bringing BHL to light, but they were (and are) fighting an uphill battle against BHS!
